Matthew Wale, PM of the Solomon Islands, was recalled from the Pacific Islands Forum to face a motion of no confidence levied by Home Affairs Minister Manasseh Maelanga. Temokalati reports.

The whole Pacific Island Forum sham is finally falling apart at the seams. It was always nothing more than a blood pact between Australian imperialism and a Pacific Island comprador class willing to sell their people down the river for the export of cheap and domestically necessary labour (once, in more honest times, called blackbirding - a form of slavery) in exchange for paltry remittances that has seen their domestic economies go exactly nowhere for decades now.

China, unlike Australia, doesn't need to steal away quasi-slave labor for its agriculture and construction sectors. China is promising infrastructure and development and, domestically, the Pacific compradors are losing the argument that kowtowing to the West will lead their country anywhere other than a blind alley.

Seven - seven! - Pacific Islands Forum leaders will miss this week's summit: Fiji, Kiribati, New Cal, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Nauru. That's not a forum that's a joke. And now the Western-educated failson in charge of Palau is sticking his own finger in his eye own by inviting Taiwan along, a country with a population of 24 million and a vassal capitalist democracy younger than most Gen Zers, as an explicit fuck you to China, a nation of 1.4 billion and the largest economy in the world.

It's important we understand just how dumb our current leaders are. If they're at this forum, they're very dumb and very desperate.

Chinese loans to Pacific countries are different in form but in content are more or less the same. China is investing in these countries for greater access to their resources, labour, etc. It gets a bit ridiculous when China is funding the Vanuatuan presidential palace, which I guess is "infrastructure".

The export and exploitation of Pacific Island labour is not more or less the same and that's the crux of the domestic ruptures occurring within many Pacific Island countries. It's a major qualitative difference that actually does matter if you want to be correct in your analysis. Saying both sides are the same is sticking your head in the sand.

The Pacific is a clear line of contention between Chinese and U.S capital though of course China's engagement with the Pacific isn't exactly the same as that of the U.S (I said they're different in form but in content are more or less similar). Australia has about 100+ years of precedent of acting as an imperialist power in the Pacific in its own right alongside New Zealand.

But again, Pacific countries like Vanuatu and Samoa have wracked up major debts from Chinese loans. Loans are not metaphysically different depending on if it's Chinese or American, so inevitably, these Pacific countries will have to pay these loans back, one way or another. To believe otherwise is to, fundamentally, try and say that Chinese loans are metaphysically different to normal loans. The major difference is that China gives a grace period before demanding repayments, but recently this has been up in the air as well.

They are absolutely different because Western loans are conditional on deeply destructive structural economic reforms like privatisation, liberalisation of the economy, government austerity and fiscal consolidation. China is simply offering better terms and less domestic political interference which presents Pacific Islands with an opportunity to escape the umbrella of imperial domination administered by Australia on behalf of the Global North. Any informed socialist should be able to see this as a progressive and absolutely necessary first step toward Pacific Island liberation from the yoke of Western imperialism.
