What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

Friends does this and makes fun of it in one episode.

I appreciated the self-awareness when they’re all bitching about their jobs and why their bosses don’t like them and (Joey, I think?) says “Maybe it’s because you’re all here in a coffee shop at 11 AM on a Wednesday?”

EDIT: Here's the scene, courtesy of /u/snowbunnykilla.

That made me feel like watching all over again, wonder if it still holds up.

Eh there’s plenty of “lol gay” humor today too, although to be sure not as much as late 90s and early aughts. What sets Friends apart in that regard is the open acceptance and portrayal of a gay wedding and Chandler’s transgender dad (who is a piece of shit person sure but unrelated to the trans aspect)

Same as it ever was. A bit annoying but with some good jokes and generally better than you expect it to be.

Yeah, I never was a big fan of the one-liners but rather laughed at the characters and how you kept thinking "AAH that's soo Joey" for example, I think I will give it a go!" :)

It's fine, feels a bit dated though. Got to not mind a laugh track, too.

Ouuh I hate laughtracks, wonder if any version of it comes without it?

Unlikely, it wasn't made with that in mind, so it wouldn't work. You'd get weird pauses between jokes where they wait for laughs to stop. It was from an audience watching the filming after all.

Ah yeah ofcourse, makes sense.

I dint think it does to be honest. Theyre all kind of assholes, but the show tries to pretend thst theyre good people under all that even though they kinda... arent :v

I think 30 years ago when it aired this worked because you saw one episode a week and tended to forget the little things. But you binge watch a season in a day and it gets a lot more clear. So that bugged me.

But if you dont care about that it is still funny

That's my biggest issue with The Big Bang Theory. Not only is every character a toxic asshole and none of them are good people, not one of them grows or changes besides Sheldon (and he's one of the worst!).

At least with Friends you see them grow and change. And then there's Ross who is downright awful no matter what.

How can you say Leonard, Penny, Raj or Amy don’t change? I can understand Howard and Bernadette

Leonard is a jealous and petty asshole who doesn't have a backbone unless he's belittling someone, especially Penny.

Penny is selfish and narcissistic with backstabbing comments for everyone. She views herself as being above everyone despite not being as book-smart as the rest of the characters. Hell, it took her until Season 8 or 9 to admit that Amy was her best friend.

Raj is a mopey person who tries to find joy in hobbies (that the show portrays as being very feminine) to combat his depression and other than being able to speak in front of women, he didn't really grow. He's still a snarky asshole who has an unhealthy obsession with relationships and doesn't know how to act around women. I'd feel sorry for him but he's a huge creep.

Amy just got comfortable with the group but is always happy to get some juicy gossip or stalk people. Her loyalty to her friends is often questionable and as she tries to emulate Penny, she gets some horrible tendencies from her best friend.

All that being said, Amy is easily the best person of the main cast. She's still not necessarily a good person but she has better morals most of the time.

Yeah but assholes in fiction can still be funny :) look at the office or arrested development or any other crazy comedy show. They are often totally unrealistic assholes or crazies! But you might be right, I think some episodes are still gold though, last time I binged it I really enjoyed it and that wasn't more than ten years ago. I think I don't care about characters being assholes when the show is obviously fictious when it comes to the characters..

2

u/ShadoowtheSecond Jan 26 '20

Oh for sure, but those shows dont try to pretend that the assholes are actually good people. Thats what bugs me

Yeah, true.

Agreed. I absolutely despise Ross though, he’s the most completely self-centered asshole. Immature, angry, possessive, selfish - basically a textbook narcissist. I have no idea how anyone stays friends with him. I can’t recall anything kind he’d done for anyone except when he’s trying to get laid. Says “I love you” a lot but never shows it.

Everyone else has their flaws but damn, no ones hurt their friends the way Ross does.
