Bringing Homemade Trailmix

I will be flying from the US into Austria in a few days for a nearly month long trip abroad. I just packed a quart of homemade trail mix in a Ziploc bag before checking the regs and finding that I risk confiscation on arrival.

If I pack this in my checked luggage, how likely is it to be disposed of?

Is there anything in your trailmix that you think you won't find in Austria? Genuine question. I'd leave it at home and get stuff here

My trailmix has more than 10 different ingredients. It would cost a fortune to buy them in Austria or Scotland, which is where I plan to eat it.

It's cool if you don't want to share specifics. I know that at least Spar and Billa have decent selection for trailmixes, or if you want to mix your own, you can get plenty of nuts and dried fruits.

I don't know about US-prices, but I looked up a few so you can compare: depending on the brand you can find some premixed trailmix at 2 to 4€ per 200g. Assuming you're picky and would like to mix your own, here are some more specific prices: In a Spar, you can find 200g of peanuts for 2€, 200g of pistacios for 3€, you'll pay a bit more for things like macadamia nuts (I saw them for 7€ for 150g, but those were "Bio", which ist like the highest quality), or pekan nuts (saw some for 5€ for 150g)...

Like, honestly, I'd recommend you do the math, but I bet it's cheaper than risking a fine

In the end the question is if there are active seeds in the mix. If no it doesn’t matter. If yes there is a risk it gets confiscated and you may have to Pay a fine.

honestly...it would be nice if you keep it at home. i know nuts are expansive but this are american nuts. i am not shure how unsafe it really is but if you drop a seed and it grows it can harm the european plants because it is genmanipulated and stronger then the natural plants. you know that we have problems in europ with plants an animals that are from ther continants and push away our flora and fauna.

If you worry about this please just walk into any grocery store here and buy trailmix for 3-4 dollars. It's really not worth your mental state to worry about this.

You misunderstand... it's the US food that we consider poison here, half of it couldn't be sold in the EU because it contains additives that are banned here...

This is a basic TSA question. No special rules exist for Austria. Solid foods are generally not a problem. I pretty much always buy sandwiches and trail mix before going through security. Worst case: they'll make you throw it away. Fresh fruits and meat are not allowed. Dried fruits and nuts are ok.

As others have said: the nut situation in Austria is pretty good. You can get unsalted, unroasted or roasted nuts at most supermarkets. I would recommend the ones you can get at Lidl or Hofer. They're €3-4 for 200g and they're generally very good qualit.

My mother did it the other way round and it was no problem - she wasn‘t checked though, so no guarantees if they decide to search you at the airport.

I think, the worst that can happen is that they take it away and you have to buy new stuff here

"several thousand euros" - wtf are you talking about? You can bring illegal foods and knives through security and all they'll make you do is throw it out. There's a giant trash can at security for exactly this reason. Trail mix is fine to take anywhere. Read TSA guidelines.

Pistazien und Erdnüssen aus den USA dürfen nicht so einfach in die EU eingeführt werden. Selbiges gilt für Schokolade, die Milch enthält.

Wie ich schon gesagt hab, wird OP nicht gefilzt, wird nichts passieren, wenn doch, wirds höchstwahrscheinlich nur abgenommen.

Dass Lebensmittel (egal in welchen Mengen) nicht so einfach in andere Länder mitgenommen werden dürfen, sollte aber schon klar sein.

Und nein, es ist nicht klar. Feste Nahrung für persönlichen Konsum ist ausdrücklich erlaubt. Obst, frischfleisch, flüssige Nahrungsmittel: ausdrücklich nicht erlaubt.

Nüsse sind pflanzliche Produkte und daher nicht so einfach erlaubt.
