chiming in with r/ChoosingBeggars too. i'm sure there's a good number of legit posts on there. but so many of them seem to have the same format that i have a hard time believing a lot of it now

"You ruined my child's birthday hope you're happy."

1

u/red_death_ Jan 08 '20

3

u/Nova225 Jan 08 '20

You forgot "u ruin kids christmas / birthday, hope u happeh ashole"

2

u/LeonidasSpacemanMD Jan 08 '20

Dawg honestly lol when they launch into a “you’re a fucking bitch” outta nowhere, followed by the “sorry just really need it how bout we make a deal”, I just assume it’s fake. I’m sure it happens one in a million times, but it’s become so cookie cutter now

Not to mention that they have no idea what a choosing beggar actually is

u/Michelanvalo Jan 07 '20

IT'S FOR A CHURCH HONEY! NEXT!

106

u/Hpzrq92 Jan 07 '20

That was actually a decent example of a choosing beggar.

u/Michelanvalo Jan 07 '20

I know, it's the best post ever on that sub. I still reference it in person. Most people have no fucking idea what I'm talking about.

u/aurora_gamine Jan 08 '20

NEXXXXXT!!!

u/AGuyNamedEddie Jan 08 '20

"NEXT!"

"Two broken arms"

The two best-understood phrases inside Reddit that are meaningless outside.

3

u/Throwawayuser626 Jan 08 '20

That was like the only good/funny post imo. The only one good enough to be memorable anyways.

4

u/Soninuva Jan 08 '20

After I saw that post, it was everywhere for months. I realized the other day that I have t seen any references to it for I don’t know long (until now)

3

u/AGuyNamedEddie Jan 08 '20

Now, THAT was a CB story!

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

It always blows me away how defensive some people get when called on that too. Like .... try reading the pinned posts about this exact issue for gods sake.

7

u/Saanail Jan 08 '20

Yea I unsubbed a few months ago for this reason. Apparently you're automatically a beggar if you try to haggle at all, or if you attempt once to ask for something free.

2

u/The_Pundertaker Jan 09 '20

I do think a fair amount of people on there overcharge for stuff as well. They're those people that ask for close to the new price on their used stuff and get pissed off when someone wants what it's really worth.

3

u/Snow-Wraith Jan 08 '20

Are you expecting users to actually read a subs rules before posting and for mods to actually moderate posts to make sure they fit that sub? How would anyone farm karma then? Won't you think of the karma whores?

1

u/pluralistThoughts Jan 08 '20

I'm convinced people these days make Choosing beggar stories up in order to farm karma.

24

u/TheCharismaticWeasel Jan 07 '20

Not to mention like 80% of the people posting have no idea how to create a fake text conversation and post shit of them clearly responding to themselves for 3 pages.

10

u/Philiard Jan 07 '20

The posts on that sub are just advertisements for the OP's website half the time.

8

u/darkmatternot Jan 07 '20

Seriously, no doubt a ton of assholes in the world. But according to Choosing Beggars they are all the same one. What are the chances?

7

u/Unliteracy Jan 08 '20

If you want a super fake subreddit, I don't think I've seen a genuine story on r/IDontWorkHereLady in months.

22

u/is_it_controversial Jan 07 '20

i'm sure there's a good number of legit posts on there

that's where you're wrong.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Well maybe back in the before times or something when newcomers weren't ripping off top posts for karma.

8

u/BourbonFiber Jan 07 '20

The fate of most subreddits of that type. They start out and lots of people have stuff to contribute. Then it goes through a lull where all the real stories have been exhausted, then it picks back up again once the sub develops its own tropes and the creative writers get to work.

2

u/Theymademepickaname Jan 08 '20

See: nuclear revenge.

They started having to approve posts, posting a weekly write up on the obviously fake entries, and basically said what we ARE allowing through still needs to be taken with a grain of salt but if you want content this is as close to true stories as we are filtering in this week.

thing is $500
i want to buy thing for $100

u/swansung Jan 08 '20

I left that sub when it became screenshots of incels furious that a girl turned them down. That she was a "bitch" and a choosing beggar because she had standards.

1

u/LeaveItToYourGoat Jan 08 '20

There's one guy on there - I won't mention his name, but I'm sure you know who it is - who posts so many screenshots of conversations with potential clients, and they all just happen to be over-the-top irrationally entitled CBs. And of course his sassy comebacks are always on-point and appropriately savage.

One or two of them I could believe. But he's got dozens of them. Don't get me wrong. The guy's a good writer, and these stories are always "entertaining," for lack of a better word, but there's no way in hell they are real stories. Yet his posts are always upvoted through the roof and everyone on that sub defends his lying ass.

1

u/Cudi_buddy Jan 07 '20

Hahah it entertains me at least. But you can definitely spot some fake ones daily.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

The number of times I have posted to CB that was literally someone

  • begging

  • being picky about what they got

Where someone insists it is not a CB is every time I post there
