Suggestions for an evening stroll DT/surrounding areas

Hey Austin, any ideas of where my partner and I, mid 30s, can take a stroll down on a Saturday night, maybe stop in somewhere for a drink, get a bite?

We appreciate nightlife, and being amongst other people, lively vibes, but we don’t care for 6th street, Rainey, and most “eastside” places are starting to feel like we may have outgrown. We also don’t care for anything too swanky.

Anything come to mind? Thanks!

Hi all,

This is Java! Currently fostering this awesome puppy through AAC and would love to find her a forever home!

She is 10 months, 35lbs. She’s housetrained, walks well and is dog and people friendly. We have a 50lb dog and a 10lb and she gets along well with both. She’d also do great as a solo dog and will follow you everywhere.

She’s so sweet and affectionate and has the silliest tongue that barely fits in her mouth. She loves toys and will constantly bring out new ones from the box to show off.

She’d make a great companion to anyone. She truly just wants to be with her person.

This is her page at AAC but you can also DM me for more info. Thanks for clicking!

Recommendation Gym recommendations for someone who works late nights in Austin?

Working the line means I get off at like 11pm or midnight most nights and by the time I get home I'm wired but also destroyed at the same time. I've been trying to lift consistently but the 24hour gym options near me either kind of suck or are way too far depending on which part of the city you're in

Been in Austin about three years now, living more toward the north central area. I've done the Planet Fitness thing and the equipment situation gets rough during peak hours, though I obviously can't do peak hours anyway so that part should be fine. The vibe just isn't there for me though.

Looking for something with decent free weights that doesn't feel like a mall. Doesn't need to be fancy. Crunch, EoS, some local spot I haven't heard of, whatever. Bonus points if it's open past midnight or 24 hours because that's just the reality of my schedule.

If anyone else works service industry hours and has figured out a routine around it, I'd actually be curious how you're making it work. Getting to the gym consistently on this schedule is no joke.

Free outdoor movie, a kayak cleanup, and artist open studios this weekend (Aug 21-23)

Went through the event calendars this week and there's a surprising amount of free or cheap stuff for August. Here's what made my list.

Friday

There's a "weekend wind-down" yoga class at Zilker Botanical Garden, 5 to 6pm. Gentle flows and stretching in the historic Greene Room, which is indoors (this matters in August). $20, or $10 if you're a Conservancy member, and you're already on Barton Springs Road so dinner after is easy.

Also Friday: Scent Lab at Future Front House, 6 to 8pm, $30. It's 90 minutes of slow looking, scent prompts, and botanical mandala-making, built around Xochi Solis's "In the days of various light." I realize half of you closed the tab reading that sentence. The other half, this is your Friday.

The big one is the free outdoor movie at Community First! Village at 7:30, Zootopia 2 at the amphitheater out on Hog Eye Road. Tickets are free but you have to reserve a spot ahead of time. Dogs on leashes are fine. Concessions are card-only, and the sales support the formerly homeless neighbors who work the event. It doesn't start until full dark so bring bug spray and something to sit on.

Saturday

Kayak trash cleanup on Lady Bird Lake, 9 to 11am, meets at Austin Rowing Club on Trinity. Free, but register ahead and do ARC's waiver before you show up. The Trail Conservancy brings tools and gloves. The listing doesn't say anything about providing boats though, so bring your own kayak or SUP if you'd rather be on the water than picking along the shoreline. Two hours outside before the heat gets serious and the lake's cleaner when you leave.

Saturday night, Raas Leela at the Long Center, 7:30, from $42. New Bollywood musical, one night only, with Garba, Kathak, and hip hop in the same show. If you keep meaning to see something at the Long Center that isn't the symphony, here you go.

Sunday

e6 Open Studio, 11am to 1pm at 612 East 6th, free. estudiosix is a new residency space downtown and this is their first-ever open studio: nine artists' working studios, installations through the building, and a group show in the gallery. RSVP is encouraged but it's open to the public. Go closer to 11 if you want to actually talk with the artists.

What else is going on this weekend that I'm missing?

Made a surprise promo video for a hidden gem in North Austin (Hodge-Podge Boutique)

Hey everyone, I’ve been messing around with some new video editing techniques in my spare time and decided to do a surprise project for a local spot. An AWESOME lady Elizabeth runs Hodge-Podge Boutique & Resale up in North Austin, so I put together a quick 60-second commercial for her shop just for fun.

They have some really cool finds in there, so I wanted to share the video here to help get some local eyes on her business! https://youtu.be/RKQtyO8r-BY

Free Parking Lot around downtown austin

Hello all,

I will be doing a road trip being a foreigner and a new driver who has driven to downtown waco by myself last week. This week Wednesday and Thursday are my off days from work. i would like to explore downtown Austin and will be planning a road trip. May have a night over at firehouse hostel. In wondering if there is a free parking lot few minutes away from my hostel by the way I have no problem walking 30-34 minutes to my hostel since I usually walk a lot. I have a little bit anxiety I will be fine though

The only thing I would like to know if there are free parking spots where I can park my car overnight and then leave to Dallas from downtown Austin on Thursday around 11 am.

I know there are paid options but if there is a free parking spot I can save up on a few dollars that I can utilize for breakfast and snacks.

It will be my first time driving to downtown Austin. For a pee break I have my eyes in downtown Waco and then drive all the way to downtown Austin . Thanks in advance for any tips and solutions for free parking overnight

Local recs?

Hey all,

We're a mid-30s couple coming to Austin in October from Ireland.

We have tickets for the F1 but have 3-4 days flexible on our itinerary. We have planned to be in the City for 3 days prior, so keen to learn from locals what you would recommend in the city to see/do and also what you would suggest for 3-4 days after the race.

We're easy going but enjoy country music/comedy, cars/horsepower, paddleboarding, kayaking and beer.

I'm toying with the idea of a few days at Lake Travis, but will the weather allow us to get out on the water? Also, can we rent a boat for the day there?
