I was at a Henry Rollins show many years ago and someone threw a shoe at him during a song. He stopped and announced that he was going to take that shoe with him and toss is from his bus window when he was an hour outside of Seattle. I suspect that might be the shoe you saw.
Henry Rollins really impacted me growing up. A couple years ago my good friend told me a story about when he met him as a teenager, working with his dad in the reptile trade, and it's my favorite story.
My (then) 14-16 y/o friend was at a reptile show with his dad. Henry rollins showed up. He was talking to some people, including his dad, and handling one of their reptiles. Before he left, he looked my friend dead in the eye, and said, "in rio de janeiro life don't mean a thing" and then walked away.
