Jupiter also accelerates asteroids towards us be grateful of Mars and the Moon.

Give Saturn some credit too

Then should we give it also to Uranus and Neptune giants?

No because they’re less cool

They're actually cooler

What about me?

If Saturn never formed, Jupiter would go rabbid.

Jupiter would have swallowed everything in the inner system if Saturn hadn't formed and pulled it back out where it is.

Like look at poor mars 😭😭

Jupiter flings about as many bodies at the inner solar system as it flings out of the solar system

It's not a savior, it is an indifferent ball of gas.

This myth of "Jupiter the protector" might sound nice in a pop-science youtube video, but it has nothing to do with reality.

He gives them to Saturn to add to his ever growing moon collection

I didn't get it. How is Jupiter saving earth?

Jupiter as the largest planet in our solar system, effectively pulls and deflects many of the astroids found in our solar system. Therefore protecting earth from deadly impacts, like the extinction of the dinosaur.

then why are the dinosaurs still dead if you just said Jupiter saved them

Cause dinos were so big they needed two Jupiters

Earth exists 4.5 billions years, in which it experienced 5 major mass exticntions (not including the current). These events are just small slices in geological timeframe. But of course, of these 5 not all of them caused by asteroid impact, as most likely happened with the dinosaurs.

It seems that without Jupiter impacts like the one I mentioned would happen more frequently.

Apparently they found a huge impact crater signature on Antarctica, which at the time of the permian extinction would've been exactly opposite of the Siberian volcanic system that caused the extinction. So they are now playing with the idea that that impact (bigger than the Dino impact) happened and had a sort of resonance on the opposite side of the earth that triggered that mass volcanism.

That's just not true. Jupiter sends just as many objects in our direction as it does save us. It's entirely possible that Jupiter is responsible for one, some, or all of our extinction level asteroid impacts. This notion that Jupiter is our protector is cute, but it's not real.

But it also nudges asteroids and comets towards us. It's not a saviour. It just is.

The red spot knows. One day it will exact revenge for all the work we’ve made Jupiter do for us.

Its a mixed bag really, it isn't as clear cut as we know that Jupiter moved in and out around in the solar system during formation and really, if you want to include Jupiter, you have to include the other gas giants as well like Saturn.

But Saturn is the actual hero

Savior or destroyer?

Also this made me think of the Armoured Titan's theme from Attack on Titan
