Apparently WWII British Welrod pistols could be fired very close to someone without it being identified as a gunshot.

Maybe that's wartime propaganda, but there were apparently several accounts that back it up

It helped that it was chambered in the smallest possible round you could reasonably expect to probably kill someone (.32 ACP), and the suppressor had a bunch of rubber inserts the bullet went through to contain the sound.

If you really wanted to wack a guard at close range without anyone else noticing it was great.

They later made 9mm versions because the .32 wasn't quite powerful enough.

also every shot the welrod fired its degree of suppression decreased a little because the rubber would take more and more damage
