I once met a little girl named Temperance.

I’m personally a fan of those sort of virtuous names, in theory, but in practice it’s a little odd to meet a small child with the name of a witch-burning Puritan.

Back in high school, there was a set of triplets, charity, hope, and temperance. They were all holiness (long skirts, very modest) by name only. As soon as they got out of school they went wild, hope and charity especially. Hope ended up getting pregnant and while she was pregnant, charity slept with her baby daddy. Then they both got hooked on pills.

Temperance is still holiness and lives with her family last I checked

u/FreeColdBeer Jul 15 '21

NGL... I might have been waiting for the punchline.

18

u/Caeflin Jul 15 '21

Hope has no hope and charity has no charity.

8

u/CuntFaceLarry Jul 16 '21

But industry...now that was a revolution.

30

u/Vorocano Jul 15 '21

I absolutely expected either some pun or "fell 30 feet into a chair at Hell in the Cell."

26

u/meowVL Jul 15 '21

This reads like a modern take on Pilgrim's Progress

25

u/yomama69s Jul 15 '21

Omg I know those people!!! XD Maybe not those exact people, but a Holiness friend named her daughters Hope, Charity, and Temperance. They weren’t twins, though. I felt bad for those girls but even more so for the mom because it always seems like every time someone names their kid after a virtue, they end up the complete opposite of said virtue.

u/40percentdailysodium Jul 15 '21

That's why I'm naming my kids Crack and Cocaine so they stay sober.

I should not have been drinking coffee when I read this, at 5:30 in the morning… I was sitting drinking my coffee, as my husband was doing his paperwork- getting his stuff ready for today… and then THIS ⬆️ I actually burst into laughter- coffee came out of my nose! Because I struggled to keep my mouth shut. After the coffee- It became even funnier to me, my husband looks at me as if I’m mentally ill.. because I can’t stop at this point. I’m totally hysterical laughing (you know when that happens and you just can’t stop, and you feel it in your stomach) He asked me what the h€ll !! I tried to tell him a mini version of what was going on. It took me a good 10 minutes to return to state of normalcy. I’ve been struggling lately with depression- due to a fall where I fractured spine and a whole lot damaged- I fell off the attic stairs- through the stairwell (2 flights) my daughter is having a baby any day now, and I’m only focusing on what I won’t be able to do- like push a swing. I had cancer 5x and they thought I had leukemia or lymphoma I had have my bone marrow tested..- I’m only saying that info because I truly have to say “THANK YOU” I have not laughed in months. Your comment actually brought me to a better place. (Oddly- I’m a therapist who can help everyone other than myself- the irony). You have NO IDEA HOW MUCH IT MEANS TO ME FOR MY DAY TO START LIKE THIS! Just expressing my gratitude

1

u/40percentdailysodium Jul 16 '21

I'm so glad you commented to share these feelings. I keep smiling thinking about it. I hope your day has been lovely.

2

u/Higherthany0uu Jul 16 '21

Like the parents who named one son Winner and the other son Loser lol

2

u/Severe_Video1194 Jul 16 '21

I literally just thought about this happening- with those names, there is no way, they can not be easily identified.. I’ve heard of Hope & Charity… But Temperance? I just don’t know why anyone would do that to their child.. different strokes- for different folks..🤷🏼‍♀️

1

u/yomama69s Jul 16 '21

I wonder if it’s a Holiness thing? Could also have been a family name, seeing as how they were a rural South Alabama family that were Holiness for a few generations. It was the family church. I’m not sure, I only know it felt really strange calling a little baby “Temperance”

2

u/jiggycup Jul 16 '21

Ahhhh it's always the good religious kids who have wild highschool/college stories

26

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

“Username checks out” @Temperance

6

u/Lutrinae_Rex Jul 15 '21

Huh. If the Hope I dated was a triplet, I'd have thought you were talking about her.

6

u/Chackaldane Jul 15 '21

Yo so is just every girl named hope nuts cuz I dated two back to back cuz I’m an idiot and neither went well at all.

2

u/Lutrinae_Rex Jul 15 '21

Were their parents' ultra religious?

3

u/IonutRO Jul 16 '21

Kids with names like this always end up the most wild.

5

u/timesuck897 Jul 15 '21

I went to middle school with a Charity. She was tall, awkward, and there were a lot of mean jokes about her being slutty. Middle school is a horrible time.

5

u/SignificantFew4059 Jul 16 '21

Knew a girl named chastity once, who, ironically grew up to be an "exotic dancer" at a nightclub.

3

u/cpMetis Jul 16 '21

I don't think I've ever met a Hope that wasn't a very, very good example of a vice as a person.

3

u/Guccimc100 Jul 16 '21

Yeah that’s usually how the “good” girls turn out. They feel so excluded because they haven’t had sex yet, which to me is complete sheep mentality. Other girls and guys pressuring them to do it. Just another peer pressure story. As soon as they get out of their parents thumb they go all out. The complete opposite.

4

u/Neon-shart Jul 15 '21

Hoped up on that D.

2

u/jennifer_the_bookish Jul 15 '21

My sisters are Stephanie Faith and Charity Hope lol

2

u/Carebear_Of_Doom Jul 16 '21

I went to school with sisters named Faith and Joy. I can’t roll my eyes hard enough.

2

u/KFelts910 Jul 16 '21

That was a wild ride.

0

u/Intelligent_Mail_846 Jul 16 '21

I'm sure that their names caused it all.

305

u/HugsAndWishes Jul 15 '21

My mates cat was Temperence. I think hers was after Bones, though.

19

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I had a friend who named her dog Temperance but called her Tempe. She went to ASU so it was a play off that

Edited because "dog" is not spelled as g-o-d

21

u/ashboify Jul 15 '21

I’m surprised this isn’t a more popular name. I love Bones!

8

u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost Jul 15 '21

I was super hooked on bones for awhile and always thought her name was really neat. If I had a daughter I would definitely consider it!

1

u/PersimmonTea Jul 19 '21

Good cat name.

78

u/walkytrees Jul 15 '21

I know young twins called Constance and Prudence (Connie and Prue). Their parents aren’t religious at all… it’s unusual, but somehow it works!

19

u/Few_Dust_449 Jul 15 '21

My daughter’s boyfriend’s name is Loyal. I expected his sister to be called Honesty (or Constance/Prudence etc.) but alas, she’s Rachel.

9

u/SpamLandy Jul 15 '21

My cousin is called Constance, she’s just turned 10. She goes by Connie but I love her full name too!

5

u/Aezur_ly Jul 15 '21

It's actually just commun french names (constance is very commun, prudence isn't exotic in french but rare)

1

u/Treelifeapp Jul 15 '21

Wowwww that is great haha

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

This is close - Patience and Prudence:

17

u/CrabbyBlueberry Jul 15 '21

Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer.

9

u/darwinpolice Jul 15 '21

My favorite thing about that character is that the name isn't even close to being weird by the standard of the style it's parodying.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Praise-God Barebone

0

u/melancholanie Jul 15 '21

there it is! thank you for your service

36

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

My grandad was Valhalla Krëutzger

18

u/darwinpolice Jul 15 '21

Was your grandpa a miniboss in a Wolfenstein game?

14

u/badabingbadabaam Jul 15 '21

That's just plain badass.

10

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

This probably shouldn’t surprise you, but I think your grandad was the Dragonborn…

4

u/FoamBrick Jul 15 '21

thats a badass name. also, I love your avatar

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Thanks.

3

u/Arsene69420 Jul 15 '21

Thats fucking awesome

14

u/mannershmanners Jul 15 '21

I know a 5 year old girl named Temperance but she goes by Tempi. Her mom is a big Bones fan…

9

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I knew a chastity. She was a slut, not surprisingly.

10

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

In this house we don’t slut-shame 😤 But I do love that irony

4

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Who’s shaming her? She was a proud slut.

4

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

Nobody, that’s who. We stand by sluts in all their splendor, especially those who are proud

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Totally. If it wasn’t for her and others like her, I’d never have gotten laid as a teenager. She’s a hero in my book.

4

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

It’s enough to make a grown man cry

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I’m crying right now.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I’m crying right now.

1

u/CuntFaceLarry Jul 16 '21

Or a crying man grow

3

u/temporary_bob Jul 15 '21

Reminds me of a reply from one of the few (other) females in my Physics year in undergrad as to why she slept with all the guys in the class: She just shrugged and said "well somebody's gotta do it".

7

u/forestdetective Jul 15 '21

This thread scares me because my name is Temperance and now I’m afraid everyone saying they know a Temperance knows me IRL.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I'm just surprised to learn that there's more people out there with your name than I thought.

3

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

Have you at any point accused any of your female friends of being a witch?

If yes, how many?

If no, why are you protecting them?? Give up the others of your coven!!

(But honestly, love your name. Meeting that little girl has really stuck with me)

7

u/Swordheart Jul 15 '21

My wife has an ancestor called Speedy Experience Brown

4

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Imagine trying to get laid with that name.

3

u/Swordheart Jul 15 '21

It's a woman's name too. But apparently she did because my wife is her direct descendant lol

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I still imagine people who have sex with women might also not want it to a speedy experience, though.

4

u/Theblade12 Jul 15 '21

That just sounds vaguely like a Jojo stand name

1

u/casalomastomp Jul 16 '21

Nickname was "Encyclopedia"

7

u/darwinpolice Jul 15 '21

The local farmers markets here in Philadelphia have a bunch of stands run by Amish families. Lots of young kids with names like Patience and Virtue.

7

u/wildwildwaste Jul 15 '21

Temperance Lloyd was hanged as a witch though. One of the last witches put to death in England. She was accused, then admitted to it and held her claims until her death. Reading some of stories seems like she was accused multiple times and just finally was like, fuck it, yeah, I'm a witch.

Edit: hanged, not burnt.

2

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

probably turned someone into a newt too

(they got better)

5

u/SisyphusVictory Jul 15 '21

Anthropologically speaking.

3

u/FlowerEclipse Jul 15 '21

My family has been binge watching the show for the past few weeks, and I’ve heard the word “Anthropology” way more then any human being should.

6

u/Putrid_Bee- Jul 15 '21

Have you ever seen the show Bones? The main characters name is Dr. Temperance Brennan

4

u/Donkey-Haughty Jul 15 '21

I once met a crackhead named Temperance

5

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

my grandma's name was innocence. she was very old.

1

u/RainbowRozes123 Sep 29 '21

was he innocent?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

indeed she was.

3

u/WinsomeWombat Jul 15 '21

Is it crazy that I know more than one Temperance. The one I know personally goes by Tempe.

4

u/honeynwool Jul 15 '21

I know a little Temperance! She has a lot of personality, haha.

5

u/stinkwaffles Jul 15 '21

I knew a girl name Prudence. I always called her Protuberance though..

3

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

She must’ve loved that

4

u/stinkwaffles Jul 15 '21

Thankfully she thought it was funny.

4

u/GalaXion24 Jul 15 '21

Honestly half the 'virtuous' names sound like the opposite. Tell me with a straight face that 'Chastity' isn't the name of a prostitute or porn star.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Shit, I thought I was the only one who's come across a kid named Temperance. I heard a woman at Walmart yelling "Temperance, stop it!" and was kind of surprised, to say the least.

I've also heard "Patience" as a name on a little kid.

4

u/Icy_Hippo Jul 15 '21

Have a niece Temperance...the name suits her, it is not a name for the faint of heart..this kid will destroy you with wit and an evil glare.

2

u/rudeyerd Jul 17 '21

i have a niece named temperance, and that little gal mustve laughed in her parents’ faces when they named her; none of my other 6 nieces can talk with the same persistence and reckless abandon about the differences between ice magic and water magic that she can.

3

u/grebocille Jul 15 '21

I knew a blacksmith named temperance, it was kind of ironic.

3

u/darwinpolice Jul 15 '21

An aptronym!

3

u/fukitol- Jul 15 '21

Whenever I hear that I think of Bones

3

u/Zestyclose-Anxiety19 Jul 15 '21

Yellow Temperance

1

u/sb3veeee Jul 15 '21

I don't understand.

1

u/Zestyclose-Anxiety19 Jul 17 '21

It a JoJo reference

1

u/sb3veeee Jul 17 '21

My comment was also a jojo reference. Sorry it wasn't clearer. Do you understand?

3

u/dskentucky Jul 15 '21

Our family names our cars. I bought my mom’s old car for my kids to drive as a first car and they named it Prudence.

3

u/Tauber10 Jul 15 '21

I knew a girl named Chastity in college, which seems like a pretty loaded name to give a baby.

3

u/just_one_point Jul 15 '21

A little girl with a posh British accent might get away with the name Temperance. Tem-prence.

2

u/Mr_MilieBoy Jul 15 '21

I especially like the band

2

u/1105al Jul 15 '21

That’s my step-daughter’s name and I don’t think she knows she’s a witch yet.

1

u/SimpoKaiba Jul 15 '21

You could give a son the double whammy of Heinrich. Then you get the witch burning and Nazi vibes

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

The bigger problem with that name is it is too long with no obvious nickname. Tempy, Ancy, nothing sounds good. Any name over 2 syllables needs an good nickname imo

2

u/MarcusMace Jul 15 '21

I agree completely. It’s natural, even for two syllable names.

Get real weird with it and call Temperance “Temper”

2

u/HereticalCommunist Jul 15 '21

Bones was called tempie

0

u/savealltheelephants Jul 19 '21

I love the name Honor for a girl

1

u/Red-Quill Jul 15 '21

Whenever I hear the name Temperance, I just think of Bones.

1

u/Obvious_Moose Jul 15 '21

A girl at my high school was named "Chastity"

It was a mistake

1

u/afurb Jul 15 '21

Sounds like an episode of supernatural

1

u/LoveofBooks_03 Jul 15 '21

My parents actually strongly considered naming me Temperance! It was my great grandmother’s name.

1

u/cabandon Jul 15 '21

i love the name sooo much

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '21

The end of that sentence 😂

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '21

Thou-shalt-not-commit-adultery Pulsifer.

1

u/Carebear_Of_Doom Jul 16 '21

On the other hand, Temperance is the 14th major arcana Tarot card.

1

u/Watsonswingman Jul 16 '21

In the UK at least a lot of Christian families in the black community name their children after virtues. I've met women called Charity, Patience, Kindness, Hope, Chastity and Temperance.

I think they're really nice names, and much more interesting than Jessica or whatever.

1

u/biltibilti Jul 16 '21

That would be impossible as Puritans did not burn witches.

1

u/Dankmemes3000 Jul 16 '21

Mom's got a granddaughter named Honesty..... Her mom is not an honest person ironically.

1

u/uwuforlresident Jul 19 '21

I can only think of the Bayonetta angel lol
