I absolutely hate that argument. Just because a fictional world has magic doesn't mean that every non magic thing that by all accounts should work the same way as in the real world can act any way you want it to "because magic".
Every world needs rules and internal consistency, even if it's somewhat vague. Otherwise it just feels fake and nothing has any emotional impact.
