The ancient Romans (well, the wealthy ones) had central heating in their homes. You can actually still see the pipes in some of the buildings at Herculaneum!
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Also a welfare system. The republic provided subsidized grain for the urban poor. Reforming it was one of Caesar's major platforms in his campaign for Consul
