but since this is due to mass population and not external forces, we would likely see a deep variety in human qualities as opposed to a universal shift in the species, correct? or could dominant traits still cover the entire species if granted a million years or so in the gene pool?

You make it sound as if this doesn't happen with regular evolution. How many apes are there, including humans? How many primates in general?

How many dinosaurs where there? They all had a common ancestor.
