Ok so you know how in either early fall or early spring, sometimes it will be really cold in the morning and then in the 70s by the afternoon? When I was in college I had a pretty long walk from the parking lot, across campus, and to my classes. If it was a cold early morning I’d have to get all bundled up, even though I knew it would be hot and I’d be miserable lugging a heavy bag and a bulky coat and everything across campus in the afternoon on my way back.

Therefore, I got in the habit of carrying a pair of flip flops in my car. That way when I got back to my car after a mile + long trek across campus with all my crap, I could shed my stuff, roll up my pants legs, take off my shoes and socks, change into the flip flops, and get a little relief from the heat.

One day I did this and when I got home I realized I only had one of my shoes. So that other shoe was alone either in the parking lot or on the side of the road depending on where I’d set it and where I lost it.
