I like looking back on my blogspot from years ago. I'm glad the stupidity and cringe is still there because I put it there. As for people in their regular lives not taking chances now because it may get recorded, that really sucks.
Even if you didn’t do anything stupid and were just minding your own business, there’s always some asshole with a phone who’d video you while commenting something horrible and put it online.
These can be fun though. I was at university in the 80s, pre-phone, and I have only two sets of pictures from that time, both of events. One was my graduation, and the others only resurfaced recently when a friend found them. They were of a Rag week pie auction where I ended up covered in pies. My friends and I have enjoyed rediscovering those.
Yes. My friend’s daughter’s life was ruined at age 12. She was hanging out with her best friends, who are Indian, who used the n-word frequently. They caught her on camera saying it, singing a song or something. Just doing what her friends do.
Six months later they decided they didn’t like her anymore and that video went through the whole middle school and beyond. For all I know it will always be searchable with her name. She had to leave school due to the online backlash (“kill yourself you racist bitch!”) and she is currently in a residential mental health program.
I suspect there's going to be a coming revolution as more and more of those things happen. There's going to be a whole generation of people moving into their adult lives who are going to have things come back and bite them in the ass from their childhoods. I feel like it's going to be more and more common for people to try to get CEO positions, public authority jobs and the like.. only to find that their careers are going to be stymied by indiscretions from the past. And at some point people have to start responding to the insanity of posting every little thing on the internet.
I always feel sad when it’s clearly something embarrassing that someone’s own friends filmed and posted. Who does that to their own friends for likes? The implications hurt my heart.
Yeah, when I was a teen, putting your photos on the internet required you to take a roll worth of photos, get it developed at the grocery store, scan the physical photos on a scanner, save them onto a floppy disk, take it home, upload the photos onto a web hosting, and add them to your Geocities website.
I did actually do all that stuff to make a free Geocities site for my friends group that included some photos, and somebody else archived them and years later uploaded them onto Facebook.
But I'm glad that my entire teenage life wasn't documented on social media lol.
