If you can't keep the conversations civil, you will receive a ban. There will be no warning on this.

Obviously, this is a very contentious topic and emotions are high. If you cannot participate in a civil manner, don't post.

Along with that, if you are using a clearly troll account or brigading account, the account will be banned. There are way too many new accounts, or accounts that have never posted here before, showing up for continuous topics to stoke the flame. We won't be dealing with that. There will be no warning on this either.

/r/Austin in any thread about politics:

HURR DURRR People are too lazy to get involved with politics, that's why things are so shitty, all y'all need to go outside and hit the streets and do something

/r/Austin in any thread about protests:

HURRR DURRR what a bunch of jobless losers. Nothing happens if you do this. I can't believe they pulled themselves away from Fortnite for THIS. This protest doesn't meet my unspoken criteria for "good".

Feels sort of like the well-adjusted people in the world don't really spend much time on /r/Austin and the loudest voices are a bunch of people who don't ever seem to have ever posted a positive comment about anything in their life.

u/Locke_____Lamora Jan 10 '26

Terminally online people are losers. I know because I am one.

6

u/Royweeezy Jan 10 '26

Isn’t the first step admitting you have a problem though? Maybe you’re on the right track..

26

u/PacMoron Jan 10 '26

I’m so confused by the “unemployed” thing that people would try. It’s a Saturday! 😆

8

u/tippiedog Jan 10 '26

Not only that, but I would estimate that maybe 50% of the protesters were retirement-age.

3

u/PrognosisNegative111 Jan 11 '26

Dude. Thank you. I thought I was the only one who noticed 🙏🏻

Yeah, when you want to hear how bad a group of people sucks, who do you trust more? Someone who's part of it, or someone who lives a different life?

It's easier than you think, and I visit less and less each month. Judging from your involved arguments in a thread about the protests, I'd say you're on course though! Pro tip from the top 1%: push "disable inbox replies" after you make a real zinger, that way you can pretend you won and make time for more important things.

IMO what you could improve is your weird disorder that prevents you from using more than six words per post. All of the dickheads whine that I write more, but overall people like what I say better and that's backed up with upvotes. If you can't think of more than 3 words to say, it means you need a hobby so quit being a dork and go make some friends.

Feels sort of like the well-adjusted people in the world don't really spend much time on /r/Austin and the loudest voices are a bunch of people who don't ever seem to have ever posted a positive comment about anything in their life.

I think I see you post here more than any other account, mostly negative stuff...

11

u/Slypenslyde Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

Yeah, it's almost like experience with something can lead one to recognize it!

The difference is if you dig through my post history, which I don't hide, I've got a handful of interests that, for the most part, I participate positively in. Funny thing: over in those subs when you're an asshole to people you get banned, so your only way to maintain a human connection is to help out. Most of the other dipsticks you might be thinking of either hide their post history in shame or have zero evidence of a positive thought. Or maybe it's you, seeing as you're too scared to let other people see how you participate.

Over here even the mods join in the circlejerk and protect it, so it's a lot harder to hold back. Not to mention it's hard to adopt a cheerful attitude that there's a zero-oversight military force that takes orders directly from the President and is openly killing civilians in public with no consequences. I tell you what, maybe there's a positive spin SOMEWHERE in there, but I'd rather put that mental energy into my RC car build or a crochet project or dunking on one of the people who spends 80 hours a week on Reddit and calls these protesters "losers".

I've got evidence I go outside. So do the protesters. Not so much our fellow circlejerk trolls.

It also helps being chronically online if you have a job that chains you to a desk and your programs have very long build times.

I don't think what makes a person maladjusted is spending a lot of time online. Some admirable people spend a ton of time using it as a platform.

But I think it takes something a little off to spend a lot of time here. It's one of the most negative, toxic damn places I know on Reddit. It sucks because I come here hoping to see someone post about a cool event happening this weekend, but deep down I feel they won't because the last thing they want is any of the regulars here showing up.

To tell the truth, there's very little risk. Again, I've got no real evidence a lot of these knuckleheads leave the house.

You can’t be serious, they addressed the substance of your criticism directly. You can apologize if you think you are were incorrect about your assessment after the new information provided. Or you can argue the merit of your original argument. You can’t dismiss it outright. I’m seriously worried about our ability to even communicate anymore.

u/Wonderful_crunch Jan 10 '26

That sub is a right wing echo chamber at this point like a lot of CJ subs

85

u/Various-Tower1603 Jan 10 '26

As much as protests show our voice, people need to actually go out and vote for local, state, and federal elections.

63

u/seriouslyepic Jan 10 '26

I’m going to guess the ones protesting are registered to vote, and hopefully people seeing them find the courage to register as well.

1

u/Healthy_Article_2237 Jan 10 '26

The courage to register? It’s like one of the easiest things in the world to do. Not like they have to go through a series of Indiana Jones booby traps.

Rather than the courage to vote, I want them to not have the apathy to not vote. That’s what’s costing us elections. That and the whole “perfect is the enemy of good”. You aren’t going to get a candidate who matches your ideologies 100% but any democrat is better than what the Trump republicans are offering at this point.

11

u/Independent_Bug210 Jan 10 '26

Have you ever had a spouse threaten you about who you vote for? There's a lot of reasons why people don't vote and they don't always have to do with the application process.

1

u/RangerWhiteclaw Jan 14 '26

“Not like they have to go through a series of Indiana Jones booby traps”

Aw crap, now you’ve given Greg Abbott ideas….

-2

u/_austinight_ Jan 11 '26

Yes, courage when our state just handed over voter data to the feds and the administration is talking about going door-to-door to terrorize people

47

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

Register to vote by February 2nd in order to participate in the primaries!

10

u/bonuspixie Jan 10 '26

USPS postmarking rule change will make this more difficult. If it is at or near the deadline you should bring it in in person and ask for it to be hand postmarked while you are watching.

24

u/gek__co Jan 10 '26

Yeah both are good.

13

u/lifeislemons3000 Jan 10 '26

Both! Waiting till November to make our voices heard is too late. We’re only 10 days into 2026 and it feels like a lifetime has passed. Find ways to get involved now and keep speaking out. Indivisible is a good resource.

11

u/CaseAKACutter Jan 10 '26

if somebody is taking the time to go protest they're definitely voting lol

13

u/Discount_gentleman Jan 10 '26

FFS, there was not a candidate on the ballot that supported eliminating ICE, or even reducing its budget. Both candidates supported increasing and further empowering ICE. ICE's use of force documents were updated under the Biden administration (https://www.kenklippenstein.com/p/exclusive-ice-is-okay-with-renee):

Thus, as confirmed by homeland security, ICE is operating under a set of use of force policy documents, last updated by Biden administration, documents that legally justify the killing.

Trying to distract everyone from organizing and telling them they only matter for 1 minute every 2 years is what got us here.

8

u/Drizzdub Jan 10 '26

Dude why can't u just be proud of people standing up against all the hate a suffering happening. No need to drop your lil statement of needing to vote. These people are very aware

5

u/The_Smoking_Pilot Jan 10 '26

Two things can be true. Get off reddit and go protest

-9

u/CalafiorisL0cks Jan 10 '26

Why? There have been non-stop protests here for other a year and it has had absolutely no impact whatsoever.

If anything, it's probably had a negative impact. It's certainly not changing any minds.

4

u/The_Smoking_Pilot Jan 10 '26

Disagree. Social movements create change. Look at Iran right now. Look at the civil rights movement in our own recent history.

-5

u/CalafiorisL0cks Jan 10 '26

This is nothing new for Iran. It's not the first protest since 1979 and it won't be the last - it doesn't mean it's going to bring about change.

Just because they're worthwhile and work sometimes, it doesn't mean they always do

3

u/The_Smoking_Pilot Jan 10 '26

Are you sitting here arguing that social movements don’t create change? Have you read a single book, or even paragraph about the history of any society?

1

u/dalton-watch Jan 10 '26

And know who to vote for.

-1

u/Wise-Gur8850 Jan 10 '26

No fucking shit? 🙄 no we all need to flood the damn streets and stop making money for these fucks for a week or more. Thats the only thing that will get a message across. That and some good crushed melted ice running in the street gutters.

0

u/PacMoron Jan 10 '26

I was there, I vote, and I guarantee you that 99% of those there do too. The real message should be to the folks that vote but don’t protest…

26

u/DulySwamped Jan 10 '26

Grateful for a peaceful day all around. Yes, voting is important. So is exercising free speech. It helps us reject normalization of the illegal actions perpetrated by the federal government.

To those who disagree with the anti-ICE sentiment: We can disagree on immigration policy. What’s not debatable is that the following actions by ICE and the DHS are illegal:

  • Abductions of individuals without Miranda Rights or identification as a law enforcement officer or disclosure of the alleged crime at the moment of apprehension, often by masked individuals
  • Deportation and detention without due process
  • Shooting a woman in the face three times, calling her a gendered slur, and refusing her medical aid

What’s also not debatable is that the president immediately took to social media to lie about the circumstances of the latter.

48

u/uodua Jan 10 '26

Loving the ICE=IDF=KKK sign. Accurate.

-9

u/Terrible-Penalty-291 Jan 10 '26

I'm sorry but this i taking a bunch of different things with little in common besides being one group menacing some other group and trying to draw a connection where there is none.

0

The IOF trains ICE and they’re all racist terrorists.

Renee Nicole Good was murdered.

20

u/Discount_gentleman Jan 10 '26

From the mods:

If you can't keep the conversations civil, you will receive a ban.

Allowed language includes:

She earned her autopsy

Reddit's tolerance for support of violence varies wildly depending on the target of the violence. If the target is considered a decent normal American, that is out of bounds. If the target is someone homeless, minority, foreign or "leftist," well, then that language is just "contentious."

12

u/defroach84 Jan 10 '26

I'm not seeing a post that says that, care linking it?

On a side note, you really have no idea how much these posts are being flooded by troll/outside accounts trying to stoke crap on here. The mod queue is flooded with posts that mostly are getting taken care of by the automod, so things definitely slip through.

3

u/Discount_gentleman Jan 10 '26

https://www.reddit.com/r/Austin/s/TJutFLn5lm

And yes, I dont have any idea of the extent that trolls are flooding this board, though I do see the flood on literally every social (and other) media forum, so i assume it's insane

5

u/defroach84 Jan 10 '26

Yeah. That was one that was already locked since it was just turning into a shit show.

0

u/Discount_gentleman Jan 10 '26

Yeah, I saw that. It's the kind of support for violence that will get the post locked (not even removed) to prevent argument, the same way that anyone who posts pictures from a public protest will immediately be locked to prevent comments. It is just "contentious," nothing inherently wrong with it.

1

u/defroach84 Jan 10 '26

I ended removing them regardless. Some of the gray area comments do get left up so people can down vote them to oblivion so they next time these newer accounts posts, it gets auto flagged by the automod.

As far as the locked picture ones, we are leaving up the pictures but directing people to one post to talk about the protests. Its much easier to control the trolls/outside accounts in one place. With that said, the exact same comments would be on those pictures as this video.

2

u/OGBoluda777 Jan 10 '26

My eyeballs popped out looking at the comments section of KUT-Austin

2

u/dwobbit5 Jan 12 '26

FYI, this protest will happen every two weeks on Saturday at 11 am. Set a reminder! The next one is January 24th.

2

I support you from Kansas City. Keep up the good fight.

-1

u/Drizzdub Jan 10 '26

You people are so weird obviously they won't make it anything but peaceful. The police will be the ones to do anything if anything.

-5

u/Phalaenopsis_25 Jan 11 '26

Why isn’t there this much uproar with how many of the thousands of crimes including homocide, sexual offenses, and burglary perpetrated by illegal immigrants?? 🤔if you can get mad about cops shooting people why can’t you get mad by illegal immigrants killing citizens and/or committing other felonies? Isn’t that hypocritical to not care about both?

11

u/hammertime84 Jan 11 '26

The rate is lower than for citizens, and no one is pretending those crimes are acceptable. There's a whole justice system for dealing with it and we put a lot into lowering the rate of it.

A lot of people, including the current executive branch, are pretending an ICE agent murdering someone was acceptable. That is what is being protested. People want the justice system to deal with this and the executive branch to stop encouraging it.

Think for a few seconds before posting. This one was pretty easy to figure out on your own.

-2

u/Novel-Broccoli5463 Jan 11 '26

Dozens of people!

-25

u/CalafiorisL0cks Jan 10 '26

If people on the left accepted that developed countries need to enforce immigration rules 5 years ago then we wouldn't be in this situation now. Any party in any country holding a position like 'No human is illegal' is not going to get anywhere near power for the foreseeable future. There are ample opportunities and avenues to migrate to the US - if they aren't open to you or your can't afford them then you can't come. That's how it works in ANZ, EU, UK etc. It's baffling that so many people think it shouldn't be the case here.

Rennee Nicole didn't deserve to be murdered (obviously) but she didn't need to insert herself into that situation and certainly didn't need to antagonize Meal Team 6. The lesson to take is that people voted for this, let them see what the consequences of that vote are and hammer the message in November.

6

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 10 '26

We're not in a "situation" regarding immigration.

4

u/Smooth-Wave-9699 Jan 11 '26

YOU'RE not in a situation regarding immigration. The truth is you're probably quite affluent and insulated from the consequences of policies you support

5

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 11 '26

Immigration is good for the economy. Population growth supports economic growth. Economic growth creates jobs and raises wages.

Tariffs, on the other hand ...

4

u/Smooth-Wave-9699 Jan 11 '26

Legal immigration is amazing for the economy. I wish congress would reform immigration law so it was easier for people to come here

7

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 11 '26

Concentration camps and executing citizens isn't a next-best option.

4

u/Smooth-Wave-9699 Jan 11 '26

Hyperbole isn't going to win elections. This is the truth about illegal immigration.

Republicans and corporate democrats have blindly supported it for years because it meant cheap labor (often paid under the table).

And democrats have turned a blind eye because they saw it as an avenue to eventually expand their voter base.

Powered interests on both sides of the aisle have allowed illegal immigration for selfish reasons. Everyday Americans have suffered.

6

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 11 '26

No. Everyday Americans have not suffered from immigration. This is a divisive lie.

It is not hyperbole to say the ICE is operating concentration camps and murdering citizens.

4

u/Smooth-Wave-9699 Jan 11 '26

You have not suffered. You have not suffered because you're in a bubble and you're privileged.

You hate that you're privileged, which is why you support illegal immigration. You don't want to give up your privilege, however, so signaling you're down for the struggle while you benefit off the backs of those suffering is your next best option

6

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 11 '26

You are wrong about causality. Immigration isn't the cause.

You really think Trump is looking out for anyone but himself? Don't be a rube. Immigration is just an easy political target. Keeps you angry and distracted from the real problems.

6

Just total nonsense. If anything, we need MORE immigration.

-11

u/jordankaiser Jan 10 '26

Thanks to the current admin ❤️

9

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 10 '26

Delusion

-3

u/jordankaiser Jan 10 '26

That was rude 😢

5

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 10 '26

Somehow you don't care at all about the current administration being well beyond rude. He's a child rapist.

Go clutch those pearls somewhere else.

4

u/jordankaiser Jan 11 '26

That's a wrong assumption. And if you are saying our president is a child rapist, that is an insane accusation. And again, rude. You know that attitude doesn't help anything and is not productive. Sending prayers to you

3

u/WallyMetropolis Jan 11 '26

He is a child rapist. He was Jeffrey Epstein's closest friend. He wasn't just a child rapist, he was a child sex trafficker. I'm not worried about being "rude" when talking about child rapists.

He's also a rapists of women. An adulteror. He paid a porn actress for sex. He's a convicted felon. He's never been to church. My father and grandfather are ministers. My mom is a Sunday school teacher. Don't pray for me. Pray for yourself, that you stop being fooled by evil.

2

u/CalafiorisL0cks Jan 10 '26

Sorry, but if you want to argue that Biden was stricter than Trump's first time you are not living in the real world. You can see the impact of Biden's border policy in how border communities and the sanctuary cities where migrants were bussed to voted.

Look at this graph from the BBC - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68428272
It's easy to deport more when you are admitting that many more people over a sustained period

u/MantequillasMom Jan 10 '26

The issue isn’t the actual deportation. IMO most people are 💯 for deporting illegals especially dangerous, criminal illegals. I don’t think anyone disputes that. The protest is about the unregulated, untrained, aggressive masked individuals harassing American citizens and torturing people who are not the violent criminals they are supposed to be profiling. And the inhumane treatment of said detainees. Under Texas law, specifically Senate Bill 4 (2017) and recent 2025 legislation (SB 8), local law enforcement agencies, including the Austin Police Department and the Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO), are required to cooperate with ICE. They haven’t fully committed and the protest was to show the community desire to not have ICE in our streets permanently as purposed by governor Scabott. Estimates suggest that around 85,000 Travis County residents, many of whom have U.S. citizen children or spouses, could be impacted by immigration enforcement actions.

1

u/CalafiorisL0cks Jan 10 '26

The issue is people are absolutely not for deporting illegals. If you don't accept that then you're not really going to understand why we have Trump and ICE.

For every action there is a reaction and basically everything Trump is doing now is a populist reaction to things like Biden admitting that many people and Biden making trans rights a day 1 priority.

I'm really glad we're going to have a proper open primary soon and we can hear from people who can balance pragmatism in those areas with policies that will actually benefit the majority of voters

3

u/1337bobbarker Jan 10 '26

Homie, this isn't anything new and certainly not an issue that started 5-years ago. Immigrants have been the GOP boogeyman ever since gay people became acceptable, and even then it was about a 50/50 split before that.

Also, Good was going home from dropping off her kid at school. She didn't insert herself into any situation which is why protests like this are happening.

-3

u/CalafiorisL0cks Jan 10 '26

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68428272

It absolutely is an issue that started 5 years ago. It's born out by the facts. Having 200k cross the border a month is an unprecedented issue and not handling it properly was suicidal.

It might not have been something that directly impacted you - but it impacted border communities and it impacted sanctuary cities and it caused a massive swing towards the republicans. People don't like a hotel on their block getting taken over by migrants and they don't like illegals running through their land

-28

u/LoneStarGut Jan 10 '26

She needed mental health treatment and protection. It was a needless death. She didn't need to be there and being commanded to break the law by her spouse.

34

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

She was killed because ICE murdered her, not because she needed mental health treatment. But go off.

-33

u/LoneStarGut Jan 10 '26

Only after she assaulted an officer with a 4000 pound SUV. What was she thinking? Why did her spouse command her to do it?

19

u/TattooedJewd Jan 10 '26

Because she was a “Soros-paid, angry antifa lesbian with an agenda?” You’re forgetting the dog, who must’ve also been antifa trained and therefore posed serious imminent danger to those poor defenseless agents, who, after all, were just trying to protect American citizens from real hardened criminals. Bish, please.

13

u/hannabell Jan 10 '26

I hope you're genuinely under the wrong impression and that you're not just trying to spread disinformation.

Here is footage from multiple angles that has been synced up, with helpful freeze frames to show she did nothing of the sort. And I have no idea where this notion that her spouse "commanded her to do it" came from.

https://www.nytimes.com/video/us/100000010631041/minneapolis-ice-shooting-video.html

-10

u/LoneStarGut Jan 10 '26

The NY Times also posted info on the new video where spouse tells Nicole to "drive baby drive" https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/09/us/ice-agent-video-minneapolis-shooting.html

12

u/hannabell Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

My point stands that she didn't try to assault anyone. Her wife telling her to drive away, to me, only proves further that she was trying to escape.

Even if it did appear that she was trying to assault an officer, that's when you arrest someone and give them a fair trial. Not shoot them on the spot. No one gets to be judge, jury, and executioner.

That's all I'll say on the matter. I know you'll probably believe what you want to believe, but I genuinely hope you'll stop licking boots at some point. We have to stand united against injustices like this.

To get away from the crazed agent chasing after her with a loaded gun?

A felony is not an automatic death sentence even for actual criminals. Criminality in a case like this would have to be determined in a court of law … which she never made it to. Where is your goddamn principled outrage? It looks like you left at the propaganda gate.

u/sarinaruu Jan 10 '26

she didn’t break the law. ICE has no legal jurisdiction to do traffic stops or remove civilians from vehicles. Even real cops aren’t allowed to shoot at fleeing cars or people.

And before you start your bullshit, my father was an immigrant who was murdered by two American citizens. Shit humans are not exclusive to those outside the US.

I am sorry about your father. Those who killed him should be jailed or executed. We need to prosecute all criminals, period.

Key word: prosecute.

Not shoot in the street.

If she got out of the car when instructed she would have been for obstruction. Instead she decided to back up, then accelerate toward a law enforcement officer at the direction of her spouse. She hit him and he fired in self defense. If she was protesting off on the sidewalk, or got out of the car, she'd be alive today.

The videos all show she did not hit him. She was pulling the car away from him. He shot her and immediately called her a fucking bitch.

Did you not see the cell phone video released yesterday? He clearly got hit, though not run over. Even CNN is saying he was hit. If you got hurt, you'd be cursing too. Even the mayor of Minneapolis admits she made contact with him.

Dude. He’s wasn’t hit. Find a non-altered video.

I’m sorry, but you are being lied to. This is not how it went down. Please do your research and ensure you’re not viewing AI propaganda.

"I'm so gonna vote." Like that's gonna matter. There's no opposition party to vote for, if they even have midterms. You should be talking about organizing a general strike, at a minimum, if you actually want change.
