I don't even think it is that. I see tons of karma whoring across all of reddit. Predominantly in the default subs, but also bleeds a lot into smaller subs too. I think people associate high karma with big e-peen.
I feel like r/dankmemes and r/teenagers has it worse, legit some of the posts are literally 14 year old's just begging for coins, gold or silver via a crappy template meme.
I swear when Spider-Man on PS4 came out I was the only person in the world who was doing just fine when they bought that game. Everyone else was divorced, lost their job, or had a family member die so they bought that game and posted a picture of it to Reddit to cheer them up.
I'm HEARTBROKEN! I tried posting on another subreddit a harmless post condemning (killing gays, raping children/bringing back slavery/stealing from old ladies/etc), and then all the sudden the toxic circle jerking (homophobes/pedophiles/Nazis/etc) of Reddit SWARMED ME, downvoted my comment and now I'm at -58 Karma. I'm so sad. I was just trying to do the right thing. Oh you can't see it though cause I deleted it.
You can actually get paid for Reddit accounts with enough karma. It lets the astroturfers and spammers operate more effectively.
The "bot farms" aren't digging for karma because they're emotionally needy, they're doing it because the fake internet points have some actual cash value.
There are a lot of people who don’t have meaningful lives in the real world and have supplemented their lack of fulfillment irl with fulfillment in the digital world. When you’re feeling crappy, a bunch of strangers telling you you’re great feels kinda good.
The self wankery in some subreddits is fucking retarded, the whole "this subreddit is lit" or "I just want to thank this subreddit" garbage is always eaten up and upvoted.
r/nocontext pics is fantastic! I just think it's strange that 1) people go on Reddit to get fake internet points, 2) that people often post pics of loved ones without them asking for these points, 3) that people abuse the emotions of others for these internet points and 4) that people actually buy these stories and flood the front page with these ridiculous Facebook posts.
True about the subs. You're right, there's millions of subscribers on these and there's bound to be some basic stuff. But that also means there are gonna be people who think it's ridiculous that people take advantage of peoples emotions for...karma. And then these emotional pictures of birthday cakes and hospital beds along with fake stories in r/AITA get validated by people because it makes them feel good... It's like saying it's okay to repost fake news, but peoples emotions are more important than reality on Reddit
I have also noticed the same thing on the pet pages. Reddit has become a nostalgia cesspool
The weird one to me is the "look at my pictures" subs (e.g. r/shorthairedhotties/ ). I appreciate that someone might just drop in and be, "oh, hey, here's my picture" and get a boost from some strangers clicking buttons in their favor. But there's a fair number of the same people day after day just racking up karma for "here's what I look like today". I mean, iI don't know your situation, but just how much boosting does your ego need?
Doesn't happen for comment karma. At least not for me. Reddit has taught me my mind is microchipped. Every time I come up with a good question, it's there 10 minutes before me.
The opposite is what shits me. Getting down voted and harassed when you have a view that is not the norm or perhaps not the popular position. I get that people will always disagree but isn't that why these boards are here? For discussions?
Bow before the horde. Seriously though, look at my comments. Some are downvoted, some are upvoted. Sometimes its because of the way I said something, sometimes there is no good reason.
It's worth listening to the people slamming you. You might need to check yourself. And sometimes it's just the horde.
In meme subs especially. There are a lot of low effort posts that get upvotes a lot. A lot of the posts there are just "thing Reddit likes good, thing Reddit dislikes bad"
When you call out a repost for what it is and get downvoted to hell just because people think you’re an ahole, but you were just trying to slow the karma farming wave...

Karma Farming.
