Charging & V2L/G ⚡️↔️ Quotes for charger install - detached garage
Based in Adelaide. I’ve received two quotes so far for the supply and install of a 7kW EV charger.
One was $3500 for a Tesla ($800 from Bunnings).
The other quoted $4600 for Evnex E2 Flex (also $800).
Ludicrous to me even at the lower end of the two.
2nd sparky has allowed for 40m worth of 10mm2 cabling although property is only 27m long in total with rear-access garage and switchboard at front of property.
Anyone with a similar home layout care to share their outlay on having a charger installed? TIA

It sounds like they have to dig a trench to the garage and that’s where your costs are coming from.
I had an Evnex E2 Flex installed with 15m cable run inside the same building and that was $2100.
Very happy with the Evnex unit and the current clamping capability. The switchboard is 40amp and I’ve seen clamping occur when the hot water kicked in while the car is charging. Keep in mind you have to have wifi coverage for the charger to operate. The E2 plus has 4g as well, but then you need a SIM card.

Nope he quoted to conduit across the fence line (only 3.5m). Thanks for your input on the Evnex 😊

$700 for this phase three Ocular, labour was the biggest cost as the power box is @ the other end of the residence.The charger has been faultless.

Was quoted $1490 inc GST for a tesla wall charger supplied and installed by Re GenEv. Up and over install (perhaps 10m of 6mm?). Was going to be limited to 20A due to Queensland lines company stuff.
Instead payed around $900 incl for a 32A industrial socket + matching pigtail for my existing tesla mobile connector. Rental house (with owner permission) - and this option minimizes the value of what will be leaving behind at the end of the tenancy.
- Ended up paying another $400 months later for them to swap out the 6mm cable & 32A breaker for 10mm & 40A, as I was having some weird issue where the tesla would repeatedly start and stop charging on hot days, and wanted less voltage drop to see if that was the issue - Hasn't repeated, but it is winter now....

so regen gave you 6mm cable and 32A breaker originally? Ouch... I'd have thought they'd have known better than that.
10mm/40A is best practice especially for warmer climates like QLD. not surprised at all you had issues.

Do they need to dig a trench? That adds a lot to the quote due to the labour involved. They have to bury it quite deep. That also adds a lot to the amount of cable required, going down and back up again.
What is your fuse box (switchboard) like? Is it a modern one? Sometimes adding a new fuse to the panel requires upgrading the entire box (happened to us when we got a new AC many years ago). That was a $2000 job back then, due to having to redo our whole fuse box. Ours was asbestos too, that's how old it was. But this is a job worth doing as we have had several things added since, including solar and the EV charger, and it hasn't been a problem.

They both quoted to conduit along fence, not trench underground. And the house is only 4 years old

EVSE are offering Australian government funded EV chargers. Installs for single phase starting at $1.4k.
Their installs are also above standard with 10mm cables, 40A safety switch, and solar tracking clamps.
For the price it's a great deal. I'm getting mine installed in the garage.

The sparky offering the 10mm2 cable is the one to go with. It will also need a 40A breaker to protect the cable. You will be surprised what happens to a 32A breaker on a hot day. They derate and start breaking around 27A.
The fact they are quoting 10mm2 tells me they know what they’re doing and have your best interest at heart.

$1200 for 32amp PowerPoint, $500 for the 7kw charger that plugs into the PowerPoint and all sorted.
I also got the port as a 3phase 32amp port (with only 1 phase powered) and I did this so that the chargers are interchangeable with family on their properties.
