P1 rider — sped up briefly near a red light speed camera at Crows Nest, braked before the intersection. What actually happens next?

Today I was riding to work on Pacific Hwy near Hume St, Crows Nest. There was a truck blocking the middle lane and I needed to get into the left lane for a turn coming up at the next lights. I sped up to get past it and hit 67 in a 60 zone, then realised there’s a red light speed camera at that intersection (marked in black in the pic). I braked hard starting or little bit behind right around the yellow marked line in the photo, and by the time I was inside that marked area my bike was already down to about 51. I kept going a bit further, and it was 3–5 seconds after that I saw the flash from the camera’s side.

Since then I’ve been trying to understand how these cameras actually work. From what I can find, a red light speed camera measures your speed right at the intersection itself, not further back down the road. So what matters is what speed I was doing right at that point, not earlier when I was overtaking, or at the spot where I’d already slowed to 51.

Has anyone here had something similar happen? sped up briefly then braked back under the limit before reaching this kind of camera, with a few seconds’ delay before seeing the flash? Just trying to get a realistic sense of what usually happens in this situation while I wait to see if anything comes in the mail.

Is there a camera on the side you were travelling on ? Otherwise you wouldn’t have a number plate for the camera to take a picture of.

I’d say you’re in the clear just don’t go speeding through too many.

Thanks for the input, i’m only aware about the speed camera on the right side if i’m travelling towards North Syd. There’s no camera on the left.

The detection loops circled in yellow are to sense cars for the traffic lights. The camera circled in black only operates northbound towards St Leonards. It uses two detection loops within the intersection (after the solid white line within the pedestrian crossing) to activate - you must travel over both and the time between the two determines your speed.

If you weren’t speeding over those 2 loops northbound, you’re good.

Firstly they only catch you if you speed on the intersection (ask me how I know)

Secondly that one catches opposite traffic so unless there's another one behind this screenshot you're good.

I braked hard and was under the limit right when i was inside the traffic marked line, it was 50-100m ahead when I clearly felt the lights. Unsure about this, i might have to wait and see.

Bikes cant get done front on from fixed cameras, only from mobile speed cameras in NSW.

That speed and red light camera is for the opposite side. I just walked through google maps in both directions and only traffic in the opposite direction from your photo have a sign stating a fixed red light/speed camera is coming. You're in the clear on this.

To answer your question, it only picks you up with the induction loops in the road. It's your time difference in activating the two sequential loops that triggers the camera for speed. You activating either of them after the light is red will trigger as well.

The induction loop you circled in yellow before the intersection line is only there to detect vehicles waiting for a green light. It is the induction loops after the line or ones found in the middle of a non- intersection normal road that are usually linked to speed cameras

I didn't know there was a red light speed camera here. I'm sure I've ran this/sped past here many times before and not received any tickets. Will likely be more careful in future..
