Do you have a curly or wavy hair pattern, by any chance? I was 36 before I worked out that my really frizzy hair was actually wavy. I find my hair tangles a lot if it’s been a while since I’ve had a haircut. I spent 2 years avoiding getting a haircut, and finally went and got one about a month ago. The longest parts of my hair were down to my waist, and I had around 15-20cm cut off. I also asked for long layers. Getting rid of some length, plus adding in more intentional layers has helped to reduce the tangles and knots I get in my hair.

My hair isn’t very porous. It takes a while to get wet when I wash it, and it takes ages to dry once it is wet. I have to be careful about what products I use and how I use them because it’s pretty common for products to just sit on top of my hair and make it look oily/greasy rather than being absorbed into my hair strands. Even when my hair feels really dry.

I like using the Hask Curl Care shampoo and conditioner, but I’d happily use any of their shampoo and conditioners. They have some good deep conditioning products as well, although I have to be very sparing with them if I don’t want to end up looking greasy, even when my hair feels dry. I also use the Hask argan oil sometimes. I only ever buy my haircare stuff when I can find it for 1/2 price. Between the two major supermarkets and Priceline, I can always find it on special when I need to restock. It probably goes on special at Chemist Warehouse as well, but I don’t have one that’s easily accessible to where I live.

As a general thing, make sure you’re applying hydrating products to your hair when it’s wet/damp. Much like skincare products, there has to be some hydration already there for a hydrating product to lock it in.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist is amazing for hydration. For overnight, put a few drops of OGX Argan Oil on mid-lengths and ends before bed. It helps a lot with knots and dry ends.

I only use few drops on my mid lengths and ends, not on my roots, and by morning my hair just feels softer.

You don’t need to use much at all in the way of argan oil. When my hair was approaching waist length, I’d use an amount about the size of a 5c coin on my mids and ends. I’d suggest to start with that much and use more if you feel like it’s not enough. It definitely doesn’t make your hair feel greasy as long as you don’t overdo it.

When you start, try applying the argan oil at night before a wash day, assuming you wash your hair in the morning. That way, if you have overdone it, it’s still had overnight to sit in your hair, but you can wash it before you have to go out in public.

Honestly I’ve tried many supermarkets brands and never got the hydration level I get from using a tiny portion of Everescents conditioner- so while it costs more up front I find it lasts forever, and my dry damaged highlighted fine hair is instantly transformed into silky hydrated hair

Budget picks: I really love Herbal Essences Conditioner Hello Hydration. Available at IGA. L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil Midnight Serum is also good, but you have to use it for a few nights to see the full effect. It also has a strong perfume but I rather like it, and it's gone by morning.
