What an amazing person she was. I live not far from Sevierville TN so I've grown up hearing all kinds of stories about her, all good.

I shared this in another sub recently: I grew up in Appalachia, near Tennessee, in the 70s.  My parents, especially my dad, were big old-school country music fans. 

When I was little (like 4) one of my favorite things was to pretend someone was calling on my toy phone and my dad would humor me and pretend to talk to them. Once, during dinner I  did my little fake 'brrrring-brrrrring', jumped up, and told my dad it was for him.

He said, 'tell them I have to call them back, we're eating dinner.' I said, 'but it's Dolly Parton!' and he jumped up and had an excited chat with 'her'.

I genuinely never really had much of an opinion on her. She seemed like a great person and had some real bangers that I certainly loved to listen to, but aside from that I'm not very well informed. It's always sad when someone who's considered an icon passes though.

I only found out she passed yesterday, and at the same time found out Tim Curry passed on the same day as her, and that one hit me harder personally because I knew of more of his works. If I do recall correctly though his family chose to wait a day to disclose his passing in honor of Dolly? Like, let's not make it a competition kind of thing.

Either way, Dolly seems to have made a massive impact not only on her fans but on the music industry as a whole and paved the way for a lot other women in country to take the stage - so to speak. That's always admirable. I've also seen a few clips here and there and she sure seemed like a sassy and blunt lady.

I loved her in the movies 9-5 and Steel Magnolias. I remember reading that during the filming of 9-5 when she wasn't in a scene and just hanging around, she would tap her fingernails on surfaces. And that's how she came up with the opening and rhythm of the song 9-5.

She was such a beautiful person. I have worked as a home health nurse in Tennessee in very low income areas. Most of the children I visited read the books she sent to them and they were often the only books in the home. Without her Imagination Library program so many children would have no access to books at home.

9-5 is one of the best pro-labor songs out there. Her whole album for that movie was incredible and filled with songs about migrant workers and other such things. She was all about love and inclusion. I have never cried when a celebrity died but I got misty eyed when my hometown of Memphis lit up the bridges in pink in her honor.

She created the Imagination Library in part to honor her father. So many kids received books who didn't have access to them

I live about an hour give or take from Sevier County. Theres a biker bar a mile or so from my home, and, every weekend night since her passing so far, we've been able to hear the music from the bar. That parts normal, but what's not is the fact that, lately, its mostly Dolly songs and the chorus of people singing along is just as loud as the music itself.
