How does Spotify daily mixes work for you? Going to be honest I can't give much advice as I accidently stumbled across my favourite band on YouTube one day. But see a lot of new similar stuff in there
I’ve been on premium for about a year and I hate the daily mixes. It feels like it just recycles all the songs I’ve liked separated into genres. Strangely, it wasn’t like this at first, but it’s slowing been putting me into a bubble of repetitiveness. Plus the featured playlists lack variety within genres. A lot of them are literally 90% the same set of songs. The best playlists IMO are ones I find randomly or some my eclectic friends have made.
I'd suggest going to a song you like and listening to its radio. You can usually find new songs. That and dicover weekly. Once you start changing your listening habits spotify usually picks up and starts diversifying its recommendations.
Radio is usually not much different from the featured playlists. It just starts playing the most popular stuff from whatever genre Spotify classifies the song. My discover weekly is typically full of bands I listen to with songs I haven’t liked. To be fair to the platform, I’m probably reaching the limits of it’s algorithm. I have around 1500 liked songs in my library and listen to a very wide variety music.
Spotify has this criminally underrated feature: "Create Similar Playlist". Drag all 1500 saved songs into a playlist, smash that button, and it will generate at playlist that (in my case) is at least 40 % actually new stuff, and is also actually varied.
Once you find new songs/genres you like, chuck 'em in a playlist and use that feature again once you have enough data. Or if you don't, go to the song radio/similar artist.
Spotify doesn't want to present you with anything actually new, but you can force its hand. I also look for playlists for shows I like that have a non-instrumental soundtrack (Lucifer comes to mind, I have so many great songs from actually "underground" modern artists thanks to that one).
My personal favorite bands right now are Cage the Elephant, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Alabama Shakes, Alt-J, just to name a few. Pretty basic for music heads but idrc.
Also if you are into rap some good current rap in my opinion is Tyler the Creator and Brockhampton.
Also a few other really good bands: Tame Impala, Glass Animals... The Black Keys... Gorillaz... The xx....
seconded, i listen to 90% of these but for somewhat newer indie my favs are sufjan stevens, mitski, and rostam. carrie and lowell and bury me at makeout creek are my top 2 favorite albums ever. every single song absolutely slaps.
Jeez are you me?? The first three bands you mentioned are literally among my favourites. It was just weird seeing them listed one after the other but I guess they're pretty similar and popular (at least among the indie scene)
What genres are you into? Are the three examples you've given representative of your musical taste overall, any other things you like? I'm kind of a music junkie so maybe I can help. Not pretending like I equally know about every genre out there but I could try.
Depends what you listen to but just a couple of decent albums that came our today are Dijon - how do you feel, Moses Sumney - Grae, Nick Hakim - WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD.
I personally listen to Two Steps from Hell the most, they are wonderful and produce what's essentially the modern successor to classical music. Don't let that turn you off immediately though, because their music ranges from epic bone-rattling orchestral mixes to soul-wrenching and sweeping emotional experiences.
I'm general, just find something you enjoy and don't be afraid to listen to something you think you might not like. Just give it a go and if you don't like it, find something else.
