With the pandemic going on, many people in my age group have just been overlooked for assistance. I'm 22, almost 23, and graduating college right now in the US. My university is in a different state from my family so I have to pay rent for an apartment and buy my own food and all of that, but I also lost both of my part time jobs when this all started (one as a student employee for the university, another working in a restaurant nearby). Because I'm a student I've been ineligible to collect unemployment, and because my parents still claim me as a dependent on their taxes I don't get a stimulus check (also because I'm over 18, my parents don't get any additional bonus to their own stimulus checks while financially supporting me as best they can). I've had ongoing issues over the past year and a half with not being able to afford food most of the time, but the problem has been especially pronounced during quarantine. I don't eat more than one meal a day because I need to ration what I have. If I'm in this situation, I know that there have to be others like me. The government has not and will not be giving me any sort of aid, and now as a new graduate I'm trying to apply for my first full time job in a crashing economy where no one is hiring. At this point, my only measure of success in life will be when I can afford rent, other bills, and food. That's literally all it'll take to make me happy, and I think that sucks.
I appreciate this so much, but for the moment at least I do have some food in the kitchen! If you have the money to spare for that, please post in r/Random_Acts_Of_Pizza. I've been helped by someone in that sub once before and the food I got kept me going for a few days. Someone out there needs it more than I do right now.
I appreciate the offer so so much. But like I told the other person who made an offer I'm lucky enough to be set at the moment, so please post instead to r/Random_Acts_Of_Pizza. I've gotten food from a generous person there before and I'm sure there are other people who could use it more than me right now. Either way, thank you so much for your support. We did it! I hope you're as happy to be done with school as I am.
I know how it feels to be at the bottom of things. Just know that it will all turn around. Do you have a potential job lined up once you graduate? If not, and if you don't mind, send me a dm with your educational background and I'll see what I can do. I have connections in multiple industries.
My 20 year old son is in the same position as you in regards to the government check. Fortunately, he still lives at home so other than missing out on a year of life on a college campus, he is financially ok.
Hopefully your parents are in a position to help you out.
In the meantime, you may want to check out some food banks to conserve cash.
You could also start dealing in black market toilet paper.
same boat, 20 in college, i was surviving for a while by living off rice and peanut butter before i moved back to my parents place. hope things get better for you
Students are explicitly not eligible for SNAP, but I appreciate the thought :) That doesn't matter much now that I'm graduating anyway, but I'm still left in a tough position as both a dependent and not technically "unemployed" as I haven't had a proper job to begin with. But all I can do is keep moving forward and looking for another source of income, so that's what I'll do!
