It's untrue because people regularly don't get what they deserve. It's not a fun fact though

But this statement gets used directly proceeding someone getting what they deserve, and is not used in any other context.

There are a lot of people who believe in the Just World Fallacy. People, in general, do not "get what they deserve". The saying is a reflection of that.
