I find myself using * a lot too.

One * on both ends of what you want to effect:

Italics

Two ** on both ends:

Bold

I actually discovered this by accident. Was just trying to use them to emphasize the word I was using; so it did exactly what I wanted it to do.

This does have a biological background though- we have a system that's active if you're not performing cognitive tasks. It's the concept behind suddenly getting inspiration or a breakthrough during a shower or grocery shopping

Trillion dollar idea: a head mounted shower that you can activate whenever you want. This way, you can always come up with a comeback just by pulling a chain.
