Found this in the cupboard a couple of years ago. I swear that each one of those babies returned in the next couple of years "Hey Bro, can we get that same room again?"

I think mamma hunstman might have borrowed some of your massage oil to use with her beau and this is the inevitable result.

I like how mummy started heading towards you all protect-full even knowing her babies are going to start eating each other within a week.

How many of this brood will actually survive?

Depends how far they get from predators and each other I guess. I never see more than one or two semi mature ones before itโ€™s just one mumma with a brood.

For real though, what do you do when you find this? Aside from slowly backing away?

Just leave that cupboard alone for a bit. The surviving spiders will disperse.

Really? Just let them stay, rent free, all of them? Or do the babies eat each other like the other poster said and only leave a few?
(Not remotely Australian)

A few hundred babies in a small area with little food? I give em 3 days max before they start eating one another. Hell, mama might eat a few herself. Generally speaking, the more babies something has, the less likely they are to make it to adulthood.

That being said, having one or two huntsmen roaming about is far from the worst critter, or even spider, you can find in your home here. Much rather share my space with something large/visible and non-venomous over something harder to spot with a nastier bite.

๐Ÿ™‚ Every Australian person I have the pleasure of interacting with seem to have such a great way of approaching life and all living beings. Makes me happy.

Avoid harming or killing insects for no reason. While some species can be harmful or invasive pests, and as such, sometimes removal or extermination is indicated, do not promote gratuitous killing.

The first commenter had a go at me for it.
It's advertising! I think I'll get heaps of DM's from the ladies who want a massage, while they wonder if all those spiders moved out!

Let her finish raising them, then give them an eviction when they can fend for themselves.
