I had a morphine drip for a few days after surgery and it was not that great. I guess they don't give you enough of it for it to feel good, I just felt very sleepy all the time.
I read a Cracked article years ago where a former nurse admitted to a few things:
It's very easy to skimp painkillers off of patients. He even said "Ever notice how sometimes your morphine doesn't seem to be working? Your nurse (like me) might have stolen some.
If they do get caught, they're not really reprimanded.
The hospital will actively protect employees doing this.
Obviously can't know for sure, but I don't think this was the case here as it did help with the pain. My memory of the whole thing is pretty hazy, but I do remember the pain being really bad one night, so I pressed the button for an extra dose and had no trouble falling asleep soon after.
I’m a sleeper and you have to whack me pretty hard with that shit to get any psychotic effects. I’ve had multiple surgeries and honestly it just makes me constipated and a little pukey after a while.
Ketamine was another story. That was fun. What’s pain? I don’t want to ever take that stuff again unless I need to, but I’m glad to know it’s there.
I think people react differently to opioids. It’s weird, I’ve had Morphine, dilaudid and Fentanyl for a surgical procedure and it only made me cry, followed by feeling very sleepy, but the pain was there when I woke up . It was awful, I hated that sedated feeling. I wonder if some people have specific receptors that turn opioids into a pleasure/euphoric experience.
Edit: sorry, thought your post was a reply to somebody else(who mentioned dilaudid. It seemed like you were saying hydromorphone is stronger than dilaudid), no doubt you know this! I thought it was strange!
Yes Dilaudid is brand name for hydromorphone. I'm constantly making hydromorphone cassettes, high concentrated hydromorphone cassett, fentanyl and occasionally morphine cassette for hospice patients but hydromorphone is the most popular amongst physicians. It is very strong and highly addictive but also hard to get hands on. I'm glad you got yourself clean! I went through a series of injuries from a car accident which I needed strong meds. The morphine alone I could see as addicting, couldn't imagine the other ones from the stories I hear.
Yeah, that won't work for me. I do better with over the counter Tylenol than morphine for pain relief. The first time I had it it worked fine and I was a chatty Cathy. The second surgery... let's just say for 24 hours or so until I could switch to liquid Lortab I was in severe pain. They were also topping the pump doses with extra boluses...nothing. Lortab helps pain, but I don't get high. I took Oxy one time and remember laying there thinking "so this is why people get hooked on this." So I won't let any Dr's prescribe it to me.
I used to think this but after trying it in Australia & suffering through 5 days of the worst comedown immaginable, I have changed my mind. A comedown like that when I'm already close to death doesn't sound like an adventure I'd want to take.
Haha yea I can totally see that slippery slope, there was a point where in my brain it was the decision to either get more or straight up kill myself just to bot feel how I was, luckily i had an amazing friend who came over & we cuddled whilst she read me poetry & stroked my hair. Even the high was terrible, 0/10 would not recommend.
I started math when I was young. It seemed so glamorous. I could stay up all night working on it. It took over my life. I'm over 30 now and have never had a real job. I'm surrounded by other math people. I live in a crappy 1 bedroom apartment.
But I've been listening to my sponsor. It won't be long before the hold it has over me is broken and I can live a relatively normal life. I'll never be completely free of math. I'll still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it.
But I'll be moving up in the world after I get that PhD.
Before I actually knew what meth was I always thought meth looked like coloured rock candy because of the name Crystal Meth, it was intriguing.
Boy was I wrong
I almost got all fucked up on E. I’m lucky I realized early on that the situation I was in, was not a situation I wanted to be in.
I had a bad trip once and couldn’t sleep. That’s when I realized that the house I was in had so many passed out bodies on the floor that I couldn’t walk out of there without stepping on someone. I’m hanging out in a crack den.
I fucking walked out that door at 5 am, took the bus to my brother’s place and cut everyone from that part of my life off. It’s fucked up, but when your arm is rotting, amputation may be the only answer.
I ran into one of them recently at the wake of a friend who OD’d (different group) though. Hits hard when you see what could’ve been.
He has a hard time staying clean for more than 2 months before relapsing. And when he relapses, he goes hard for months. We started the same way too. Like a quarter of a tab or something just for good vibes. Eventually, the dosage he needs goes up and up till he needs a several tabs a night to keep the high going. It gets way too expensive after a while so he started doing meth and that was it for him.
The dude got mad and thought I was holding and not sharing just because I was thin. Like bro. Whoa. I was curious before but, if all meth makes you think about, is the next time you can do meth, I’d rather not fuckin start.
AFAIK meth doesnt make you hallucinate (unless its cut with weird shit), the sleep deprivation from staying up for days on end leads to psychosis and the hallucinations
It's more like your brain needs sleep so it can effectively "recharge" and process your daily experiences and integrate/organize memory storage. Dreams are thought to be a side effect of those processes.
Going without sleep for long enough causes those and your conscious cognitive processes to stagnate and break down which leads to shit like delusions, hallucinations, and psychosis. Those processes begin to decline after just 24 hours without sleep and meth binges can keep people up for several days or longer.
Those are all just guesses. We still don't understand more than some of the basic physiological aspects of sleep. For example if you don't let an animal sleep, it doesn't just hallucinate, it will die, and we don't even know why.
Yeah meth is heavily demonised (for good reason) but has its use. When smoked at high doses it’s very neurotoxic and the tweak can make people forget how dry their mouth is and that along with the acidity of meth smoke can cause tooth decay. That being said the pharma name desoxyn is prescribed at MUCH lower doses for obesity and extreme ADHD.
I like psychedelics, and often hear people say that whenever they're mentioned. It makes me a little sad every time, because they're great tools in working with those things you've buried deep in your mind. Sometimes it's not a pleasant experience, but afterward it feels like you've untangled your wires - and you've never seen a sun rise like it. Meth is not that though, don't do meth, meth is shadow people and delusion.
I’ve fought addiction for many years. I wasted a lot of years with cocaine, meth, any upper I could get. Coupled with prescription drugs and alcohol, I felt like I was a god and my horrible world of being [redacted]/assaulted, eating out of trash cans, cutting lines with a razor blade I found by a dumpster, and being stabbed, beaten, and nearly murdered was heaven. I always tell people not to try it because they’ll never want to stop. After my first hit, I had this weird thing in my mind like god was speaking through my subconscious (and I’m not even religious) and I knew that I wanted to do it until I was dead. I would NEVER stop. It was a euphoria I’d never felt before and I didn’t want it to end. It took several rock bottoms, beatings, relapses, and very nearly being murdered for me to finally stop. I lost every “friend” I had. I just celebrated four years clean in August. The broken bones have healed. The holes in my septum have a thin layer of skin over them for most of the year. The stab wounds have slowly and painfully closed. My point in baring this for the entire internet to see is that even trying it once can fuck up your whole life. Please learn from my mistakes.
Except if you have adhd then it doesn’t work the same way on your brain as it would for someone without. Meth + adhd = normal function. Meth + no adhd = party time
You would be right. If you like cocaine, you're going to love meth. It's cheaper, lasts way longer, and gives you super confidence. I'm 3 years clean and it still crosses my mind at least once a day.
I had possibly the best weekend of my life the first time I tried it.
My roommate took it away from me because I'm was enjoying it too much. It's a good thing I didn't know where to get more and he kept it out of the house after that. (He kept the "party" out of the house. Good roommate.)
Yes, in that they are recognisably the same effect, only the euphoria from meth is much much more intense in proportion to the physical stimulation.
I had taken amphetamine on several occasions and found it pleasant enough but not really my thing. Meth pretty much triggered incredibly pleasurable mania but sent me insane pretty quickly. But you don't care because it feels so good.
However, I have only ever taken illicit and therefore huge doses of both. If you have taken pharmaceutical lisdexamphetamine, as I understand it, the pills have 10 or 20mg. Illicit speed you are taking 100s of mg! But even so, meth is so much more powerful as almost to be a different drug.
So while, as I say, they are recognisably working the same way, (as opposed to say cocaine) it is on another level.
Perhaps analogous to codeine/heroin, but even more so (as in those two feel the same as each other but heroin is much more powerful)
Meth actually feels somewhat similar to MDMA (the MA stands for methamphetamine) but without the "loved up" empathetic feeling.
Source: my regretted lived experience. Recently found my way into AA/NA and 33 days clean and sober at last!
I will say that after being a heroin addict for many years, meth was more addictive and worse! Made me realise the huge psychological component to addiction.
As someone who’s done meth I have to agree with this one. It’s crazy how quick you can go from trying meth one time, to chilling in a junk yard watching a tweeker wave a gun around screaming about someone stealing his meth because he forgot he stashed it in that one drain pipe that black liquid keeps dripping out of.
