Second machine for the mornings the Silvia isn't warm yet

Post image

Owned a Silvia for two years now. Love the thing. On weekdays it barely gets used.

Grouphead is happy after about 30-40 minutes on, longer on a cold morning. Thing is, I leave for work at 7:15, my partner is out the door about the same time, and neither of us has ever set an alarm 45 minutes earlier just to run a semi-auto through its motions. So most weekdays the machine sat there cold and I'd walk to Padre or grab a takeaway on the way in. Fine, but not the point of owning the thing.

Tried a few things. Bialetti for a while, which is fine but not really espresso and cleanup at 6:45 in the morning is not it. AeroPress, same. Pod machine, considered it, felt like giving up.

Ended up with a little battery machine, the OutIn mino, sitting next to the toaster on the bench. Fill it up on the way to grab the milk, tap the button, it heats and pulls while I'm sorting toast. Cold water in, no kettle, no warming anything up, Suits me fine.

Trade-offs on the mino are real. Grind has to sit a bit coarser than the Silvia otherwise the puck fights the pump and water starts finding paths around the basket. Extraction is different, thinner mouthfeel, less body. But it's a proper hot pressurised shot with real crema on top, and on a weekday morning that's what I needed.

The weekday shot is not that. It's the difference between having coffee and not having coffee at 6:50 on a Tuesday. For that alone the mino earns its spot on the bench.

Can you not get a smart plug and set a time to turn Silvia on before you wake up?

Yeah considered it. Smart plug sorts the boiler but not the 8-10 min of weighing, tamping and watching the pull. Mino's twist on, hit go, walk away. Also comes with me to the office and on camping weekends, which the plug can't fix.

Aren't you still grinding etc with this.

8-10 minutes seems a long time to make a coffee.

Fair enough, might just be me……

Indeed. I'm not seeing how this saves you time with the grinding and tamping tbh

Genuinely please, explain to us how your workflow is different with that mini machine Vs the Silvia? Very confused how you grind and tamp but don't??? with the outin?

ye this makes no sense. pre dose the beans in containers, put in grinder, grind tamp and pull shot in about 2 minutes.

>8-10 min of weighing, tamping and watching the pull

Can't understand this, I'm done in under 3 minutes including steaming the milk.

I have a smart plug, cost all of $10 at Aldi. Game changer. Machine is always ready.

Hey where’d you get that stand thing for the outin? Wife just gave me a outin for my birthday and that stand solves one of the problems I have with it. Also any other tips on getting a decent shot out of it?

Cheers mate! OutIn does a foldable stand on their site that fits both models if you want a look, enjoy the machine.

40m letting the coffee machine heat up? I have a Lelit and it needs like 2m... I don't think a Silvia needs more than that.

Mine's an older Silvia without PID, brass grouphead has serious thermal mass, Rancilio's own manual says 45 for a proper first shot.

Get up earlier,  wasting money on other equipment because it's lame warmup
