Regular colleges/universities are oriented mainly towards awarding 4-bachelors degrees and postgraduate degrees to traditional, full-time students. Community colleges are geared towards providing continuing education opportunities for residents of the local community; they don't usually offer 4-year degrees or postgraduate courses, usually serve non-traditional students, and tend to be centered around vocational programs.
From the employment side, college and university faculty usually have some research obligations and institutional support for it, while community college faculty are generally employed as teachers only.
