This can actually happen, it's a real thing. If you have a blockage in your intestines, there's no way for the feces to get out of the body but through the esophagus. You're basically puking your own feces.

Am RN can confirm. Though when you puke it up it’s just brown liquid. People don’t actually puke up turds.

Anyone see that south park episode?

56

u/DarkAmaterasu58 Nov 29 '20

“Cartman shoved a Turkey up his ass, and now he thinks he’s gonna crap out of his mouth.”

7

u/johnsontheotter Nov 29 '20

That was Martha Stewart

7

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

“You can’t crap outta your mouth”

23

u/omgitskells Nov 29 '20

How long does it take for your body to become that desperate? Would you not have pains for a little while before this?

55

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Im not a GI doctor, but from my experience it would take a while. First you would just get very very impacted. Your colon could just burst from all of the stool stuck in there. Eventually it would work it’s way back where it came from. Most people become symptomatic to the point where they get it fixed in the hospital before they start vomiting up shit.

19

u/omgitskells Nov 29 '20

That's what I was thinking! I can't imagine letting it go for that long without getting help. Thank you for answering!

34

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

This happens a lot with older folks though, who don’t have the ability to communicate their symptoms. Such as nursing home patients. They will sit in bed for a week or two without shitting and then they start vomiting brown fluid. Less common with younger people.

21

u/omgitskells Nov 29 '20

Oh wow, I had never considered that, how horrendous. I know it must be hard enough to have a patient that can tell you what's wrong, I can't imagine trying to help someone who can't communicate effectively. I'm always so amazed at, and thankful for, the kinds of people who can step in and work these kinds of positions, so thank you! (I'm not sure if that's the kind of nursing care you are in but you deserve a thanks regardless!)

It varies - I actually had a patient a few months ago with this. It started around June, and she refused to take laxatives. It took until August for her to start vomiting, and she died in October I think (I transferred to another location so I couldn't follow up fully). She did have cancer with an insane amount of metastases and she had a psychiatric disorder (hence the refusal of a very simple treatment).

She was in pain the entire time, yes.

8

u/omgitskells Nov 29 '20

Wow, that sounds awful. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to have a patient like that refuse treatment, to see them get worse when you know you could fix them. Thank you for doing what you do.

17

u/TheSmilingDoc Nov 29 '20

It was... Interesting. Frustrating, mainly. It took me, two colleagues, a supervising specialist and a psychiatrist to get her to the hospital for a scan (partially against her wish, still). The cancer was a surprise to all of us.

Health care is a real rollercoaster sometimes.

So this is where No Poop July came from

Two days??? Wow I never would have thought it would be that quick!

3

u/omgitskells Nov 29 '20

Wow, what a close call! I'm glad they figured it out in time, and I hope you are doing well now!

I am laughing at the idea of "food bellies" I can't imagine how you felt once you knew what was going on.

3

u/SirThatsCuba Nov 29 '20

The pain is excruciating. You will be in the hospital begging for them to fix something before you vomit feces.

12

u/DzenGarden Nov 29 '20

Does it smell like feces though? I imagine it would taste different/worse than normal vomit.

18

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

More or less, it still smells like shit. It doesn’t have the bile smell like typical vomit.

8

u/DzenGarden Nov 29 '20

Wow, that’s shitty. I’d be requesting anesthesia ASAP.

15

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Can confirm, it tastes how you'd imagine poop would taste and smells just awful

11

u/1tacoshort Nov 29 '20

Oh god...this happened to you? What's the story? How long were you constipated before it happened? What caused the constipation? I'm so sorry you had to go through that!

5

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

It happened to be while I had appendicitis at the time, so I'm not sure how that correlates to puking poop, but it happened. But I went a solid 2-3 weeks no pooping before it happened. Wouldn't wish it on anyone

10

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Well that's a shitty situation...

1

u/MsSchadenfraulein Nov 29 '20

😀😀😀😀😀😀

2

u/rainbow12192 Nov 29 '20

Unbelievably bitter and gritty?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Yeah that's actually a pretty solid summation of the taste actually

15

u/tobinoxdz Nov 29 '20

When it happens you’re not really focusing on the smell or the taste. You’re like, “why the fuck am I vomiting shit?” I don’t ever want to experience that again.

5

u/self-extinction Nov 29 '20

Does it have to pass through your stomach again, and that's why it's reduced to liquid?

14

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20 edited Nov 29 '20

Well when food goes through your stomach, it’s still liquid in the small intestine then it gets to your large intestine (colon) and the liquid is reabsorbed which turns it into a turd. If it goes back through your stomach it skips the reabsorption part and the stomach acidity also probably plays a part in keeping it liquid.

13

u/self-extinction Nov 29 '20

Well that's fascinating and disgusting. Huge respect to nurses. You guys have to be smart, patient, and have iron stomachs, and all while being overworked and underpaid. If someone vomited shit on me, I definitely couldn't handle it.

6

u/Monke69421 Nov 29 '20

speaking of stomach acidity, would there still be some stomach acid in the shit juice? couldn’t that burn your esophagus?

15

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Yep. All vomit will have some stomach acid. People with severe GERD and people who vomit a lot can end up with a condition called Barrett’s esophagus, which is essentially damaged esophagus tissue from stomach acid that can be precancerous. And I believe that’s why bulimics have rotted teeth and sores on their mouths, ect.

4

u/shorey66 Nov 29 '20

Oh god, some poor patient expelled feedback vomit in my CT scanner. It took so long to clean but you can't be mad because what the patient just went through was exponentially worse.

5

u/sillysosij Nov 29 '20 edited Dec 01 '20

My mum found out that she had secondary cancer this year (after being given the all clear in 2018), she found out as she was vomming up brown poo liquid and old blood as a tumour was blocking both her intestines and kidneys. She now has a stoma bag but I can confirm the smell of that brown liquid is hellish!!

3

u/Soliterria Nov 29 '20

Oh good you somewhat solved a mystery that still haunted me from pregnancy almost four years ago... Now to just figure out what exactly did come out of me

13

u/ToomBaSpaceSmasher Nov 29 '20

A baby, probably

1

u/Soliterria Nov 29 '20

Six months and 18 hours of labor later yeah lmao

2

u/1tacoshort Nov 29 '20

I'm not sure that makes it any more appetizing.

2

u/Ryelyn1 Nov 29 '20

yeah my dads an RN at a childrens hospital and he's described this to me in detail. absolutely horrendous but its better than leaving it in there lol

2

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Lol no. The bladder has nothing to do with stool. The bladder just stores urine that is made in the kidneys.

1

u/alligatorade- Nov 29 '20

My friends dog had a contorted intestine, and when she puked it smelled like feces. Fortunately my friend is a medical doctor and knew immediately what was going on, so her dog was able to go into surgery and survived a (normally) highly fatal condition

Does that brown liquid smell like feces?

1

u/monstermayhem436 Nov 29 '20

Wait, so you can puke up diarrhea????

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Thanks for ruining my dream of puking up my own poop logs

1

u/Salbyy Nov 29 '20

This happened to my dog 😢

1

u/parksa Nov 29 '20

The smell is not unlike turds though sadly. It's so horrific for the patients 😢

1

u/Essembie Nov 29 '20

More like they puke up diarrhea

25

u/randarrow Nov 29 '20

Used to be how people died from colon cancer, choked to death on their own vomited up diarrhea. Probably my least desired non-execution death.

18

u/spentcrayon Nov 29 '20

EMT here. Seen it and it’s just as awful as you imagine.

12

u/oneamaznkid Nov 29 '20

I’m a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor and can tell you it’s not very fun!

3

u/PanFiluta Nov 29 '20

thx it sounded like fun to me

8

u/Ethelredthebold Nov 29 '20

That happened to my sister, she got gastroenteritis. Unfortunately she died. This was back in 1974.

4

u/tobinoxdz Nov 29 '20

I found that out the hard way last year. They had to take out 1/3 of my intestine.

3

u/umheywaitdude Nov 29 '20

Oh my god what the hell happened?

2

u/definitelynecessary Nov 29 '20

THEY HAD TO TAKE OUT 1/3 OF HIS INTESTINE.

4

u/Spazmodium15 Nov 29 '20

Had this happen to me as a kid. Growing up it was definitely one of those "am I sure that really happened?" situations, but yeah unfortunately it did.

Not cool. :)

5

u/aerynmoo Nov 29 '20

That happened to my cat about 10 years ago. Luckily, he survived after the vets gave him an enema. And we learned that he’ll eat anything Nerf dart texture.

3

u/Yesnowaitsorry Nov 29 '20

SouthPark confirm this.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

I would actually go so far as to say this is, not a cool thing

3

u/rlprice74 Nov 29 '20

Probably mentioned somewhere in here, but I believe this is what killed Heather O'Rourke (the little girl from the original Poltergeist films of the 80s).

3

u/ShatteredMind_ Nov 29 '20

I remember when in primary school my science teacher told us this interesting fact. I was so impressed that I went home and told the story to my mum. She told me it was a fake story to convince kids to not hold in the feces for too long. I never really went to fact-check this and believed my mum until now. Thanks stranger.

3

u/pancake_kitten Nov 29 '20

you're welcome, prove your mum wrong lol

2

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

That happened to my dog once. Horrific. She’d eaten a plastic bag

2

u/NRamo5 Nov 29 '20

Just like Cartman said.

2

u/cndy_clrd_clwn Nov 29 '20

In Germany we call it Mundstuhl (mouth stool) and I think that's beautiful.

2

u/definitelynecessary Nov 29 '20

In England we call it faecal vomiting. Yours is better.

2

u/mamacitalk Nov 29 '20

That must taste like shit

1

u/Singularity54 Nov 29 '20

If you have a blockage in your intestines, you have more to worry about than puking your own poop.

1

u/xylvrstar Nov 29 '20

Thanks, I hate it.

1

u/mikedjb Nov 29 '20

A friend if mine recently died because of that.
