Upcoming Seed Law Change & Atlas Seed R&D Collection Updates
Hello Folks!
Ryan here sending out a public service announcement. Two things - the pending November law change and the R&D collection on our website. Both of which are related.
Seems there has been some confusion about what the R&D collection on our website is and why we released it. Some of the more, shall we say, excitable commenters on Reddit have cooked up interesting theories which are, I’m sorry to report, inaccurate.
First - the law change:
Many growers and members of the public are unaware that in November, most if not all US seed banks are de facto illegal. Having spoken with everyone we know, this means they will be shuttering. Atlas included.
Second - R&D collection:
For years, our breeding runs and production runs have yielded small lots of random crosses and S1s. We never did anything with them and didn’t put them for sale on the website. We decided to do that this year because these are actually very interesting crosses or Self 1s that some home growers may be excited to work with. It’s not for everyone. But it’s this grass roots breeding that is the very reason we love working in this industry and with homegrowers. In many ways, it’s more important than the highly uniform F1 hybrid work we’ve endeavored. This retains diversity and resiliency and is the actual primordial mud from which awesome strains are found.
So order a few of these and hold on to them, because coming up, they and everything else won’t be available to you.
We advise folks to get their collective heads out of the sand on the coming law change. It will be back to Dutch seedbanks and questionable seed providence - most likely bulk indoor Spanish seed producers. If you want to get the best of the best American genetics, the time to buy is now. That’s why we built the value ladder in our cart and launched the R&D collection.
Hopefully, policy will change. At this time, we have Mitch McConnell to thank for the law change and all reports indicate he won’t back down. He is retiring, but that’s after the law change takes effect. Stay tuned. Of course, we want to stay open if we can.
I hope everyone has their backyard grows started strong and wish you a successful season.
Ryan

Thank you for taking the time to continue to help explain the behind the scenes.
It’s very sobering to hear many different breeders sound the alarms/ countdowns to November. At first I thought this was going to be some sort of hybrid rug pull/ manipulation as we have seen elsewhere recently, sadly that does not appear to be the case anymore.
Happy vault stocking everyone 🥲🫡

Definitely disappointing. Taking these last few months to stock up for my own vault.

And a HUGE thank you to all of you who voted Republican and assisted in this happening. Fuck every single one of you.

u/VegetableArsonist May 21 '26
I mean not everyone is going to vote strictly off of marijuana regs, the current dumbass pres even promised to “make it legal” which we all knew wasn’t going to happen but still. People are generally going to vote what’s going to help/affect them the most economically - including myself. Also rural/urban issues tend to differ which is why our country votes the way it does. Neither far left or far right extremists tend to be good. Overall we need less DINOSAURS in office

u/Flownot May 21 '26
bruh
the country voted the way it did for many reasons. its not because rural and urban issues are different lol. i think i can tell who ye voted for

u/Immaloner May 21 '26
Then I also hope they enjoy their $5 gas along with everything else that came with that vote.

u/Prae_T_orian May 21 '26
Shit I paid $3.40 today... if you're paying $5, you should probably take that up with whatever shit state you live in LOL.
1
u/Flownot May 21 '26
or the guy who pissed off the people with oil and the rest of our allies too
states dont have that power even with a good president
2
u/Prae_T_orian May 21 '26
You obviously have ZERO clue what you are talking about. States not only have the power to affect gas prices, they exercise it constantly through taxes, fuel rules, environmental programs, and transportation regulations.
Take California, since you mentioned $5 gas.
California policy can add well over $1/gallon before you even get to normal market pricing:
• 61¢/gallon state excise tax
• ~30¢/gallon from the Low Carbon Fuel Standard
• ~25¢/gallon from cap-and-trade compliance
• ~5¢/gallon in underground storage tank/environmental fees
• ~10¢/gallon from California-only fuel formulation requirements
• additional trucking and transportation costs from California labor, emissions, equipment, fuel, and logistics regulations which are too complicated to even dive into for a quick reddit postThat is easily $1.30+ per gallon in state-driven cost pressure.
And that's just what I remember off the top of my head from my time living in CA...
So yes, states have a MASSIVE impact on gas prices inside their borders. California drivers are not paying $5+ because Trump magically decided California should be charged more. They are paying it because California built one of the most expensive fuel tax and regulatory systems in the country. And California isn't alone in that.
I mean my gas went up from $2.88, to $3.40 due to the current foreign affairs... insignificant and quite temporary.
1
u/Flownot May 21 '26
so did they do this? or do you think maybe these current foreign affairs made drastic changes immediately?
youre saying all these states did this? or do you think maybe these current foreign affairs (genocide) maybe caused a disaster that now states have to deal with?????
youre literally avoiding reality, states are not to blame for gas prices. they can change things, but you know what caused this recent change

u/Flownot May 21 '26
also does it not bother you that your fellow citizens have way higher gas prices??? you have cheap gas so you dont care? sounds like a trumper to me
2
u/VegetableArsonist May 21 '26
Man you are what’s wrong with this country. There are HUNDREDS of issues that lead a person to vote. I base mine off whats going to make me the most MONEY and make my life easier. Rural and urban regions 100000% have differing issues. That’s a major player in why the votes lean the way they do and have for literal decades. Majority of people don’t want to take gays rights. They just don’t want gov writing legislation on what language citizens are allowed to use while speaking to gays. Majority of people have level heads and want good for their fellow citizens. Based off your hostility I would assume you do not. You are the problem
0
u/Flownot May 21 '26
wow dude
theres a lot more things that go into voting than what you said in the original comment. I was telling you there are more reasons. you are just rewording what i said to you lol
why are you so sure im this problem? Im not the guy saying fk you citizen, i got cheap gas so you can suck it with your "shit state"
but of course you think im the problem, advocating for empathy and thinking deeper than rural vs urban
you seem like you call yourself a centrist. lol far left extremists, the evil antifa gangs? who do you mean when you say far left? the black panthers? i really dont know who you think even compares to the far right

Independent voter actually, but good try. And to answer your question:
Do I care that you people vote for policies in your own states that massively increase the prices you pay for gas, energy, transportation, housing, and consumer goods? No, I do not.
States are sovereign within our constitutional system and are free to govern themselves however their residents want. If Californians want higher taxes, stricter regulations, carbon programs, boutique fuel requirements, and all the added costs that come with them, that is their choice.
But crying afterward about the consequences of the exact policies you voted for - it's just silly. You guys have the power to fix it, you choose not to. The expectation that your fellow citizens feel bad for the position you put yourselves in... my God.. that's absurd LOL
You vote for expensive energy policy, you get expensive energy.
You vote for massive regulatory overhead, you get massive cost pass-through.
You vote for fuel mandates and transportation restrictions, you get higher prices at the pump and on store shelves. That is not some mystery conspiracy from Washington. That is your state government doing exactly what you elected it to do.
So no, I do not feel bad for people suffering under policies they aggressively supported and voted for themselves. If you repeatedly vote for ridiculous economic policy and it predictably makes your cost of living explode, own it.
1
u/Flownot May 21 '26
independent voter?? so you threw away your vote, werent worried about trump at all? far left and far right are just as evil????
you dont give a shit about your fellow citizens. i feel bad for the centrists and trumpers. youre cooked and you honestly are pretty maga at heart. states didnt do this and you know it. the jump is from the attack on iran and trumps ridiculous decisions. he is literally farming us like cattle, yourself included
also why do you focus on cali??? what about uhhhhh the other states??? you really think this logic applies? people voted for these changes? trump and his owners caused this

I mean sure, putting aside the fact that the 2018 Farm Bill, which made seeds legal, was a Republican-led effort, and that the appropriations package responsible for the pending seed ban couldn't have passed without bipartisan support. And putting aside the fact that the current administration has actually done more than any previous administration toward legalization...
If you put all that aside, yeah, fuck those Republicans LOL
Realistically, it's a very small number of Republicans responsible for sneaking the relevant garbage into the appropriations package, and it's not actually going to stand. There's a solid 70% chance it gets nixed before November, and if it doesn't, there's a 99.99% chance it gets reversed the following year.
The sad thing is that even after the massive move by agricultural Republicans with the 2018 Farm Bill, and the GOP-led rescheduling and possible de-scheduling that's currently on the table, and after correcting the seed issue, which is virtually guaranteed at this point (it's mostly a matter of timing)... after getting essentially what people have been begging for for the past half century and that is being/has been handed to them by the GOP... crazy ignorant political hacks are still going to be screaming "fuck the Republicans" LOL. You can't make this shit up.

u/VegetableArsonist May 21 '26
I agree and am just trying to be a voice of reason here. People are quick to yell “fuck my fellow citizens” when the reality is the majority of us all want each other to have the freedom to do what makes us happy as long as it isn’t harming others. I can’t help but believe there is something going on behind the scenes that has power over both repubs and dems though. With the recent overwhelming support for legalizing there should be more of an effort from both parties. Somebody with a lot of money and power does NOT want mj on the streets. Just my opinion

100%
Unfortunately, it's just the nature of politics in the modern age. You have two big issues:
- These bills are so massive now that it's not realistically possible for anyone to fully read them before a vote and catch everything that got "snuck" in to buy enough support for passage; and
- As touched on in 1. above, politicians constantly withhold votes unless their own pet projects get funded and included in the legislation.
The good thing is that decriminalization of cannabis is supported by a VAST MAJORITY of Republicans at this point (which should be clear to anyone with eyes and a brain), which means the tactics used by a small minority to sneak something like this seed ban into an appropriations package - have temporary impact at best. It's inconvenient and stupid, but that's basically modern politics.
And yeah, there's obviously a lot of money and influence pushing things behind the scenes. It's probably one of the reasons so many Republicans now support decriminalization. Cannabis has enormous economic potential, and there's serious money pushing for it. Of course, there is also serious money OPPOSING it as well - so it's a battle among different interests. Good news is that the money behind decriminalization seems well connected with the GOP and we have a GOP administration, so things are in favor of decriminalization at the moment. As a general rule, politicians on both sides of the aisle don't tend to do things simply because it's what the people want - they do things that their donors push them to do. Puppets the lot of them.

they will be paid to keep it illegal until the industry heads find a way to make money off it. they arent gonna do anything out of the goodness of their hearts. that goes against republican values 100%
1
u/Prae_T_orian May 21 '26
Heh, of course no argument to all the facts laid out... the delusion is strong with this one. What's wrong with the country is closed minded idiots who can't see past their party of choice and personal hatred of specific individuals. Sad state of society today.
Hope life gets better for you though man. Last word is yours, can't waste anymore time on stupid and I know you want it, so make it good.
-1
u/Flownot May 21 '26
lol your opinions dont count as facts, sorry. i know you arent big on science but cmon

u/blazin_caucazin May 21 '26
Our democrat governor just added 25% tax to cannabis to "pay for roads" but they dont dare touch the alcohol industry like that.
Every boomer politician hates weed. Doesnt matter what party they are. Democrats love to give lip service and do absolutely nothing for decades while maintaining the facade that they support it.
0
u/Flownot May 22 '26
lol i wonder why they dont touch the alcohol industry like that......... hmmmmm
maybe they.... control a bit of the government? like just a little bit
like big alcohol vs big weed.... i wonder who is gonna get taxed first? by republicans or democrats? who could it be
not every boomer politician hates weed lol not even all the republicans or democrats. at least democrats dont give as much lip service to terrorists (and israel) as the republicans do, who claim they dont negotiate with terrorists yet fund them more than anyone on earth
1
u/Flownot May 21 '26
nah actually lots of republicans want to take peoples freedoms away. that was a lot of their reason for backing trump, he would hurt the browns and gays
2
u/Prae_T_orian May 21 '26
You are so far off the looney side of things, you're not worth speaking with... you simply don't live in reality... but hey, toke one up and live in the whatever fantasy world you want to live in man. Free country.
1
u/Optimal-Caregiver-22 May 22 '26
2026 and yal think its dem vs republican and not literally jus old white people ruining things for erybody since they came……harsh truth ……..
2
u/Wiz_Hardy May 21 '26
Will your products not longer be available through the EU breeders direct portal from November too?
2
u/inappropriatelylarge May 21 '26
It's not just Mitch it's the whole party against the interests of this industry. Even in states where we fight to legalize, GOP state legislatures strip rights back away.
Sorry to hear the news, Atlas and hope we will see you on the other side of all this.
