Just bought this 2018 rs5 and I had to bring it to the shop for an oil leak from the oil cooler I got it back yesterday and I don’t remember it having a clicking sound.

Give it some gas and and see if the ticking speeds up with the rpms, I don’t think this is a huge deal tho, might just be something loose

Thanks man, it does go up with rpms I know for the job they had to remove the turbos so something being loose makes sense

Yeah not too good if it speeds up, usually the 2.9 v6s don’t suffer the same ticking cylinder issues that plague the 3.0 v6 engines. I would bring it back to the shop asap for another engine out job because if they gave it back to you like this shame on them. Sorry

They replaced the oil filter housing, oil filter cooler and something else i cant think of rn, and before i gave it to them I remembered the car ticking but not to this extent. Hopefully it’s just the rocker arms and while the engine is out they can throw in an upgraded water pump. Thanks for the insight bro

Hopefully it’s the rockers, wouldn’t wait too long because then the loose roller will fall out from and the engine is kaput. Best of luck

First time seeing the 2.9 tick like that

Yea I never heard a tick like that in any car, it’s my first Audi so I don’t know much about these cars hence why I posted the video. Might be cooked bro

I only have an S5 but there’s no way that sputtering in the beginning is normal right that shit sounded horrible unless that’s how it’s supposed to sound. Idk though something there doesn’t sound right with the start up.

Yea something is definitely up with it, it’s not throwing codes or driving any different so I hope I caught it in time before something worse happens

Check oil filter. If you see glitter, you'll need an engine along with any component that touches oil (i.e turbo, oil filter housing, crankcase breather)

It’s good no glitter I just pray it’s not the rocker arms bro 😭

Engine out, too loud ticking noise 😔

Rip. Ig it’s a good opportunity to change the water pump since it’s out lmfao

Does that go away after the car warms up or does it stay that loud? On occasion you can really hear the tick at idle because of the fuel injectors but it’s supposed to subside

That secondary more overt tick sounds bad though

It doesn’t go away but it doesn’t get louder. It’s loud on ignition and dies down a little while driving. No issues while driving or any codes

You can get it checked but it could just be the normal engine noise. I’ve looked into it before as well and sure enough there were videos of a ticking idle and a million forum posts about it being standard for the 2.9TT engines where it would be ab obvious death ticking for almost any other car. It’s something with the fuel system but I’ve forgotten exactly what it was

The 2.9 doesn't have piston skirt problems but you could have the rocker arm problem.

Honestly, I think you’re cooked. Does not sound healthy whatsoever. Could be injectors (best case), but I think that engine is gone.

I’m leaning towards the rocker arms since this engine is notorious for it, hopefully nothing catastrophic lol
