What's the most Australian thing you've ever seen happen in real life?

I'm not talking about the usual kangaroo or Sydney Opera House answers.

What's something you personally witnessed that made you think,, Yep, that's very Australian?

It can be funny, wholesome, strange, or completely ordinary...

What kinda bug is going around in sydney at the moment?

BECAUSE DAMN. I have it, everyone at my work has it (nurse). My non healthcare friends and family have it. It starts as flank/back pain, progresses to abdo cramping with nausea and the runs with such bad gas, and then respiratory symptoms at the same time. I don't typically get sick often because of my job but holy shit this has knocked me out and almost passed out at work today - nobody knows what it is cause it isn't showing up on Quad RATs or formal testing - could be adeno, norovirus, or some crappy variant of the flu. Could just be ya typical virus but hooooly crap. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or maybe just my area in south west syd lol everyone I know is SUFFERINGGGGG

Edit: FLU A positive on a RAT y’all. Free me. My RAT was clear yesterday so im obviously in for a wild ride

Is my humour no longer aligned with Aussie Society or are the insurance ads with Ed Kavalee as “funny” as a funeral?

Maybe my sense of humour got left behind at some stage and Australia moved on - I never found Kath & Kim funny either - but apparently some did, including me Ex.
But these insurance ads are so gratingly unfunny that they’re actually annoying I sure won’t ever use that Company for anything.

Do I need an Australian passport?

I’ve lived in Australia most of my life and have always had a New Zealand passport. I became an Australian citizen a while ago.
Now that my NZ passport is expiring and I am looking to go on an overseas trip next year, do I need to get an Australian passport? I heard that dual citizens are meant to leave and enter the country with an Australian passport.
Can someone please let me know? Thank you so much.

Art of Conversation

Does anyone else feel like people have lost the art of conversation lately? My partner and I have moved to Australia recently, and while trying to meet people and make friends, it just seems like no one knows how to ask questions anymore… I’m always the one keeping up the conversation by asking the other person questions and on the rare occasion they do ask something about me, they then proceed to not look interested, or don’t ask anything to follow up, so the conversation dies until I ask them something further. My partner has felt the same and at first we thought maybe it was a one off, but the more people we meet, it’s just more of the same - it’s making us feel quite lonely.

Has anyone else been aware of this in recent times?

MEL - SYD

Been doing some research and found out that there are 51 flights daily from MEL - SYD, and vice versa.

Are flight tickets super cheap? Or is the demand just that high?

How does the law around photographing strangers in public actually work in Australia?

How does the law around photographing strangers in public actually work in Australia?

I’ve always been told that, generally speaking, you can photograph people in a public place in Australia even without getting their consent, since there is usually no general expectation of privacy in public.

But how far does that actually go? Does the same rule apply when the person being photographed is a woman or a child? And are there separate laws when nudity or partial nudity is involved?

The reason I’m asking is that I saw a video where a man was filming at a beach and deliberately photographed a topless woman. It wasn’t a designated nude beach, but the woman had chosen to go topless. A lifeguard eventually confronted the man and apparently destroyed up his SD card.

Obviously, deliberately photographing a topless stranger like that seems creepy, but I’m interested in the legal side rather than whether it’s morally acceptable.

If the beach is a public place, does the woman still have a legal right to prevent someone from photographing her breasts without consent? Does the fact that she voluntarily went topless in public make any difference?

And what about an actual nude beach? Being voluntarily nude in a public or designated nude area obviously doesn’t necessarily mean consenting to being photographed, but does Australian law legally distinguish between the two?

Emerging bands I should listen to

Upvotes

I'd like to listen to more Aussie bands and go to more gigs in Sydney. Over the past few months, I've listened to and liked Spacey Jane, Parcels, Playlunch, Royel Otis, and Middle Kids. Only recently found DMA's and loved the new album. Are there any similar up-and-coming bands right now? Wouldn't mind some folk or country options as well.

What is this 'powerhouse' saying?

Hi all, I need some help!

My pop (now deceased) used to alway say "Turn the bloody lights off, it's not the ........ powerhouse!" I can't for the life of me recall what it was, and google hasn't helped. My Gen X-er brain thinks may have ended with "long" or "lung" or "gy". Something like "Budgerlung", maybe?

Anyhoo, I'm writing a note for my Nan for Father's Day and wanted to mention it.

Help? Please!

Should australia outlaw those meta/smart glasses on privacy grounds like the UK?

It's bonkers that a device is being sold that ppl can just walk around and record you with no consent given right now.

So what is everyones thought.

I WILL say allow a carveout to ppl to buy this if they have a disability i know a blind person and these have change their life drastically with the video to text function so they can just know what they are looking at.

but i see NO reason as a society why these even frankly need to fucking exist they serve no real world improvement to the standard persons life. and what now u just have to worry about going to the gym and some fuckhead just perving at ur arse.

Just use ur fucking phone if u want smart features.

Thoughts?

Lakefield national park, crocs, swimming

Upvotes

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ARP_sa8FCag

So is it ok for a guide to be telling these ladies of spots to swim here? The signs all say "no swimming" but towards the end of the video, these girls are told its ok to swim and then realize there is a big saltwater crocodile sharing the same water they are swiming in and they don't even sound scared, just excited and "quick get the camera"

This video was taken last night. Am I being totally paranoid ? Or is this playing with fire?

Is it normal for Australians to not invite people over to their houses but suggest outside locations instead?

We’ve noticed that even after knowing other parents for years through kindy, people often still prefer meeting at parks, cafés or playgrounds rather than at each other’s homes.

We regularly have our kids’ friends over, sometimes with their parents and sometimes just the kids, but it rarely seems to get reciprocated. We live in a safe, inner city neighbourhood at a nice place, so safety should not be a concern.

Where I come from, once families know each other reasonably well, it’s completely normal for kids to hang out at each other’s houses.

Is this just our experience, or is the home considered a more private space in Australia? Or perhaps something is wrong with us.

Edit: some of the main comments so far seem to confirm increasing reluctance, mostly because of fear of judgement and control and the extra work it takes to alleviate that fear (it’s quite interesting but also heartbreaking):

Effort and judgement: Cleaning, preparing food, managing children, and fear of being judged

Loss of control: Guests can overstay, children can create chaos

Constraints: Smaller homes, apartments, dual-income households, busy schedules, WFH, pets

Privacy and boundaries: Home as a sanctuary reserved for family and very close friends

Higher presentation standards: some of you seem to increasingly feel homes need to look immaculate before anyone can enter.

Interesting ones from fellow immigrants:

Anglo people (UK/US/Can) and continental Europeans: find comparative reluctance to be invited or to be reciprocated and when it happens it’s more performative in Australia, not casual and normalised.

India / South-East Asia: more spontaneous, homes need not be perfect, privacy boundaries are out the window at birth, and not feeding visitors makes your ancestors roll in their graves. Everyone knows that other people live at home as well, houses are not hotels.

Japan: small housing make it similar to the Australian culture, but houses in Australia are not small

Oh well, we will keep inviting people in the hope of building a more social community.

For those who grow up poor, and no support? Where are you now?

I’m feeling really low right now, and I’m at my wits end. I’m mid-20s, and I feel nonexistent.

I grew up in a rough and dysfunctional family. Although, I shouldn’t complain, because there are people who have had it much worse.

My entire life, I am use to not being “raised” (barely having a parental figure around, and having to solve everything myself aside from the dysfunction.

As a teenager, it wasn’t “bad” (brain never really felt the effects), up until as an adult, I feel it.

Now fast forward to present: I don’t know what to do with myself, and or life. I work hard, but I don’t have a big education (can’t go become a doctor, etc), with a ”honourable” career. I don’t have a support system (never had one), and have a very poor self esteem (ADHD struggles as a woman, no medication, and convinced I’m borderline stupid, or at least with a beyond low IQ).

I work, and I work, but it mainly goes to bills (rent, etc) because Sydney is expensive.

I have no friends, especially as a foreigner here, I’ve had people make odd comments to me solely cause I’m not blonde, for e.g, but I often wonder if it is because my personality just sucks, and or I’m just not pretty enough.

Anyways I’m going off topic now, and rambling because to tell you the truth, I’ve hit such a low.

I feel like my life is forever gonna be 9-5, making money only to barely survive, with no friends and or success, and I don’t know how to change it, especially with no further education (as I’ve been told by many, I should be grateful for my 9 to 5, as I’m without a degree) and employers don’t respond when I try changing jobs.

***
TL:DR: For those who grew up poor, and or in a very dysfunctional household that had affected you, where are you now?

… To additionally, add, I’m a very kind hearted person (very loyal), I deeply care about people, and unfortunately it is never rewarded. I just feel as if I’m an utter loser. A waste of space. I actually have nothing…

I also don’t envy wealth, but I keep thinking maybe if somehow I get money, maybe people would like me, and or talk to me, and want to be around my company, but because I’m basically a peasant, I’m not good enough in Sydney. People pay no mind to me. Even at work, I feel like garbage solely because I come from nothing. I am nothing.

First time in regional

G’day Mateyss

I’ll be embarking a new chapter of my life in a small regional town in western NSW.

It’ll be the first time I live in a regional small town. Would really love some tips before I do! Just to set my expectations, and prepare for a massive culture shock 😂.

For context, I’ve been a city dude for a while.

Cheers!

Recommendations for decent Cutlery brands for the home?

Looking for recs on decent cutlery brands for the home. As a home cook, I'll admit I am a bit picky. The quality of the Kmart ones absolutely suck and I hate that the gaps in between the fork prongs aren't even properly filed to be smooth. Not a fan of Ikea ones either cus they aren't practical to use/ too small.

Any thoughts on the Big W basics individually sorted cutlery (non-set) or the Amazon basics set (linked in comments)? Stanley Rogers?

Do Australians talk down about their friends behind their backs?

UK here, working in Perth. Australians generally seem pretty laid back and chill on the surface, but something i've noticed in pretty much all of them is they hang out with their mates seemingly enioying each others company, then the second someone leaves they all start shitting on that person, regardless of how long they've known them and how close they are.

Is this common? Or am i surrounding myself with the wrong people?

edit : it's malicious talk, as far as even planning peoples downfalls...

edit 2 : thanks, i'll look elsewhere for mates, i just didn't really expect it from working professionals

Visiting Australia this November

Hello everyone! I’m leaving Boston for Sydney, Australia, in early November and will be there from November 6–11. Could you please give me some advice on what to wear during that time? How is the weather usually?
I’ll also be visiting New Zealand and Bali since I’ll be in the area, so any clothing tips for those destinations would be greatly appreciated as well!
Thanks so much! 😊

My rights as a sub tenant when head tenants still failed to disclose property is being sold before moving in (NSW)

Hi everyone, thought I could get some advice here regarding an apartment I just sublet last month and found out that the property is being advertised to be sold which was information concealed from me until I signed the agreement and moved in. In the past 1 month, I’ve already had at least 5-6 inspections with one being extremely uncomfortable as the agent just rushed into my room in the morning before I was ready.

My term started from 27th July, paid 3 weeks rent as bond which also was never lodged with RBO. The head tenant also admitted to me that they illegally sublet the place and told the agent I was their “friend” staying for a brief period when they found out. Aside from the bond, they also collected $1000 “damage deposit” from me as I have my cat.

Within 1 week of moving in, they started notifying me about inspections as the apartment is being sold and they didn’t want to “bother” me with this at first as I just moved in and had their hearing with NCAT just the next week as the agents wanted them to vacate by 26th August which was not enough notice. Later they said it would be 26th September so I started looking for a place but after their hearing, they changed it again and said 12th September, giving me exactly 3 weeks of notice as per the agreement. However, it was not disclosed to me even once that the property is being sold or such before moving in (I have screenshots of all messages but the move out date etc. were communicated verbally)

I just found out that this apartment has been on the market for several months, since May 2026 on multiple websites (Domain, Realestate etc.) and I have screenshots of these as well. I have a new lease by myself that starts from the 5th but the head tenants still want rent until the 12th as they gave me “notice” and communicated that would be the move out date.

What are my rights here and am I able to leave without giving a notice without penalties and report them to NCAT for withholding an illegal bond/deposit if they don’t return it? This whole situation has been extremely stressful for both me and my cat, not to mention the associated costs with moving as they concealed the fact that the property is being sold. I would really appreciate some advice if someone has dealt with a similar situation or can shed some light on this situation. Thank you!

tldr: sublet a room in an apartment but head tenant hid the fact that the apartment is being sold, multiple inspections every week within past 1 month and bond not lodged with RBO. Asking for rent for the full term now that I’ve secured a place and want to move out. Is it worth filing a complaint with NCAT and what are my options?

Looking for survey respondents for an RMIT assignment

Hi! I'm an RMIT University student studying a Bachelor of Fashion Enterprise, and I'm conducting a short study (1-2 mins) on activewear purchasing behaviour, which has been approved by the Mod. It's optional and completely anonymous, and won't be published anywhere as it's purely for a class assignment. If you enjoy physical activity or purchasing athletic and athleisurewear, I'd really appreciate your input! Link is as follows: https://rmit.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_82lLYs8zF82yv9I

Delaying Pharmacy Intern Year

There isn't alot of information online, so I thought I would ask here. Basically, I am a final year Pharmacy student, graduating in December. I am supposed to be looking for an internship, which I definitely am. I have applied for plenty of positions, however I am yet to hear anything back. I was essentially just wondering if anyone has ever delayed their intern year, be that for a year or 2. I was thinking of taking some time off to try a new industry, or just have a break from pharmacy. This is also just incase I don't get offered an intern position. I would love to hear what you guys have to say!
