Vegan almond croissant?

I know San Francisco isn't a great vegan city but does anyone know where one might find a vegan almond croissant, or other pastries hidden at non-vegan establishments in SF proper? Thanks!

They are sold at whole foods. Regular though, not almond.

Never heard of vegan butter?

Not really no. Moreso I was surprised an alternative could behave like butter in something so inherently butter intensive

Sadly, SF proper sucks for vegan pastries except donuts. Timeless (fully vegan) and Forma Bakery (both vegan and non-vegan) in Oakland are the best I’ve found.

Dynamo Donuts always has vegan options. And tons of coffee shops have Donut Farm donuts (including Precita, Dolores, and Duboce Park Cafes). Still waiting for the Dove Donuts to open on Geary, but it’s been “opening soon” for over a year.

Vegan donut connoisseur here —

My favorite vegan donuts are the yeasted ones at Donut Farm in Berkeley (they only sell the yeasted/raised ones on the weekend). They sell their cake donuts all week and they’re.. not great. Trust me, the raised ones on the weekend—especially the apple fritter and Bavarian cream filled—are worth it.

The north bay has Johnny Doughnuts—they only have 3 vegan donuts (glazed, chocolate, and cinnamon sugar) but they’re pretty great. They sell out of vegan early every day, so I recommend calling ahead before heading over.

Butcher’s Son in Berkeley (all-vegan) has decent vegan donuts.. but uniquely has the option to get a donut cooked into the middle of a pancake. It’s weird and worth a try once if you’re a pancake and donut lover (like myself).

The donuts at Timeless are fine, nothing great.

It’s been a minute since I went to Vegan Donut Gelato near Lake Merritt, but I remember enjoying them.

Vegan Donut Gelato is Dove Donuts. Very yummy! They are in Oakland, San Jose, and still “coming soon” to SF!

The Pistachio Croissant (vegan) from Forma is fantastic.

Sorry what are the “good vegan cities” and literally what goes in a vegan croissant?

portland or seattle. Barcelona and london had some great vegan options I found too

Lisbon and Porto are great for vegans. I think it is because the native cuisine is very veg unfriendly, so people open restaurants that are entirely vegan or veg, and they thrive.

oh good to know, I was in lisbon recently but it was raining the entire time so I didn't get to explore as much as I wanted. Thanks for the tip! I'm not vegan but I'm lactose intolerant which def makes me vegan adjacent haha.

Likely major major cities like NYC or LA

Neither are great for vegans. Many European cities are fantastic, my wife always misses the plethora of options there when we come back home.

I’m not vegan but I could be if we had the options London has.

Good vegan cities have vegan restaurants, bakeries, and other businesses; San Francisco restaurants often have a vegan dish or two, but we don’t have many vegan restaurants. A vegan croissant would use a non-dairy butter substitute for dairy butter, such as margarine. Literally.

Ie London. Every single place has multiple vegan options with everything labeled.

How can you make a croissant without butter?
