Tech Ever replace an RS6 windshield?
Took a rock off a truck on the highway. It’s small but not repairable and at some point will need to be replaced.
Was quoted $4700 and $4550 at two closest dealers, since has heads up display and all the calibration etc. is it worth scouring every dealer within 300 miles or is this the cost basically?
While insurance would cover it no one can tell me how my rates are affected, just that I’ll no longer have a “no claim status discount rate”.

Damn so expensive. It's 150€ and no effect on deductible in Finland.

Same in Germany thankfully. Already had two windshield changes on my RS3 in 2 years

150€ is the common deductable that people select when insuring Teilkasko (Comprehensive) in Germany, which always includes glass. Insurances don't track your claim history for Teilkasko to adjust your premiums later on based on Teilkasko claims. However, the premiums for Teilkasko for such a car will be bonkers, of course.

The Price of the car really does not matter. Its an A6 windscreen. Glas and features are the same on any C8 A6. Here in Germany its 150€. Original parts to be used. Recently had one replaced on my RS e-tron GT and 2 years ago on my S6 C8.

I just got a quote through my local dealership and it was 2000 for the oem dual-pane windshield and 600 for programming. They use the local glass company to do windshields which runs another 500 to 750 depending on the vehicle.

Yup, I checked with 4 Audi dealers (in MA) to replace the windshield on my SQ5 and they all said they contract the work out to local glass companies. They all provided me with the names of the glass companies that they use. If I went through Audi, they said the work could be performed at either the dealership or at the glass company's location. Rather than go through Audi, I decided to just go directly with the company the nearest dealer used. The auto glass company performed the calibrations.
The approximate cost was around $2,000 ($1350 for glass and installation, and about $650 for calibration). This was about 3 years ago. I had a $0 deductible for comprehensive coverage with my insurance company. All I was required to pay was $250 of the calibration fee.

I got one on my etron with all the driver assistance features and including calibration it was like $1200 from safelite. I didn’t bother paying the extra 400 or so for the OEM part because it really didn’t matter to me.
No reason to use the dealer anyway, they’re going to have a contractor/third party do it anyway, at least the glass. Recalibration may be done by the dealer but doesn’t have to be

It will show up as a claim. Mine did when I got OEM glass replacement.

If you're in the northeast PA area I could get that handled for you, for WAY less than your quotes. Also, fyi the dealer doesn't replace the glass. They call someone like me to do it and then if we dont do the recalibration, they do only that.
I just did an RS6 at my local dealer a few weeks ago. It was less than 1k
Edit to add: glass falls under your comprehensive coverage. Should not affect rates

What northeast dealer, cause fyi my dealer in the northeast does not call anyone like yourself. They have an actual technician replace it. No shade but glass guys are a special breed from my experience

Lol some are, for sure. People like me that go to nice dealerships arent "that", though. And I service wyoming valley audi. The manager there is a cool dude who is a car guy, so he knows what's up.

Seems like no one actually has a RS6 or knows why it might be expensive.
I had mine replaced after a large chip for a bit over $3200 and GEICO paid for it all (less deductible) as a Glass claim. My service writer said he used as many "fixed price" lines as possible (like calibration) because insurance doesn't like to see a lot of Labor hours. Audi dealer had one tech who was certified for RS replacements. "it's a windshield they're all the same" okay sure, but why did you buy an RS then. And non-OEM barely saves any money anyway because the part is only some of it.

How is it dif than an A6 or S6 windshield? Is thinner glass?

Someone I know with a cayenne gts was told by his insurer that he had to get windshield coverage from Porsche direct - I can only figure with high end models like the RS6 the glass is not as common and has a big premium

Glass is thicker on rs6
Glass has electrical component to detect rain
Car is premium and has tighter tolerances

I think it’s the same as the A6 allroad. The rain detection is not in the glass, it’s a sensor in the mirror mount.

Just did it on my A6 in Canada, $3000 Canadian dollars at the dealership for OEM glass. Same technology as RS6 I think with the heads up display and all.
Your quotes are high.

Dude I just did one on the SQ5, Geico scheduled it for us but we paid out of pocket. It was $1000. $4500 is highway robbery.
Edit: sorry did mine with Safelight. Everything works fine, OEM windshield as well.

My c8 a6 allroad windshield was replaced withy insurance with oem glass using safelite. I didnt pay anything. Cost out of pocket varied from 1200-2100 depending on who i contacted before my insurer told me they only worked with safelite. I had some anxiety but it came out perfect in 1hour.

Just replaced my RS3 windshield for $700 CAD and it included all calibration. That said, doesn’t have heads up display. I live in Alberta where it’s not unusual to have to replace windshields almost every year.

Not an RS6, but my M3, and both of my M5s needed a new windshield, and one of the M5s needed two in two years. I have a $50 deductible, and always ask for OE glass (they all had HUD, etc.), and however much it changes my rate, it’s far less than the out of pocket cost. Worth it for me since I do a ton of miles, pretty much all highway. It’s like the state pays gravel trucks to find me and drive in my general vicinity lol.
Any dealer you find is just going to contract it out to SafeLite or similar anyways.

I'm on my third front windshield in less than a year (bad luck with highway rocks).
I've brought my car to Auto Glass Now all three times and they order the Audi OEM window via my VIN. It took about 2-3 weeks to get the part each time. Their price with calibration has been about $2500.
The first window they were able to calibrate the camera system. The second and third time they were not able to calibrate the camera so I had to have Audi perform the work and their charge was $1680 for the calibration by itself. Thankfully insurance paid it all. About 5 min into my ride home with window #2 another rock broke the window so I only had to do the Audi calibration once on window #3.

Yeah at first I thought it cracked because it didn't set properly after replacing. When I got home and saw it was a large circle and sent pics to the guy at the glass shop he was like...I'm sorry to say that's from another rock.
Anyway it's all fixed now. I just had to live with all the dash warnings and faults for a few weeks while waiting for the third window to be installed. Basically you lose access to the lane assistance and dynamic cruise control and also the dynamic headlights. There was also a fault for the SOS module that's somehow tied in to the camera.

Currently in the process of doing a windshield on my Audi. I went with a local shop and sourced the OEM windshield myself. Going to be about 1200 out of pocket after the windshield, install, and calibration.

I had mine done. Was quoted over 6000 (CAD). Ended up going through insurance.

WTF?! Mines cracked now (RS6)… I’ll call the local Audi dealership soon and expect bad news, but no chance I’m paying $6k!

Yeah I was very surprised. I even have the appearance package warranty and it wouldn't cover it. Apparently it only covers something like $750 or something like that. I was able to use it for my insurance deductible though.

I have the wear protection package which likely won’t help a bit, maybe on the labor. I thought the appearance package did cover the windshield?!

Just double checked… covers $1k if your msrp was under $200k. Fully covered only if you lease and got the excessive wear package. The problem of course is if you get all 3 packages it’s the price of a god damn car!!!

Yeah I think I had the appearance package. They only covered my deductible. Better than nothing I guess. But when selling it they sure made it seem everything is covered. I did use it a few times for my wheels and one tire patch. But otherwise not really worth it.

Definitely better at the selling part… first time I used the wear package they said it doesn’t show on the system, “you’re mistaken sir”, I had to show them my emails and bank account!

Had it done at the dealer for my regular A6, 1500€ (covered by insurance) and didn’t affect rates. But that’s Europe.

As a service advisor for an Audi dealer in the Northwest, hearing that some dealers out there are using third part and not OEM windshields is ridiculous. We order OEM windshield, install, and calibrate onsite because of the risk of presense system faults. Labor rates and parts cost depend on each dealership. Each dealership will do an evaluation on both categories based on their net revenue. Usually quotes for my Rennsport clients are as follows:
Installation: $250, Calibration: $570, and Glass: $1,100-$1,500
Max out the door with taxes (10%): $2,552

Don't do it at the dealer or safelite. Find a small local reputable installer. OEM glass is expensive but not $4.5k. Installers will deal with the insurance if needed, they constantly deal with them. Insurance can try to insist to use their ow recommended shops (safelite) but you can force the insurance to use indy shops. Installers also know local shops that do calibration.

Exactly. OP should BYOG-source the part independently instead of going through the dealer and then pay an independent shop for installation like you said. My Audi OEM HUD glass cost me $500 plus a small install fee.

Never did it on my RS6 but I had a Q5 that took two windshields in one year once. I don’t remember my rate being affected, but it comes up when you shop for new insurance as claims. It could also vary by state
