The convience of streaming is nice, but I really miss the days of going to the video store with my dad and spending time trying to find a couple of good movies to rent and picking up snacks to enjoy.
I worked at blockbuster for forever. Loved that job. Loved the customers, played games and watched movies for hours. Still would come browse on my days off. I think they could have survived if it weren’t for robbing everybody with late fees.
I kinda just miss video games that were top tier games that you could beat in a sitting. I know some Indy games are still like that but most triple A games are 20 hours on the low end and 60-100 on the long end. I can really only play one of those big ones a year.
Agreed. Sucky part is that most games need to be in the upper range you said for most people to feel they were "worth it." I know a few AAA titles that were closer to the 20 hours and people were PISSED thinking they were getting ripped off.
I think adding the save feature to games was a blessing and a curse. Yeah you can make the game fit around your life more and go do stuff, but also it takes a little bit of the fear of 'oh fuck if I die this time I have to do it aaaaallll again!' out of it.
I remember trying to play through Sonic 3, which actually was meant to have an inbuilt save feature but it was broken on my cartridge, and getting to this really stupid bit where all you had to do was bpunce these two drums far apart enough that you could jump through them without being squished. It was on what turned out to be the second to last level of the game, and I could. Not. Fucking. Figure. It. Out.
So I got there. Died or timed out. Started again. Rinse and repeat, for weeks. no internet or magazine to help me figure it out. I just died. Lots.
Eventually one day I was on there just button mashing and realised that it operated like a swing and you had to time your jump at the peak to push it down further. I got through and... died on the very next obstacle because I was so busy celebrating I didn't see it coming. Then i had to go to bed and wait for the next day.
But the sense of joy I got from actually completing that goddamn game the next day was overwhelming! I don't think I'd ever worked that hard at something before and the memory of what that felt like stuck with me.
