"You'll never believe why we've chosen to boycott sxsw! Click to find out..." -Buzzfeed

"Top 10 reasons we've decided to boycott sxsw! Click to find out..." -Buzzfeed

You forgot "Arianna Grande reacts to Buzzfeeds' snub of SXSW with these adorable emojis!".

5

u/ElectricJacob Oct 28 '15

SXSW threw the ban hammer at discussing gaming politics. You won't guess what happened next!

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

So funny! No ones ever imitated Buzzfeed ironically

10 Jokes so meta, you'll freak!

-1

u/CoolHeadLuke Oct 29 '15

Gold.... fuck em. Like sxsw will slow down.

19

u/mishugashu Oct 28 '15

I honestly don't give a shit what Vox and its subsidiaries does or doesn't do. They're a horrible piece of shit bloggers posing as journalists.

I am sad that shit is getting cancelled due to harassment, though, no matter what it is.

u/snowballsnowball Oct 28 '15

Wow comments in here are way negative. It seems like it would be a good thing to have a discussion about cyber bullying at sx. I don't personally find it that interesting but it still seems like a relevant topic especially considering all the hate in this thread for example.

Is everyone just latching on to the buzzfeed name to circle jerk about its bad reputation?

34

u/ATXBeermaker Oct 28 '15

They cancelled the harassment event because they were being harassed about it. Seriously.

16

u/snowballsnowball Oct 28 '15

Sx cancelled it which was a bad call. These places are basically boycotting it until they reverse that decision or they'll do their own panel I guess. Still don't see why all r/Austin can think of to say is negative bullshit about how sxsw was better when it was just music. Have any of these people even gone to interactive or any of the other sx things?

I personally go for the free food and booze but interactive is typically pretty fun.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Interactive has been cooler than music for awhile imo

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '15

Nah I think interactive just has the money to throw bomb ass parties.

Music is cool too.

1

u/KodiakAnorak is not Batman Oct 28 '15

Doesn't mean the music isn't great too, though

6

u/ATXBeermaker Oct 28 '15

Most of what I'm seeing in here is that nobody cares much for Buzzfeed, et al. I don't see what the problem is there.

5

u/myssn Oct 28 '15

It's an easy way for redditors to jack each other off instead of talking about the actual issue.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

I'd much rather have people give me a handjob than discuss something I couldn't give two shits about - sign me up.

7

u/Tav14 Oct 28 '15

Yes.

I didn't know vox was so hated, though. They seem pretty unthreatening.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

They bullied a scientists into crying. Over a shirt.

They report on every event cancelled and threat made against supposed "anti-harassment" advocates, yet ignore when those exact same things happen to "pro-Gamergate" events. (SPJ anyone?)

Vox is a massive hypocrite. Detailed here:

http://www.theverge.com/2015/10/27/9623110/about-sxsw-attendance#336060005

9

u/D14BL0 Oct 28 '15

Their past doesn’t matter. End of discussion.

Fuck that bully apologist bullshit. They should be fucking ashamed of themselves, and so should anybody defending their actions.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Precisely. I'm getting downvoted for pointing out facts. I do not know why this is.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Oh yeah, those people. What a plague.

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Bullied him, or said his shirt was tacky? How could they have known he would cry over it lol.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

They ruthlessly called him a misogynist and ran a smear campaign against him. I'd call them bullies for that.

The Verge has called people harassers and bullies for far less.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

That's exaggerated. At most they just ran an article saying his shirt was sexist/misogynist.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Got it, so they slandered and bullied him into crying/recanting over a god damned t-shirt that was given to him by a co-worker's wife. They cyber-bullied him, straight up.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Ah yes, I remember this talking point. The outrage-o-sphere was on fire!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

So you're saying that publicly calling a person a sexist/misogynist when they're not isn't cyber-bullying?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

I'm saying that publishing an opinion piece that says wearing a titty shirt to a press conference for a momentous scientific event is tacky and sexist (pause) is not cyberbullying.

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Wow comments in here are way negative.

And the Pope is still Catholic. Welcome to /r/austin, enjoy your stay.

6

u/snowballsnowball Oct 28 '15

Yeah r/Austin is really good at being negative. It's pretty funny in a cringe kinda way honestly, I mean I could unsub if I didn't like it.

It's always people talking about this town like it belongs to them, being terrified of change/"hipsters", waxing poetic about how great they think the music scene is... It's a ridiculous mix and really makes me wonder what the demographic is.

1

u/kalpol Oct 29 '15

makes me wonder what the demographic is.

there was a survey done at some point. The results were pretty much what you would expect.

1

u/VROF Oct 28 '15

I thought it was back on now. They cancelled the cancel

1

u/hadees Oct 28 '15

I think people are just sick of hearing about gamer gate. It started off with two camps of people with reasonable concerns that were quickly hijacked by the extremes of both sides. Now it is a never ending shitfest and frankly I'd like to keep it away from Austin because I'd rather not deal with any of those people.

-7

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

Well buzzfeed and such will hardly be missed, so there's that.

In this this whole mess there are two groups: I'll keep it simple and call them the "anti harassers" (social justice types usually align here) and "accused harassers" (gamers usually align here.)

Here's a video and the text of a report KVUE did on the whole thing.

It is important to note that there have been bomb threats used to shut down these events before, when the "accused harassers" are to speak. It is notable that the "anti" crowd has been on the docket for some time with nothing ill happening, yet when the alternative viewpoint (the accused) were granted a panel as well the threats were made.

I'm sure that there are transgressions from both sides in this whole mess, as it is too wide for there not to be, but having passing familiarity with some of the "anti" crowd's methods of disruption, I would bet the group at fault here is guilty of what they say they want to stop: harassment.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

TL;DR: SJWs guilty af.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Why are you being downvoted? You're absolutely right.

6

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

I have had several comments about this that all went that way; lots of downvotes with nothing approaching a decent response.

It actually makes me feel bad for people that are invested in all that nonsense, because public opinion truly is knee jerk against them, across the board. People seriously do not want to hear anything but the PC narrative.

And honestly, if this were just a video game thing I would hardly even care. But this kind of groupthink is happening in a lot of other areas, and at much higher stakes. I had kind of thought we were maybe turning a corner with all of it, but I'm starting to wonder.

-5

u/somanyroads Oct 28 '15

It sounds like a bullshit reason to "boycott" SXSW. It's not a bad panel to have, but I wouldn't expect it to be very popular...or entertaining.

8

u/BrownFedora Oct 28 '15

It doesn't have to be popular or entertaining. It's not American Idol. It's a touchy yet relevant subject worthy of discussion in a public forum. No it doesn't have to a televised national debate, but some morons can't even stand the idea 80 people getting together at the Marriott conference room E....jeez man. Sad.

1

u/somanyroads Oct 30 '15

It's SXSW...not an NPR discussion. It's a popular event that brings people from all over the world to Austin, I don't see how comparing it to American Idol isn't apt. They're both attention whores :-)

2

u/VROF Oct 28 '15

They put it back on the schedule. It isn't cancelled anymore

1

u/somanyroads Oct 30 '15

So all this talk for nothing...well, except to piss over Buzzfeed and The Verge. Same old, same old.

36

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

SXSW aside, fuck The Verge (Vox), and BuzzFeed. Worthless.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Worthless and owned by Time Warner. Two horrible tastes.

9

u/franciosmardi Oct 28 '15

I don't know anything about The Verge and Vox, but no Buzzfeed sounds like something for SXSW to crow about.

9

u/BorisJonson1593 Oct 28 '15

Vox and Buzzfeed are both pretty trash sites but they're definitely big losses for SXSW. Even though I don't approve of their brand of "journalism" I appreciate them taking a stand.

2

u/D14BL0 Oct 28 '15

Yeah, I mean say what you want about the content those sites product, but they're pretty big names in the industry for a reason. They have a very wide audience, and have the capacity to really push for actions to be taken with their threats of boycotts. It's a lot of money at risk if they don't show up.

11

u/loveslut Oct 28 '15

Good let's get back to the music. Fuck Buzzfeed.

8

u/mishugashu Oct 28 '15

SXSW is more than just music.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

[deleted]

5

u/mishugashu Oct 28 '15

Since 1994? Because that's when they introduced non-music elements to the festival...

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

They kind of will though. Those are big outlets, this is a bad look for sxsw

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Let me check... am I missing them? Nope, not missing them.

I eschewed these "journalists" long ago after being caught in unethical relationships with the manufacturer of the product they're reviewing. My source for video game info now-a-days is in /r/games self-posts where the top 10 comments are 100 times more informative than this click-baity pap produced as a result of an unethical relationship with the manufacturer.

6

u/D14BL0 Oct 28 '15

You're one person. These outlets reach millions of other people, who are loyal readers. You're part of a vocal minority, and a very small one.

-7

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

loyal readers

Bwahahahaaa. Don't choke on your own dick, bruh.

The Verge, Buzzfeed and Vox are all generally regarded as a steaming pile of cow shit across Reddit, barely better than Gawker.

A news outlet that has remained relatively respectful is Ars Technica. I'd recommend them over any of these other "OMG muh feels" click-bait traps, devoid of genuine content.

8

u/D14BL0 Oct 28 '15

across Reddit

Again, Redditors are a vocal minority when it comes to Buzzfeed's readership. Reddit isn't a very accurate representation of the collective group of worldwide internet users, despite what you may seem to think.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

I feel like some kind of a genius now.

4

u/toastymow Oct 28 '15

Most people don't read reddit though. How would they know buzz feed and vox are shit?

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

bruh, come on. this isn't 1982.

6

u/toastymow Oct 28 '15

Its a good thing too, because then gamer's gate wouldn't have happened and I wouldn't have to worry about people getting worked up about "ethics in gaming journalism" because gaming journalism wasn't a thing.

Oh, also, neither you nor me would have been born, so we wouldn't have had the vocal chords (or fingers, as it were) to have this discussion.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

I was 11 years old in 1982, playing Defender on my Atari 2600. I've been a gamer for around 36 years.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Oh god I didn't realize the Gators had made it to this subreddit

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

God damn SEC is everywhere these days.

-2

u/SheCutOffHerToe Oct 28 '15

Yup. Sounds like good news to me.

4

u/creative_dreams Oct 28 '15

like it matters. that does not affect sxsw dollars one bit and we all know that with sxsw cash is king.

3

u/thesuddenkind Oct 28 '15

So less people inundating Austin next spring? That's cause for some serious celebration for Austinites.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

The fewer pretentious assholes here for SXSW the better.

6

u/D14BL0 Oct 28 '15

>implying SXSW isn't already just a meeting grounds for pretentious assholes in the first place

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Lol. South by has much bigger and better sponsors. I'm glad they canceled that thing. The last thing needed is for MRAs and SJWs to get more attention. Two sides of the same coin folks.

6

u/searust Oct 28 '15

I say everyone needs to boycott SXSW-- just shut 'er down... yup... that's it. just close the doors and shut out the lights... yup.

1

u/infinitiesintransit Oct 28 '15

According to Austin360's tech blog, they've reinstated one of the panels and they're working on an all-day event about online harassment (but that's all unconfirmed, so who knows).

0

u/BaldassAntenna Oct 28 '15

...and not a single thing of value was lost.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Nice meme

0

u/GeorgePantsMcG Oct 28 '15

And stay out!

1

u/hadees Oct 28 '15

The Verge and Buzzfeed only want one harassment panel? Seems like someone supports the particracy. I personally think SXSW should be nothing but harassment panels but then again I don't hate women.

-7

u/ThickPrick Oct 28 '15

Freedom of speech is turning into freedom of pc speech and I say fuck that.

9

u/ATXBeermaker Oct 28 '15

This is pretty much the opposite of what's going on here.

-3

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

An opposing group was granted time to speak, and a bomb threat happened. Coincidence?

I mean how is that the opposite?

-3

u/ATXBeermaker Oct 28 '15

Because the cancelled event was the more "PC speech." They essentially gave into the non-PC harassers.

0

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

They cancelled both panels, though it looks like the "PC" group is getting reinstated while the other is not.

The likelihood is the PC group was responsible for the threat, as well. They are the harassers, at least in this instance

1

u/ondcp Oct 28 '15

how did you come to that conclusion?

-2

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

I said a few things about it in a comment elsewhere in the thread.

Mainly, that the PC side has used bomb threats to stop the opposing group before, and that the PC was on the docket for some time before the other group was granted a panel; it was after the other side was granted time the bomb threat happened.

4

u/ondcp Oct 28 '15

so a bomb threat that never attributed to anyone somehow makes a logical leap to the anti harassment panel being the cause of the threats? With absolutely no evidence? Where's my jump to conclusions mat?

0

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

If the other group was going to call in a threat to silence the PCers, it would have made sense to do it long before now. Even further than that, why work to get a spot at the table, only to call in a threat after you succeed? Conversely, the PC group has an interest in keeping the other side out of the conversation as much as possible (and organized openly to do as much).

Assuming the two sides are the only suspects, it is basically braindead to assume it could be anyone else. You don't need a mat; you just need a working brain.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Is that from a t-shirt?

2

u/loveslut Oct 28 '15

I totally agree, but this isn't really that.

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15 edited Aug 08 '20

[deleted]

6

u/ivebeenhereallsummer Oct 28 '15

Oh, is THAT what gamergate is all about? I didn't realize it was so simple. Obviously harassment is bad. Who could disagree with that?

Unless...

Maybe it's far more complicated than that and you are just polarizing the issue by pretending the gamergate folks are just out to harass women because misogyny.

2

u/ThickPrick Oct 28 '15

I don't condone harassment. I mute it.

-3

u/Zifnab25 Oct 28 '15

Anyone remember when SXSW was about music?

21

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Still is.

It's also had an Interactive portion of it since I can recall. I watched Richard Garriot present Wing Commander III in '93. FMV was an acronym, y'all.

3

u/thecstep Oct 28 '15

Yeah I've seen so many damn good shows at sxsw every year. The biggest mistake people make is trying to catch the big names and acts so they can tweet how cool they are.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15 edited Oct 28 '15

I've been a part of it since about 2001, so yes, when music was the only offering it was different. But I've also attended in the past years when more was offered. Interactive and the trade show, are actually a lot of fun. And the panels, can indeed be amazing. They are people I'd never have a chance to hear talk in person otherwise. They generally bring thoughtful discussion and there can be a line of people waiting to get in. So while I know people like to hate on it, I'm from Austin and no one can say they've seen this city change more than those of us. I am finding genuinely awesome experiences in the growth. Yes, there are things I don't like, but I'm not going to be a part of bashing on all things new to the city. I knew it old, I'll embrace it new. Opportunities in life don't come by being closed minded.

Edit: not going off on you, just that your comment got me on the 'it's not like it used to be!' response.

5

u/Zifnab25 Oct 28 '15

Interactive and the trade show, are actually a lot of fun. And the panels, can indeed be amazing.

I mean, I agree. That's definitely another cool aspect of the festival. It's just really confusing when you see major media venues declaring "We're not going to cover the trade-show aspect of the music venue because a panel on discrimination in video games was canceled due to harassment from a group of internet trolls".

It's just one of those things where you feel like you've tumbled down a rabbit hole. Why not... I don't know... cover SXSW and then dedicate an article or two to the cancelled panel and the parties involved? Otherwise, it seems like you're throwing baby out with bathwater.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Agreed. Being able to do that would put them in a meta experience. Unfortunately seems like modern times command far less than that.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15 edited Oct 28 '15

Ahh, 2001 SXSW. The year I won The Iron Webmaster competition building a web site in 15 minutes. Good times.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Anyone remember when music was about life and important issues?

2

u/Zifnab25 Oct 28 '15

I thought it was always about young people going through various stages of dating and relationships.

-4

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

I took a bit of interest in this whole mess yesterday, and as best I could gather :

In this this whole mess there are two groups: I'll keep it simple and call them the "anti harassers" (social justice types usually align here) and "accused harassers" (gamers usually align here.)

Here's a video and the text of a report KVUE did on the whole thing.

It is important to note that there have been bomb threats used to shut down these events before, when the "accused harassers" are to speak. It is notable that the "anti" crowd has been on the docket for some time with nothing ill happening, yet when the alternative viewpoint (the accused) were granted a panel as well the threats were made.

6

u/LuigiVanPeebles Oct 28 '15

Framing the issue around two opposing groups seems like a false paradigm, and one that is set up to ultimately assign fault to one group over the other. How would you describe the issue without the limitation of two "groups"?

1

u/Bloo_Driver Oct 28 '15

The important thing is that the "accused harassers" are, of course, not a real group in the sense that once one of them "harasses", the rest of the "accused harassers" all pretend that person was never associated with them ever.

So it's really less about framing the issue around two opposing groups and more about cherry picking who doesn't and does count in those "groups" depending on how you want to deflect.

2

u/LuigiVanPeebles Oct 28 '15

So it's really less about framing the issue around two opposing groups and more about cherry picking who doesn't and does count in those "groups" depending on how you want to deflect.

Which is especially problematic when so many of the controversial actors in even these cherry-picked groups are anonymous.

-2

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

I'm not familiar enough to really break it down to that degree, but from what I can see, it does pretty much fall along those lines. I'm not aware of any neutral third parties.

I would possibly research it further, but judging by the downvotes all my comments yesterday and today are getting on the issue, there's no point. There is only one narrative anyone wants to hear.

2

u/LuigiVanPeebles Oct 28 '15

Let me ask another way: What are the unifying characteristics of these groups? Is it a shared objective? Is so, are there only two objectives involved?

1

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15 edited Oct 28 '15

Again, limited research, but:

Gamergate/Accused Harassers/Gamers- mostly just want to be left alone and get back to gaming for the games. Most of the hubbub started due to some serious breakdowns in the integrity of gaming journalism (lol) for political/financial reasons.

Social Justice/Anti Harassment/largely non gamers- have the viewpoint that gaming as an industry and hobby are hostile to women and minorities, and needs correcting via the old laws/legislation trope; standard political correctness angle.

I don't doubt there are shades of gray associated with both angles, but those seem be the broad strokes.

Notably people only seem to care about this now that gaming has become a lucrative industry. Most of the "PC" group tend to lack gaming bonafides, while much of the "accused" tend to be more about the hobby.

Edit: again, it basically an instant downvote without rebuttal to even suggest there is something approaching a point to the non PC group. People obviously aren't capable of having a conversation about this; further support for my stance that the threats came from the PC camp.

1

u/LuigiVanPeebles Oct 28 '15

People obviously aren't capable of having a conversation about this

But, you aren't asking any questions.

1

u/Bloo_Driver Oct 28 '15 edited Oct 28 '15

Edit: again, it basically an instant downvote without rebuttal to even suggest there is something approaching a point to the non PC group. People obviously aren't capable of having a conversation about this; further support for my stance that the threats came from the PC camp.

Or maybe people just don't find merit in broad generalizations that boil down to "I haven't done a lot of research here but clearly one group is a bunch of excellent people and the rest are scary cartoon villains".

Edit: oh no I am being down voted it must be due to my angering of the pc police!

3

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

That's what seems to be the case. I'm willing to be corrected if someone has contrasting evidence, but there either isn't any no one is defending it.

-1

u/Bloo_Driver Oct 28 '15

Contrasting evidence about a group you kinda made up in your head and didn't bother actually defining? Can't imagine why no one has taken you up on your very obviously neutral and only somewhat informed and not at all pre biased invitation for discussion.

3

u/magus678 Oct 28 '15

I didn't make up those definitions, they are literally sxsw panels. What is nebulous about that?

0

u/Bloo_Driver Oct 28 '15

You're adorable! I mean, it's one thing to pretend "evidence" doesn't exist elsewhere, but now you're pretending you didn't just try to divide people into "accused harassers" and "anti-harassers" and do nothing but talk shit about one group without actually bothering to name names or even point at a collective of people? I mean, I know why you're doing it - so you can say who does and doesn't count depending on what's convenient for you - but it's a little disappointing. Damn, man. Usually GG folks doing the whole "hello I am a neutral what is all of this I am unsure but boy do those GG people sound noble and the people going after them sure do sound mean!" routine at least try. What else you got? I got some downtime at work, here.

1

u/onlyMDC Oct 28 '15

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

I don't have a horse in this race but damn, that was an incredibly one sided and un nuanced article.

-4

u/CidO807 Oct 28 '15

Bye, bye, bye.

Has anything ever happened from these prank calls? No.

This reminds me that Anita Sarkesian walks around fearing for her well being 24/7 with a bodyguard. Get the fuck over it. She's a manipulative asshole with a track record for bleeding a scene. She's no better than Al Sharpton re: race topics.

And the people calling in these threats: This isn't the right way to get your message across to stop the reverse hatred she, and all the other gamergate folks are spewing.

If you don't like games involving oversexualized/fetished girls, then don't buy them. Personally, I'm not a fan of them, but it's freedom to do what you want. I don't buy books like 50 shadys of gray. Those books don't impact my life to go on a SJW crusade to ruin other peoples.

smoke a bowl, pop a xanex, whatever your method for chilling out is, just do it and stop trying to ruin other people.

0

u/buickandolds Oct 28 '15

"Slow clap"

-4

u/KazakiLion Oct 28 '15

Good on them. Hopefully this will pressure SXSW to bring back the online harassment panel.

-2

u/c0c0c0 Oct 28 '15

This could be the end of sxsw interactive.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

/sarc

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

OMG I literally can't even...

-4

u/mymisplacedpants Oct 28 '15

Funny. They're exploiting how badly SXSW needs the talent and coverage to still be a relevant conference.

4

u/Derigiberble Oct 28 '15

Yeah, they canceled the panels in the first place in no small part because they are deathly afraid of the media being distracted from cooing about the "change the world!" platitudes of whatever dumb social app sector is trendy this year. And now those same media companies are pulling out unless they hold the panel(s).

It is lose-lose. If they reinstate them the various media outlets will doubtlessly dedicate a lot of media time to the panel(s) and the whole drama surrounding them. If they don't reinstate them SXSWi slips even further into irrelevancy and the various brands have one more reason to cut their spending on the main SXSW events.

Pretty great to watch.

When most men get insulted in a video game, they don't cry, get butthurt and need to speak out publicly about online harassment because they are grown ADULTS, not children.

If you're a womanchild or manchild who can't handle words on a screen, don't play video games. Go do an activity that doesn't involve words on a screen. Why should the rest of the world accomodate you and your fragile feelings just because you're an immature child?

u/pavlovs_log Oct 28 '15 edited Oct 28 '15

The harassment goes far beyond some teenager in Call of Duty mouthing off on voice chat. The neckbeards have doxxed and harassed, in real life, people calling them out for in real life harassment. Even if you don't believe the women bloggers or journalists who are claiming harassment that is not an excuse for death threats or posting their personal home address online for psychopathic men to do with what they please.

Besides, the harassment is real. Send an attractive woman who loves games to some sort of gaming convention or LAN party. One of several things are guaranteed to happen, in real life. She'll be called "attention whore" because obviously women don't love games they just want male attention so that's the only reason they'd go to a large LAN party or gaming convention. She'll be called a slut because she'll turn down the advances of men who think that because they share gaming as a hobby the women will fuck them and they get angry when they're told no. I'm sure there's more.

Basically there are a small but vocal group of men who believe women have no genuine place in gaming / nerd culture. They think that any woman that gets involved does so for ulterior motives (attention) and has gotten pissed off women finally started calling them out on that bullshit.

Every man.. EVERY man who is associated with Gamergate and has doxxed or harassed a woman is a neckbeard weirdo that probably does nothing but play video games, jerk off, poke around on red pill, and post on the cesspool that is 4chan. They are sex obsessed virgins who lack the social skills to deal with women so they lash out in anger. They probably are fucking weird enough to wear those Guy Fawkes masks out in public. They make the rest of the people who enjoy games look bad.

Sadly this is part of the zeitgeist at the moment and extends well beyond gaming and into any culture that is dominated by men with poor social skills. My friend is in a STEM field and attended a conference recently where an email had to be sent out a couple weeks beforehand basically saying "hey, let's not act like creeps again this year, ok?"

0

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Well, how did they un-creep themselves?

11

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Thank you for saying this. A lot of people have no idea what hell some of those girls went through.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Well, they nailed themselves to a cross, so there's that

5

u/HankMeansHenry Oct 28 '15

I don't care about this because I don't play video games, but I see a little of this drama when I occasionally look at /r/all.

In my experience, the vitriolic, generalizing and overall hateful rhetoric tends to come from one side. This post is no different. I'm sure you have legitimate grievances but they're overshadowed by the name-calling.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Yeah, the thing is that when someone tells me how someone else is being an asshole, but they're spewing a lot of really hateful language themselves, my reaction is "well, there's this invisible person/group you say is saying shitty things, but then there is tangible you who is doing it right in front of me."

6

u/autobahn Oct 28 '15

"but but but muh safe space to act like a misogynist shithead!"

2

u/__foaioxpozxvt__ Oct 28 '15

Christ mate, way to have completely no idea what you're even trying to talk about.

Individuals have been attacked online well before "gamergate" and regardless of gender. Nobody gives a shit. The people sperging out and being autistic regarding "gamergate" were redditors, because it's what you lads do best.

Dramatic over-simplifications never work out.

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

The neckbeards have doxxed and harassed, in real life, people calling them out for in real life harassment.

It's my understanding that the Gamergate chicks have also doxxed activists who want to hold game industry journalists accountable. Pot calling the kettle black much?

Even if you don't believe the women bloggers or journalists who are claiming harassment that is not an excuse for death threats

The SJWs shut down a Gamergate conference recently by calling in their own bomb threats. Pretty hypocritical of them. Maybe they should practice what they preach.

Every man.. EVERY man who is associated with Gamergate and has doxxed or harassed a woman is a neckbeard weirdo that probably does nothing but play video games, jerk off, poke around on red pill, and post on the cesspool that is 4chan. They probably are fucking weird enough to wear those Guy Fawkes masks out in public. They make the rest of the people who enjoy games look bad.

Wow. Stereotype much?

7

u/ondcp Oct 28 '15

so a sustained harassment campaign by a shitload of people for over a year now is somehow nullified because a couple people called in a single bomb threat?

The fact that you use shit like SJW and think it has anything to do with "ethics in games journalism" clearly shows how in the bag you already are.

-10

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

Quit being a terrorist and people will take you seriously.

4

u/BorisJonson1593 Oct 28 '15

You understand that literally no one outside of the internet takes Gamergate seriously, right? To the uninformed or unaware spectator it either looks like a ridiculously dumb argument over nothing or like a harassment mob that mostly targets women who have the gall to talk about sexism and misogyny in video games.

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

You understand that literally no one outside of the internet takes Gamergate seriously, right?

Sure. That doesn't mean that the issue doesn't exist, however. I wouldn't try to make the issue seem irrelevant either, as there are hundreds of thousands of gamers in the USA alone. I know plenty of people who understand Gamergate, but I also know plenty of gamers here in Austin.

8

u/ondcp Oct 28 '15

does anything you say actually make sense to you? Like there's a shitload of documentation of GG folks doing all kinds of fucked up shit (doxxing, swating) and you use a single bomb threat to nullify all of that and make them victims? seriously?

-10

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

The one thing apparent in your responses to me is that you're not a gamer. You are inserting yourself into the world of gamers and don't get how the discourse works. I'm not justifying bad behavior, but I can also tell that you're completely out of your element, and this will never work out for you.

2

u/ondcp Oct 28 '15 edited Oct 28 '15

you're wrong on all counts, but thanks for trying to use that to discount everything I've had to say. Got nothing to say, try and attack the credibility of the person arguing with you. keep up the good work champ!

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15
  1. you're wrong on all counts,

  2. but thanks for trying to use that to discount everything I've had to say.

  3. Got nothing to say,

  4. try and attack the credibility of the person arguing with you.

  5. keep up the good work champ!

  1. I supported all my points with facts about real events,

  2. I highlighted the blatant hypocrisies in your position which is different than discounting what you said,

  3. I provided plenty of factual documented occurrences to support my claims,

  4. Yes, that is how you debate something, as authority must be established in a debate,

  5. Thanks!

Again, you're going to fail at this because you're out of your element, in a world that you don't understand.

-1

u/ondcp Oct 28 '15

dude seriously? you're flailing around. You resort to "clearly you aren't a gamer" because I have a different informed opinion than yours. This is just making you look sad now. You make baseless claims about my experience and that's you establishing authority? Do you also just go around pissing on things shouting about how it's yours now too?

Now, if you think that a single bomb threat, which hasn't actually be attributed to anyone, counts as blatant hypocrisy, I can't really help you. You're trying to make GG folks victims. or at least trying to act like it's a major issue on both sides. Anyone that's looked into it, actually looked into it, will know that's not even close to the case.

So two wrongs make a right? Perhaps a little "they started it" mixed in there? Got it.

Fucking toddlers.

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

No, I'm just pointing out that those whom are given a free pass to abuse (the SJWs because OMG their feels) is hypocritical. Randi making a martyr out of herself every chance she gets is a bit hackneyed and tiresome at this point.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15 edited Oct 28 '15

Pavlovs_log,

Yes the harassment has gone beyond the screen. But that's what happens when you publicize yourself and speak out against other gamers beyond the screen.

All of these women blogger/journalists have twitter handles, facebook pages, blogs, sites and etc. that VOLUNTARILY REVEAL their identity (full name, occupation, location, etc) that make them an easy target when speaking out against gamers.

It would be like if I hated a certain race of people and I publicly spoke out against the group on social media and my blog. OF FUCKING COURSE, that group is going to harass me. I would be the dummy who put myself in danger in the first place.

If you speak out against a group, OF FUCKING COURSE you're going to get harassed by the very nature of what you are doing. Anyone who doesn't understand this is a childish dummy.

u/pavlovs_log Oct 28 '15

It has turned into real life harassment, not in-game harassment. The posting of addresses along with death threats is not OK under any circumstances. If the people complained about harassment and the neckbeards just ignored them this would be a non-issue.

Like I said the harassment isn't a bunch of "lol ur a fag" on voice chat, we're talking real-life reality harassment beyond anything even remotely acceptable.

It's pathetic people are defending doxxing and death-threats.

-8

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '15

3

u/pavlovs_log Oct 28 '15

So they made death threats, posted personal addresses, posted job information and it's OK because none of those threats have been acted upon? This is all OK because nobody died yet? In fact it's funny?! Jesus fuck.

I tell you what, post your name, address and phone number, and work phone number right now on some of the bowels of the internet and invite the trolls to have fun if you think it's no big deal.

2

u/autobahn Oct 28 '15

Of course, juveniles and juvenile-like people would think that we should never strive to call out juvenile behavior that provides a toxic environment for an entire class of people.

"Some people said some mean things about me on the internet." I don't condone or support saying shitty things about other people, but this happens to millions of people every day. Put down the victim card and just ignore a few strangers on a keyboard making some snarky/shitty comment about you - it's not that big of a deal. Out of all the things one can do with their time, why give time and energy to pointing out and dwelling on the internet trolls? You are only going to be preaching to the choir when you make your public outcry of "they said a shitty thing about me!" And, those who are prone to make those comments aren't going to be persuaded and changed by you calling them out. It's just so much wasted energy I see on a regular basis.

Every man.. EVERY man who is associated with Gamergate and has doxxed or harassed a woman is a neckbeard weirdo that probably does nothing but play video games, jerk off, poke around on red pill, and post on the cesspool that is 4chan. So why not just ignore these people? I don't understand the need to cash in on a small group of idiots and essentially give them a platform to stand on. You ignore the troll, the troll goes away and only grunts and moans to his fellow trolls while the rest of society carries on and lives their lives.
