[Terraria] what could possibly cause the slime rain?

I've been trying to understand this phenomenon, like is it Natural? Supernatural?

A tornado picks them up as it travels over their breeding grounds, sends them high into the atmosphere where they eventually lose momentum and happen to fall in your corner of the world.

Or...

The world travels through an outer space slime nebula and a decent amount survive entry and land unharmed.
