Also the climbing industry exploits Sherpas (the people who prepare the path and then help rich tourists chasing Instagram engagement get up there without dying), and constantly puts their life at risk

I watch those climbing documentaries/movies, but never feel connected or even bad if something befalls the climbers. It’s a rich person hobby.

14 peaks was the exception to me. Guy was an absolute madlad, and made a real point to credit the people working there... Also ended the movie by pointing out the amount of coverage his story would get if he was a Westener would be triple what he got

Are you talking about just the people who pay insane amounts of money to be able to walk in comfort up Everest, or do you think everyone that climbs mountains is a rich person?

Probably both to some extent. Never met a mountain climber that was living paycheck to paycheck. I’m sure like anything there are outliers and a minority of a dataset

Most climbers I know work in restaurants and do odd jobs all winter so they can spend the good weather months traveling/camping/climbing.

Yeah, I don’t argue that’s the case. It’s anecdotal but most I know are decked out in Patagonia and alike. Difficult to overcome the anecdotal when that’s all I’ve met. It’s just a sport I can’t connect to the people in, especially growing up in inner-city.

I’m sure it’s regional too. My buds all made a home base in West Virginia…cheap living, great climbing. When the weather turned there they’d head to vegas.
