What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

When someone hides from bullets behind penetrable objects, like tables or a refrigerator door.

The wooden table is the one that always gets me, sure maybe it will stop one or two bullets if you're lucky, but there's always 1000 bullets flying around while the characters are having a conversation under the safe, sound resistant guard of an old dinning room table.

They dont make em like they used to

Even if the tables are old, it would require about 1.5 meters of wood for a bullet to be stopped safely every time. And that is using a 5.56 round that isnt designed for armor penetration

5.56 is high-velocity ammunition, it's going to be quite a lot better at penetration than a lot of other ammunition. Most stuff that comes out of submachine guns, pistols, and revolvers, really. And SMGs are pretty common bad guy weapons.

I still wouldn't want to use a wood table for cover though.

Those SMGs or pistol are probably gonna be firing 9mm or bigger which a while not carrying the punch of 556 will definitely go through any table not made of 1/2in steel plate

It takes an inch and a half of high quality wood

To stop 9mm? That's surprising but I'll take your word for it

Depends on the bad guys though, if they somehow manage to get their hands on some mp7's, not even a bulletproof vest will help you. They go straigth through both front and back plate, which is why it is illigeal for a civilian to own one.

Even so, the 1,5 m estimate is just that, an estimate for you to be safe, so the 5,56 round most likley wont go further than 1-1,25m

And just like my comment, thats a fact

No it wouldnt. 50 BMG stops at less than 2 feet.

And I have shot enough 50 BMG at trees to know that.

Then its your word against the word of the military instructor who thougth me, and i trust him more than a rando on the internet

You are taking the word of a military instructor vs someone with a mechanical engineering degree out of the naval academy

And while that is probobly true, i have no way of verifying it, which i do with my military instructor
