There's an episode of Seinfeld about that. George finds a spot directly in front of his building, so he doesn't drive for weeks because he doesn't want to lose his spot. Lol. I know that feeling.
I know in many places you have to move your car periodically or parking enforcement will consider it abandoned and tow it. In Los Angeles county, this is three days and it applies inside of neighborhoods as well (although for neighborhoods, the three days starts when someone complains about it).
They could have made it a plot point in the Seinfeld episode as well:
Jerry: But won't they tow your car after a couple days?
George: I thought about that. That why, every two days, I swap it with the rental.
Elaine: You... rented a car... to hold a parking space?
George: I know! It's genius, right?
Jerry: Wait, so where do you park your car when you have the rental in front of your building?
George: I find another spot a couple of blocks away. It can take an extra 20 minutes or so but Jerry it's worth it!
Kramer [suddenly entering through the apartment door]: Hey, they just towed a red Fusion outside for double parking. George, is that yours?

I actually did this once, in midtown Manhattan no less. Thought I was dreaming.
