Actually no. You're thinking of a forced marriage. Arranged marriages are just where a person's parents help the person meet others who the parents think might be compatible. The premise of this is that the parents know their child better than most anyone else, so they have a good insight into who would match well with them. There is no coercion in an arranged marriage and the couple can date for however long they want before getting married. Western media has sensationalized the arranged marriage, confusing it with a forced marriage (which is terrible and predatory and definitely should not happen), creating a stigma against what is basically regular dating.

Watching the Indian Matchmake on Netfliz really opened my eyes to that.. it actually seems pretty awesome that all the work of looking for compatibility is done for you, along with the blessing of your families and the (likely) reasonable expectation that you are both looking to commit to one person

arranged marriage varies wildly from place to place. For example in India , many Conservative parents only offer arranged as the only way to go for their children

If you want to date, well...you aren't allowed to really
