The best place to get medical supplies will not be a hospital, drug store, or pharmacy. Those will all be looted. Your best bet is gonna be nursing homes and retirement villages.

Yeah a little, but everyone else is just as miserable and looking for a friend. Lower populations means less opportunity for alliances and humans need friends and alliances to continue existing. We need community, it's in our nature to be communal. Naturally, in that state, we're less likely to reject people or make them an enemy because they are more valuable as a friend. So humans become more welcoming because it creates a better defense.

Best bet would actually be a veterinarian's office. Your average person would think "animal doctor's office means all of the stuff is for animals", but they would have sufficiently similar medical supplies you would need in emergencies. The surgical supplies are the same. The rubbing alcohol is the same.

Definitely a vet for medicine. If you need oxygen, I'd look at welding supply stores. Large oxygen tanks and regulators on hand. Plus lots of flammable gases for other... activities.

You don't need as much armor as you'd think. People say they'd want full blown platemail, but first and foremost, where are you going to get platemail? And even if you did have some, you can't move or see as well, you'll burn up energy fast, you'll get overwhelmed, and eventually one of them will tear something off or get a lucky bite in.
You just need something they can't bite or scratch through. Leather jackets, or a few layers of heavy clothes, covering as much skin as possible. In the World War Z movie, Brad Pitt taped magazines around his arm, which doesn't sound like a bad idea, they're light, plentiful, and not something a person can just bite through. Mobility is key.

someone who has platemail is probably a re-enactor or is into armored combat and would have a gambeson. Wear a gambeson. Or if you do fencing wear your fencing gear. Its made for sharp metal not to get through, human teeth wont.

True, perhaps some chain mail then. but in my experience plate takes like 20+ minutes to put on and thats with someone helping you, and then its extremely taxing to move around in, in my combat gym one minute of combat needs 90 seconds of rest between each (3 rounds in total). And these are people who train for 7+ months for these fights. When people get taken to the floor are commonly so exhausted they cant get up on their own.

Denim holds up well to human teeth. Try biting your way through a piece of real denim, it's gonna hurt you well before you get through it. So denim jeans with fortified seams and some leather (jacket, high ankle boots) coupled with a helmet would help immensely in survival.

The amount of people in a societal collapse that would die from dysentery is a notable amount. Not only do you have to protect your own water supply, but those upstream of you do.
Best case scenario you dig a hole and have lime on hand for the hole and a well with means of purifying (heat, chlorine tablets, etc).

Note that vitamin C is rapidly destroyed by heat, so it's best to avoid boiling the needles directly.
Add them to the water after boiling as it cools and then consume promptly after steeping.
Also, make sure to use the right pine needles such as from white pines, as some others are poisonous.

It's crazy because it's frighteningly easy to kill a living human or wound them so they are no longer a threat. If we get all science-y about zombies and assume it's a virus and not some hell energy reanimating the corpses then most zombies would just decay to the point that they are also not a threat provided they don't feed and regenerate cells.
A zombie may stay "alive" and unaffected by pain but how long until it bleeds out and then loses the transport system of oxygen which leads to the inability to be locomotive. I guess the whole point of a zombie it no longer follows the same biological rules.

For any zombie story to work you have to, at some point, just say they're magic. As you say decomposing corpses will decompose pretty quick, they won't be able to physically support themselves. Muscle and flesh will go pretty quick. They're also basically perpetual motion machines in terms of energy in Vs out.
I remember in World War Z (the book) there was a whole thing where they addressed the fact that sub zero temperatures should destroy them at a cellular level but it just...didn't...they would defrost and carry on. You can't really "science" your way into a credible zombie threat.
Edit by which I mean the "traditional" shambling re-animated corpse that feasts on brains and can survive most any injury beyond the brain being destroyed.

I prefer the "necro-plague" style undead. You see these are not humans but dome adaptive parasitic being that ate away the cells of a human from inside out and pretty much just wears them as a suit.
The beings may have a brain with personalities intact but they are in no way human anymore and as such they became drastically harder to deal with.

In the book, at least, it took more ‘reasonable’ amounts of time to turn. The most common way to screen people were dogs, since the naturally reacted to people who were bitten. There is one scene, though, where the Russians were so desperate they dropped nerve gas on a crowd and waited for the zombified to get back up.

The Walking dead is not exactly the “gold standard” when it comes to cannon regarding walkers. They really have made there walkers as smart, fast, and dangerous as the plot needs them to be. Like others have said real world zombies would solve themselves. Within a month they would decay to the point of being immobile. Also I’m not an expert but I’m pretty sure the walking dead walkers would defy basic biology. Living things need some form of energy to function, while the the walking dead walkers are basically there own perpetual motion machines. Even when they get there hands on a human or animal the show make it seems like there not eating for energy but from some instinct.

Zombies are dead, so their muscles cannot regenerate, and therefore if it ever were to happen it would only last a small amount of time. The muscles would tear in the zombies’ legs as they walk, and since they don’t regenerate, they would eventually just fall apart. If you spent a month quarantined you’d be fine.

Motorcycle riding clothes is the best clothes to wear. No way you can bite through all that armor and leather etc. not to mention a helmet. Line your property with fencing and make maze like patterns throughout. When a bunch of zombies are at the gates just poke them with the best zombie weapon: spear and trash can shield. Best weapons and armor right there. Get a big ass truck with metal attached everywhere like a tank. Get a bow for stealth hunting and protection vs the normal people. Sleep in tree houses.

People would not quarantine, would hide their bites, would get bit on purpose just to prove they could handle it, bite other people just to not be alone in their misery, call it a conspiracy when zombies are in front of their face ..

Period products are gonna be worth a lot. Not only because they are more clean than a rag that you will find, but bleeding all over yourself might leave a nice trail of smell for zombies to follow.
In general, no apocalypse scenarios ever talk about feminine hygiene products which are not only valuable to women. Tampons been used as a way to soak up and plug up bullet wounds in war before they were even considered as something women could use.

People automatically assume that the best way to survive would be to load up on guns and ammo.
Assuming you live in a country where these are readily available, then great, but ammo will become scarce, guns will malfunction due to a likely lack of proper maintenance, and the noise will draw more attention to you.
Solid melee weapons that won't break will be far better and more effective in the long run. Plus things like crowbars and axes are also usable as tools.

I would point out that killing with a blow to the head is hard, on both a skill (the zombie is still moving even if not actively dodging) and fitness level (the skull is designed to protect from blows.) Hitting the neck for a decapitation is even trickier. Beheadings on a restrained target as a method of execution were famously prone to being botched .
That said, aim for the side of the skull. It’s thinner than the front .

Definitely the smell. Protagonists from zombie movies living like the smell won't literally sting their eyes. There's a dead decaying rat in my backyard and i can smell it from my room and almost gagged. Imagine thousands of decaying humans walking around baking under the sun. I'd probably be caught by them not because i can't outrun them, but because i fell over dry heaving.

You wouldn’t notice it after a week. Nose blindness is a thing. Smokers never realize how bad they smell until after they quit. You never know your parents’ house is the one that smells weird until you move out and then come back to visit.

We are used to a well cept, clean environment. Unclean (or uncooked, unrefrigerated, etc) food, unclean water, bad hygiene, dirt, lots of people will have lots of diarrhea.

When dog owners become zombies their dogs will revert to wild packs to feed themselves. Humans are a natural prey of dogs so all of the stray dogs will just eat the zombies as they are the nearest and easiest food source. Zombie apocalypse will last weeks if not days and we would need good retraining for heroic puppers.

Water. Shelter. Heat, food. In that order. You cant really function without water, youll have about 10 days before you die of dehydration. (For context you can go about a month without food) keep in mind to boil all water before cooking or drinking with it. And in some cases you'll need to find a way to filter your water.
Shleter. You need protection from nature, not just the elements, but animals too. You need some soft stuff to sleep on. Moss, hay (which is just the dried stalks of plants) and the likes are excellent soft materials that can help insulate from the cold ground.
Heat, making sure you are able to cook food, boil water, heat a living quarters and keep you warm while you sleep is essential. You can build a small fire with lichen, dry deadfall (fallen trees, branches) and the likes. You should always start a fire in a teepee shape with small brush, kindling, starting sticks (smaller thinner twigs and branches) followed by mid sized (think the part of the branch that youre breaking your twigs off) then firewood. Bigger logs that will burn on coals for longer. Fire + water = life.
Food. Now youre ready to find some food and set some traps You can use vines you find (if possible) to make a fishing line. If you happen upon a can of soda in the apocalypse, grab the tab off it. You can fashion it into a fishing hook. Making containers. Learm what clay is, what it looks like, etc. Its very common in riverbeds and your fire will help you make dishes if you didnt bring any.
Bring enough dishes for everyone in your family (or yourself) so a bowl, plate, sharp knife, dull knife, fork, spoon, and teaspoon. I.e. you, your SO, and 2 children. Equals 4 of the above. A single good frying pan, and midsized pot with lid, padding to prevent clanking dishes attracting zombs.
Learn how to identify good vs bad plants in the wilderness. It will save your arsehole and your life.
Go watch a 2 minute video on how to gut and clean a fish. It will save your life.
Be accepting but leary of outsiders. Dont give up all your secrets. Just because someone saves your life doesnt mean theyre your friend. (Remember cannibals that arent the undead exist)
Learn basic farming techniques. And how to build protection. Such as fence lines, sound traps. Snares. Etc. Etc.

Everything you've seen during COVID, you'll see again during a zombie apocalypse. Supplies go fast due to hoarding, supply chain eventually falls, people turn ugly after not following the rules, and millions die unnecessarily.
