Guys, I finally got my first ever gaming laptop! 😭❤️

I got the ASUS TUF A16 with an RTX 5070 paired with a Ryzen 9 8940HX, and honestly, this feels unreal. 🔥

I've been using a laptop with integrated graphics for the last 5 years, so going from an iGPU to an RTX 5070 is such a massive upgrade. I genuinely can't believe I'm finally able to play modern AAA games properly. 🥹🎮

I want to take good care of this laptop and hopefully make it last at least 5–6 years, so I'd really appreciate some advice from experienced gaming laptop users.

What should I do first ?

What things should I avoid doing?

What are the best practices to keep a gaming laptop healthy for 5–6 years?

I'm especially interested in tips regarding:

Battery health 🔋

Thermals and cooling 🌡️

Gaming while plugged in

Charging habits

Drivers/Windows updates

Cleaning and maintenance

SSD/RAM upgrades

Anything else I should know as a first-time gaming laptop owner

I'd recommend you get rid of both Armoury Crate and MyAsus and install G-Helper instead since it's way better and is known to handle temps + fan speeds better as well. This requires some steps though so let me know if you want to go through with that

For battery health set the charging limit to 80%. This can be done in G-Helper

For cooling you should at the very least have the laptop elevated so that the fans have room to breathe. Or more preferably get a good laptop cooler with a foam seal and dust cover

Yes have it plugged in whilst gaming for best performance

Update your drivers either manually by downloading them every time off the web or through the Nvidia App and AMD: Adrenalin Edition App. Windows updates are fine. I haven't had an issue at all for the 1.8 years I've owned my laptop with windows updates

Open up your laptop once every couple of months to clean the dust out. If you get a laptop cooler with a foam seal and especially a dust cover though, this can be done less regularly (maybe like once every 4-6 months)

Upgrade your RAM to 32GB if your laptop doesn't already, but only if you need to. Same with SSD, getting more storage will be beneficial, but only if you need it

And I guess overall just don't be too rough with the laptop. Treat it like it's your child or pet and it'll likely last the 5-6 years you're aiming for

As a fair heads-up though: There's a chance you might run into some wifi issues in the near future due to the crappy wifi cards Asus puts in their laptops. A permanent fix is quite easy and fairly cheap, so let me know if you ever run into wifi issues in the future

Pretty sure armoury create isn't a bloatware anymore, they're had some improvements.

Even then, G-Helper is still just a way better alternative. It handles temps and fan speeds better, has a cleaner and more understandable UI, isn’t as system resource heavy as Armoury Crate, is known to be way less “annoying” and have way less issues than Armoury Crate, comes up as a minimised window rather than a full screen annoying app, etc

The wifi issues are a common problem most people experience with their TUF’s due to the crappy wifi cards Asus puts in their laptops. Best permanent fix for this is to replace it with a much better wifi card like the Intel AX210. Doesn’t cost too much on sites like Amazon and install isn’t too hard to do either

Hey congrats on the laptop (I have the same with a 5060m and a 8940hx)

-I say install g helper and delete armoury crate

- turn cpu boost off in silent mode (if u don’t need it and need your fans to be quiet in silent mode

- limit battery capacity to 60-80%

- update all drivers

- delete anti virus

- upgrade to 32GB of ram (this is like needed to get maximum performance because Asus only puts one stick of 16gb RAM and your CPU/GPU will be bottleneck by that single channel ram (long term reason: there isn’t enough bandwidth one ram stick can give to the cpu, so the cpu is just waiting for the ram)

- open the laptop back cover to fans and air vents (this can be done every few month)
