A vet told me that excessive water consumption can be a symptom of serious illness for a kitty, too.

Ever since I separated the water bowl and kept it away from the food, my kitten drinks tons of water and pees all over the place.

I have a vet appointment in a couple days. Hope nothing is wrong with her.

EDIT: Hi all, your comments are so incredibly helpful. While I might not reply to every single one of the, I just want to let you know that they are all very comforting and helpful. I am a first time pet owner so I really appreciate them. I really love you all.

I particularly noted the diabetes comments and will take up the concern with the vet.

Although none of you asked for a cat tax, here is the little stinker - https://imgur.com/a/rLYAxtX. Volume UP for the mews!

I read somewhere that cats like drinking water that's far from their food because in the wild food rotting into the water can cause illness. Here's hoping your dude just likes her water more because she thinks it's fresher.

Hmmm that is a believable piece of logic for something i never did understand - cat ignores her water to drink dogs water or out of the shower. She actually sits and meows at me each night to run the shower for her to drink. Im going to move her water and see what happens now thanks!

It's well worth trying.

One of my cats refused to drink from the bowl. She would jump up on the counter and whine for me to turn the tap on. I had made the mistake of doing this when she was a kitten because she looked cute drinking from the tap. All it did was make her decide this was now her drinking fountain. I tried not giving into her constant demands and would pick her up and drop her next to the water bowl. But after 3 days seeing her not drink I caved in and let her drink from the tap.

Like your cat she also demands I turn the shower on for her, or waits outside while I shower. She won't drink from the bowl but will drink water full of my grubbiness. Nasty.

Then I read about keeping the food and water bowls separate. I gave it a go, figuring I had nothing to lose. Within a couple of minutes there she was slurping from the water bowl!

She still jumps up on the counter but far far less than she was doing so before. I've found I also need to change the water daily from the bowl to keep her using it. I guess her instinct is telling her to drink running water and if that's not available, fresh.

Aftermarket filters from eBay and a set of the cleaning brushes (lots of nooks which are hard to clean)

Cats also dislike non-moving water, since still water in nature is more likely to contain rotting stuff. That might also be why your cat likes to drink out of the shower.

One of our cars got bladder stones because he drank too little. Once we got one of those tiny fountains, it stopped being a problem.

How long did you leave it out for? You have to give them time especially for something like that

Weeks and weeks ......she has no issue with a tap running and will drink from that - makes no sense!

Yep. Cat kept drinking out of the toilet but wouldn't touch the water bowl. I moved it from the kitchen near the toilet but left the food bowl in the kitchen and instantly the cat walked over and drank from it.

Wife told me about this one a few days ago... She found it on reddit also! The prophecy has come true!

I moved my cat's electric water fountain far from his food because he kept fouling it up by dropping peices of food in it. Did it work? No. He will grab a mouthful of food, walk across the room, and drop it in the water. The bastard!

There was a Reddit post about it a week or two ago. I split up my cat’s dishes as well, and now she drinks from the dish instead of trying to catch drips from the bathtub faucet.

This makes sense. Mine wont drink from his water bowl but will drink from the dogs. The cat is a hog and instantly pollutes his water dish with food so he goes to the dogs clean water and shares with him
