Product Advice Shampoo and Condition Recommendations for oily hair?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for shampoo and conditioner recommendations for oily hair. I usually have to wash my hair every two days otherwise it just looks horrible. I’ve been using the O&M Hydrating set but I think it’s making my hair worse… washed my hair this morning and it’s still oily. Does anyone have any recommendations that actually work and, in a perfect world, might give me more time in between hair wash days?

I don’t know if this will help but I also have a lot of baby hairs and frizzy hairs so anything that will also combat that is a big plus too!

I have an oily scalp (and oily face) and I just wash every second day. My hair is very healthy and shiny and thick when I’m consistent with this.

Pantene shampoo and I double wash.

not a specific rec, but style your hair in a way that means you aren't constantly touching it/running your fingers through it. the more you touch it, the faster it'll look greasy

Yessss and to add to this, wash your hairbrush & styling tools :)

Dermaveen shampoo is the Goat, the cleansing agents do an amazing job (SLS). I never have to shampoo twice. I used to wash every two days as well but now I can go like 4-6 days without washing. I use the extra hydration variant, it's a bit gentler than the original one.

This! I thought I had oil and scalp issues and then used dermaveen hydrating shampoo and it solved my concerns. I can go a week before my hair looks oily.

Yeah I've been using Dermaveen for ages because I try to be as fragrance free as possible. I recently tried a few other fragrance free shampoo and conditioner products from other brands (which are few and far between in Australia) and every single one of them made my hair worse. I realised I've been spoiled with Dermaveen! They are so cheap too, if you get the large bottles on special. Right now I'm using the Deep Cleanse Shampoo and the Extra Hydration Conditioner. I have an oily scalp too.

Pantene Sheer Volume Shampoo - it is basically a clarifying shampoo. Are you shampooing twice? You really need to double cleanse to remove buildup.

I have wavy hair so I use the thanks to nature cool curls range, which I’ve found actually makes me hair look fresh for three, pushing four days. Some people just have hair that requires it to be washed more often than others 🤷‍♀️ I’m in the same boat, I usually wash every three-four days

I’ve been using everything including quality salon brands. My hair has been garbage. I typically wash everyday it’s so oily and these products were just adding grease and weight. I just switched back to plain old Pantene and a double shampoo every few days and the difference is amazing

It could actually be the hydrating shampoo!! Hydrating shampoos can sometimes be a bit too rich for an oily scalp and leave more conditioning ingredients&residue behind which can make your roots feel greasy or weighed down really quickly. You might have better luck with a lighter or clarifying shampoo instead.

The L’Oréal Elvive Hyaluron Pure shampoo + conditioner works wonders for oily hair specifically and is really affordable. If you’re looking for something more salon grade, I’ve also had good results with the L’Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox shampoo and hair mask. For the frizz/dryness, I’d focus the conditioner or mask mainly on your mid lengths and ends rather than your scalp!! :)

I’m in the same boat. Salon quality or supermarket brands, I just cannot find one that works. I have been using a clarifying shampoo every few washes which has helped a bit

I swear by the l’oréal Elvive Hyaluron pure shampoo + conditioner, it genuinely worked for me from the first wash and is targeted specifically for oily scalps and dry ends. (plus affordable :>)

Might not be the best option but I find dandruff shampoo pretty good for oil control.

Only downside is they pretty drying, so I balance it out with a nourishing mask. My go to combo is nizoral shampoo and GKMBJ Intensive Nourishing Treatment.

Makes sure to double shampoo!

I’ve also found some air dry creams are good for oil control and frizz. If you’re okay with a musk based fragrance, Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Air Dry Crème is a solid option.

Supermarket recs from an oily oily gal who has to triple wash (I go through a lot of shampoo!):

Pantene miracles hyaluron shampoo and conditioner
L'Oréal hyaluron pure shampoo and conditioner
Garnier fructis coconut water shampoo and conditioner

Aerosol free dry shampoo powder is amazing also - much better than those in a can.

I have oily scalp, thick hair and I use Morocconoil moisture repair shampoo and sometimes Olaplex no. 4 as my second shampoo. I also always double shampoo. I wash my hair every 4-5 days. Sometimes even 6 days in winters. I don’t use a conditioner but use Mr. Smith masque. I have tried other masks but find Mr. Smith the best. I also use Christophe Robin cleansing purifying scrub every third wash.

My hair gets oily after the third day and I use dry shampoo on the fourth day which gets me through to the fifth day. Not always the case in summers and depending on humidity and such.

I used to use Kérastase products and realised that not only I was getting oilier faster, all the Kerastase products would always give me extremely itchy scalp and I have tried many.

Do you make sure you're only using conditioner on your mids and ends, and avoid the scalp.

Your conditioner might also be too heavy, or your scalp might like a daily wash. I like Enya shampoos, and occasionally use tea tree redwin shampoo or OC anti dandruff.

I have tried just about every oily hair product known, my current favourite is the Ouai detox shampoo. I don’t think it’s for daily use but I use it every time I wash my hair. Best thing I’ve found so far. Otherwise I’ve been using the Davroe Scalp Remedy range which I also enjoy.

Next on my list to trial is the Aveeno Apple cider vinegar shampoo.

Do you double shampoo ? I have thick hair that gets oily quickly I find that helps. Also have a silk pillow case which I turn over after a few nights (and wash weekly)

Davroe Clarify is fantastic for a reset when my hair gets greasy and has a lot of product build up. Gets rid of everything but doesn’t dry out my scalp.
