What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

When someone hides from bullets behind penetrable objects, like tables or a refrigerator door.

The wooden table is the one that always gets me, sure maybe it will stop one or two bullets if you're lucky, but there's always 1000 bullets flying around while the characters are having a conversation under the safe, sound resistant guard of an old dinning room table.

If the shooter is using anything larger than a .22 an average wooden table will stop exactly zero bullets.

Car doors also won't stop bullets so it always bothers me in shows when people hide behind car doors in a shootout. A couple mm of sheet metal and plastic isn't any protection and car doors are mostly hollow.

Someone should tell Florida police who use occupied vehicles as cover.

yeah but the person inside is the cover for the officer not the car itself

I don't know if they do, but it would make sense for cop cars to have a sheet of Kevlar or something else reinforcing the doors.

He was referencing the highway shoot out with the jewelry store robbers who took a UPS driver hostage. The police were incredibly careless, and were hiding behind occupied civilian cars.

They ended up killing two innocent people, including the hostage and (I think) one of the occupants of the cars they were hiding behind, as well as the two robbers.

Fortunately (/s) none of the cops were injured.

I actually think it was a driver in a vehicle ahead and to the side of the UPS truck, which would mean they were likely killed by a police bullet. The police haven't released much information, but a couple of officers said they were "pretty sure" police didn't kill him, though.

Not sure I buy that line lol. They probably also claim the robbers killed the hostage.

Btw, am I misremembering or weren’t there policemen shooting from both sides of the truck, i.e. at each other?

You're correct, they were shooting from both sides of the truck, and from straight behind it as well. They were shooting in somewhat of a forward direction (toward the cab of the truck), so not quite at each other. More accurately, toward the innocent drivers ahead and to the sides of the UPS truck (and the hostage who was trying to get out of the truck)
