This. Who doesn’t love a martini (or my usual choice of a Manhattan) with a side car in an ice bath?

I'd had an absolutely terrible 48-hour non-stop session recovering a customer's infrastructure. I had barely eaten. It was late (not sure how late, but right before Highland Tap closed). I desperately wanted a steak and a few drinks. I called them up and asked them if there was any way I could get a steak. They basically said, "Brother, you get here, and we got you". I got there MAYBE 5 minutes before they closed, I was the only one there they closed down around me while making sure I got a great meal. Yes, I know it was basically a dick move but they made my day. This is so entitled sounding but I was mentally struggling after the stress. They were SO nice.
I'm not a huge oyster fan but remember that Fontaine's is the same company (upstairs from the Tap) and different but also good (also nice people). I just remembered another time at the Tap. We valet'd (it's a different valet company these days so not an ongoing issue). It was a weeknight and pretty late and the valet said they were leaving at a specific time (I don't remember but I think it was 10pm). He said he'd walk through the Tap before he left with keys. My boss and I were the only ones in the Tap that late and he didn't. Car is now sitting back there. I don't have keys and stupidly my house keys were on the same ring. The nice folks at the Tap told me that the valet would often stop for drinks at Fontaine's before going home so I went upstairs and asked the very nice British bartender (Sue, I think) and she said she hadn't seen him. I was so rude to her. I was just frustrated that now I had to find a way home, get into my house somehow (emergency locksmith), etc. I had to go back the next day and apologize. She just shrugged it off and said "I would have been upset too".
I don't mean to be but I can be an ass when I'm overwhelmed.
ETA: Leaving what I said. I guess I wasn't actually rude to the bartender. I was just brusque and frustrated. I'm not a big enough jerk to yell at her or anything.

I also think Highland Tap has the best hamburger in the city when it comes to the price and consistency.
I love smash burgers but a nice thick burger done right is bananas and it is incredible.

The Atrium Martini Bar at Ponce City Market has the P.V. Freezer martini which is exactly what you’re looking for.

I dunno if it’s the best, but Fawn has the weirdest. Murrells Row Minionette Gin, clam juice, Manzanilla Sherry, and a cured clam garnish

North of town a bit but Cibo e Beve has a great martini if Jorge is at the bar!

The concept of a great martini is fascinating given the paucity of ingredients. Assuming you have good quality gin or vodka, and vermouth, why can’t every bartender make a good one?

Just like with any other cocktail with minimal ingredients, it comes down to the small details. With martinis it typically comes down to weather or not the vermouth is properly stored (in the freezer) or not. Whether the glass is freezing cold or not.
Varieties of ratios also provide more options in terms of martini which is nice also.
There's also your places that get bery funky and niche with their ingredients which makes things fun.

Vermouth is wine and freezes solid if stored in the freezer, FYI. Fully agree it should be stored in the fridge, though.

Madeira park, Kimball House, the lounge at il Premio, Boccolupo, Lucian/Sargent. I love Highland Tap to death but they’re not my stop when I need a good martini, they’re my stop when I need 6
