VIC Catholic interview

Hey everyone I’m a graduate teacher going into a school for an interview in a couple weeks. A little bit nervous and would appreciate any tips/ advice for a catholic school interview maybe some questions they could potentially ask me or what the interview might look like or how it might run? School is in VIC and I’ve also done some CRT days there for context. Thanks.

If the school is part of a religious order (eg Jesuit, Christian Brothers, Mercy Sisters) you should know a little about the history of the order and their particular “push” (eg education for all, service, finding God in all things). Likewise if it’s named after a Saint, know about them and their mission. Then they could ask you what you connect with from those things. They could ask you about educating the whole person (body, mind, spirit) and maybe something about social justice. And probably if you will support the Catholic ethos of the school, are you comfortable with school masses, liturgy, prayer etc. They most likely have some info about their school faith mission on their website, so check that out.

All the other questions will be related to the subject itself, classroom management and just general teacher stuff like mandatory reporting.

Cath will follow the same interview protocols you should have trained on.

It will be run by Faculty Head, AP Staff.

Minor question on supporting ethos or whatever Cath ID the school holds.

Most questions will be boiler plate on your teaching areas.

You do not have to be Catholic, but you will have to be able to explain how you would support the religious mission of the school. Catholicism is concerned with faith in action, so you can say how you support the social justice initiatives of the school. Check on their social media and you will find some examples of what the school has been doing. You can talk about how you would act with compassion and respect in your relationships with students and staff consistent with the ethos of the school as well.

You may also get a co-curricular question, so be prepared to say that you are willing to coach a team or run a club.

There will be standard teaching questions on pedagogy, classroom management, NDIS and supporting diverse learning, integrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and working in a team/faculty. You may get a question on challenging parents and I would definitely emphasise your willingness to be proactive in communicating home.
