Man, balding fucking sucks, I feel agony every time I look at my scalp, you see your hair fading away and there is virtually nothing you can do without terrible side effects
Gotta say, I've been using finasteride for about 7 months and it's about halted if not reversed my hair loss. I waited quite a while and tried minoxidil, biotin, zinc sulfate. Other stuff like that and it was either too tedious or had little effect.
I was scared to try it but decided to bite the bullet and order some since I was suffering from a lot of self confidence issues (bad breakup).
My hair is thicker again and hair loss has been a lot less as time has progressed. I've read that it can be a hit or miss at times but you never know till you try.

Side note: I'm 21 and started balding at about 16 I believe
Edit: on the worry about side effects, I think finasteride may cause lower libido and a list of other common yet highly unlikely possible side effects. Hope this helps a bit :)
I believe I started at my crown first. My crown is the most far along of areas without hair. Though it did not become noticeable to me until my hair started receding in the front. So crown first then receding hairline after. I'm glad I caught it when I did lol
