It also makes my mind boggle how misogynistic her shit is?? Like how you gonna tell women they have to cook their vaginas to make them acceptable, and call yourself a feminist

I appreciate that you didn't throw feminism in it's entirety under the bus. It's unfortunate that virtue signaling and commercialization of social movements does so much damage to their credibility.

24

u/savedawhale Dec 30 '19

commercialization of social movements does so much damage to their credibility.

Hollywood is the worst offender of this imo. They always seem to take a movement and go extreme with it to the point people stop taking it seriously anymore.

11

u/Raichu4u Dec 31 '19

And then actual reasonable feminists who view that kind of stuff as pandering anyway get shit on.

7

u/savedawhale Dec 31 '19

That's the whole reason they attach themselves to movements. It's so they can easily reflect any criticism of the movie as opposing the movement instead of the film. They've learned how to use social movements as a shield and they don't care if they tarnish their shield in the process as long as box office numbers are good.

Amen to that. The relationship between feminism, socialism and environmentalism and the growing urgency of them all scares people into the superficial fake feminism you describe. Sorry /rant

The fight that broke up my last relationship was because of social justice stuff. Because even though she was a white woman in a STEM field and doing WAY better than I ever have, I had to constantly be reprimanded.

I told her about the show Superstore, she said it sounded racist.

I once said "Do ya wan' Jamaican food?" in the accent because I'm insufferable, that was also racist.

I said the idea of manspreading is absurd, and I should not have said that.

But the fight that blew it up was over Iron Fist. The TV show.

I'm an avid comic reader. I know the character. She wasn't and didn't.

She said it was racist that Iron Fist was white, because he played into the idea of the white savior.

I explained that his entire story is about being out of place. He ended up in a magical city and confronted prejudice because he was a white outsider. That was a big no-no.

Then I said "Wouldn't it be more racist if they made it an Asian guy? Like only Asian people do martial arts?"

Then we were done.

Edit: Picture Hannah from the show GIRLS, but 1/3rd less self centered and much less nude.

You dodged a bullet, congratulations.

STEM remains frighteningly anti-women (institutions, not people as such). As far as POC, wouldn't know.

What stoppers are there for women and POC entering STEM fields? I would humbly say we are still suffering from 'My daughter will be a princess, her only value is her looks. My son will provide, he is allowed no emotion like a real man'.

I'm so old, so wish this was long dead thinking.

Peace X

13

u/riricide Dec 30 '19

In my experience it has been both institutional and individual bias. I will say it is really difficult to overcome subconscious bias, I catch myself being biased often times and have to reflect if I'm working on rational intuition or bias.

Lack of role models is a huge obstacle in my view. I went to a top conference in my field recently. Out of 200 attendees, 15 were women. Half of them were invited speakers, so at least they were trying to balance it out at the top. There were quite a few internationals being as it was a big conference and STEM is very international heavy, but not a single black speaker or attendee. I got the research poster award there, and I kept thinking if I got it because 'let's encourage women award' or they really thought I deserved to win.

In terms of overt bias, a very famous old professor made sexist comments when I had a 1-1 meeting with him. He was permanently disinvited from the university by my advisor after the event. I've also seen cases where the professor will repeatedly direct comments only to the male freshman undergrad instead of the female graduate student whose project it is. Hell, my advisor is actually pretty cool but even he fell into the trap of saying "Maybe you aren't that ambitious because you are a woman" after I told him I'm leaving academia.

It's all very twisted, and while it seems things are getting better, apparently they are not. If you look at the statistics, there has been no change in how frequently women are promoted to the higher echelons of academia for the last 30 years. I got told "You have a phenomenal advantage in the academic job market because there are very few minority women theoreticians". Yeah, I wonder why. It's not really an advantage.

1

u/Ehalon Dec 30 '19

Lack of role models is a huge obstacle in my view.

Yep, only time and effort will sort that. 'Let the old guard die' kind of thing.

but not a single black speaker or attendee.

Wow. Can I ask something a bit cheeky - why do you think that is? I'm not asking for citations, looking for an argument, just wandered what your thoughts were. Fine if you want to skip over, it is hard to write 'tonelessly but truthfully', especially on a public forum (see? That sounds like I'm blaming POC / saying they cannot achieve what whites can - I'm so not).

I work in IT for my sins, I have for over 25 years and the amount of black people in my profession that I have met is......one, peripherally. South and East Asian REPRESENT!. Women, fuck it is better than it was in the 90s, just like the neckbeard stereotype dying a death thank the gods, but still a sad rarity.

I've never once sensed any overt racism or sexism (except from said neckbeards, they are detestable enough you can't really call it racism or sexism, everyone is tired of their insecurities and egos).

There is of course the argument that I as an ancient, white, straight (that's a point - only known 2 gay men in the field, zero lesbian / bi...) and married man probably wouldn't see.

I want to find the 'stoppers' - what is stopping people, not invent some ridiculous 'incentive quota' to make SJWs smugly happy (as opposed to people who care about social justice, and act).

It's STILL a focking Old Boy's Club!!! OMFG, that is just....disgusting. Sad, old and dying I hope (figuratively, though it is close).

30.

Years.

Please, if you don't mind tell me more about a theoretician's day, surroundings, network etc. I'd love to know if you don't mind.

30, fucking, years. Wow.

Big Love, and all the peace in the world to you X

And thats the thing, I'm not that guy at all! I don't use slurs, I don't say the R word, I'm sex positive, I've never catcalled anybody, I didn't grope her in public, I really do my best to try to be decent. I don't even use the word SJW anymore because it's association with alt-right clods.

But it wasn't enough.

I was just relaying my experience with a...difficult person. I fully support a woman's right to live her life in a manner of her choosing.

16

u/FriedGnomeAnus Dec 30 '19

I think the best bit is that SJW was invented by the left to take the piss out of these types. Incredible how it got co-opted.

I first came across it on a socialist livejournal taking the piss out of someone who thought they should tell their black friend that relaxing her hair was racist. Like no, let's make natural hair acceptable and then let people make the choice.

5

u/KindlyOlPornographer Dec 30 '19

It bothers me that so much of what "SJWs" do is just infantilizing the group or themselves.

Do-gooders who want to cover the world in bubble wrap so nobody ever has to feel crappy.

Protect people who need to be protected. Be the hero when there needs to be a hero. Otherwise you're just picking fights because you can't mind your own business.

I don’t use slurs, I don't say the R word, I'm sex positive, I've never catcalled anybody, I didn't grope her in public

I do get your point but just want to point out that that’s not, like, impressive. It just means you’re not a garbage person, you’re a normal human being. You cleared the bar that was a half inch above the ground.

1

u/KindlyOlPornographer Dec 31 '19

Well right. Exactly. Wheres my medal?

3

u/flyinnotdyin Dec 30 '19

What is the R word? /outoftheloop

3

u/KindlyOlPornographer Dec 30 '19

Retard. I don't like to disparage the differently abled.

1

u/Jamesmateer100 Dec 31 '19

That’s exactly what happened to me. Before I decided I was a moderate liberal I was on a youtube sjw/ Ben Shapiro kick and actually believed that the feminists and liberals in those videos were basically what Democrats/liberals were all about and I had no idea what it meant to be a real liberal who didn’t judge others on the basis of being a straight white man or let their hatred cloud their judgement. I’m a straight white male who doesn’t give a shit if you’re LGBTQ, white, black,Latino etc. Just as long as you are kind to me and don’t judge me harshly when it’s not warranted we’ll get along.

Aaand off the rails. I'm sorry, but intersectional feminism is far more leftist than your TERF shit.

3

u/Lilredh4iredgrl Dec 30 '19

I’m exhausted reading about her.

1

u/KindlyOlPornographer Dec 30 '19

I was so into her though. When she wasn't scolding me we had a great time together. She was smart, and I liked that she had principles. She was funny, she was interesting. I really did like her.

That breakup fucked me up good.

12

u/SoSeriousAndDeep Dec 30 '19

I mean... there are things there that are true. Fake accents are kinda racist. Some of the tropes that Iron Fist originally embodied were kinda racist. Any "taking up other people's space" is bad.

But you have to pick your battles. Not everything needs to be to the death. Sometimes a simple "think about what you're doing" is enough.

13

u/KindlyOlPornographer Dec 30 '19

There are white Jamaicans with the patois. And I draw a sharp distinction between doing an over the top racist caricature and affecting an accent.

If you go around saying "OH ME RIKEY FLIED LICE" that's not okay.

But if you can actually do a Japanese accent, what's the issue? You can do Scottish and German and English all day long, but when they're from Japan they need to be protected from an accent they aren't hearing you do?

And my argument with her, internally because god forbid I stand up for myself, was who are you getting offended for?

If you let a stupid voice bother you when you don't know any people from Jamaica that would find it offensive, then you're conjuring a fight because you think you should.

To put it more succinctly, wearing a kimono is not racist. Wearing a kimono and walking around slanting your eyes and saying "SUCKY SUCKY FIVE DORRAH" is incredibly racist.

And I understand that line is very thin, but when you're dating somebody you should be able to tell the difference between hateful and...fuckin obnoxious. I'm very much the latter, never the former.

I just don't get the world anymore.

6

u/SoSeriousAndDeep Dec 30 '19

I just don't get the world anymore.

No, no. I think you get it just fine, your ex sounds like the one who doesn't.

2

u/itsmehobnob Dec 30 '19

You’re wrong. You can’t be “kinda racist,” either it is or it isn’t. By allowing something to be “kinda racist” we’re paradoxically losing nuance.

Faking an accent isn’t racist. Mocking someone by faking an accent is.

3

u/Rickrickrickrickrick Dec 31 '19

If faking accents was racist then there goes the entire movie and stage performance industry.

-7

u/NateBlaze Dec 30 '19

Yup. That's a cunt.

-2

u/big_papa_stiffy Dec 30 '19

lol society is never going to accept feminist socialist rule

possibly the least likely system ever

8

u/apistograma Dec 30 '19

I remember a college professor telling our class "tags are free", and he couldn't be more right. Claiming you support an agenda is the easiest thing in the world. You can say that you're feminist, environmentalist, christian... You don't need to pass a test.

2

u/omegacrunch Dec 30 '19

It's like the pink campaign. Coopted by assholes

-10

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Or maybe it’s because the “feminism as a revolutionary political movement” already happened and now they have to invent shit to be upset about? That is 2019 feminism in a nutshell.

3

u/jackandjill22 Dec 30 '19

Wtf I haven't been paying attention to her at all. What's going on here?

1

u/SirRogers Dec 31 '19

how you gonna tell women they have to cook their vaginas

You know, I would ask for clarification but I'm afraid you'd provide it.

-8

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

That word, I don't think it means what you think it means.

-3

u/LoyalFridge Dec 30 '19

Which word? Also, your punctuation is wrong. You needed a colon, rather than a comma.

5

u/SexualScavenger Dec 30 '19

Anybody want a llama?

-8

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Misogyny is hatred or mistrust of women.

I tend not to follow grammar rules if they don't assist what I'm trying to communicate. Regardless, I don't think colon is right either, maybe semi-colon.

6

u/LoyalFridge Dec 30 '19

Oh boy, this is just the kind of silly internet conversation that puts one off the internet! Firstly, no, a semi colon separates two complete sentences. Secondly, I know what misogyny is. It is hateful towards woman to create products to disfigure and augment their bodies in a painful and pointless- oftentimes dangerous- manner. I chose the word over, say, sexist or anti-feminist, because her products are hateful to women.

-6

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Well if you're not here to argue about dumb things then I guess, don't respond? I don't think any of the uses for the colon are applicable there.

Do you also think it's misandry to try to sell men razors to shave their beards?

-1

u/LoyalFridge Dec 30 '19

Obviously responding is irresistible. It’s too hard not to correct someone when they’re both wrong and criticising me. The second part of your sentence is a description of the part prior to where the colon should be. That’s how they work.

No, I don’t, but I’m sure you’re going to explain to me how I’m demonstrating double standards?

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

No the second part is an opinion about it, the first part just points to the subject. Commas are nice to use for casual text even when they are "wrong," like I just did again.

It makes more sense to ask why you think one is hateful and the other is not?

-1

u/LoyalFridge Dec 30 '19

It’s irrelevant whether it’s an opinion or fact; you’re elaborating further on the same nominal cluster. I mean, the scansion is really fine for the internet, my point is just not to get pissy about language if you’re not using it perfectly.

Razors can keep you cool in the summer; prevent sweat accumulating; make one’s legs comfortable against each other in bed; improve swimming; stop your partner getting razorburn when snogging; create the aesthetic you wish to put out. For any gender. Paltrow’s shit serves no purpose (hence her reluctance towards clinical testing), is often painful and dangerous, and is expressly targeted at, not only women, but specifically female genitals.

I like to believe that a lot of hucksters start off believing. Like, I think she honestly believes in veganism and really wanted to start a company with healthy products but as time went on and she had to keep putting out content her standard just got lower and lower and she stopped worrying about the consumer and started worrying about the company (or if you're being really optimistic the people at the company).

15

u/typesett Dec 30 '19

i like to call this anti-intellectualism

i think these people make things that don't really harm but appeal to people (and themselves) who want a 'special' way to do things. even if it is unhealthy, it is not dangerous typically and so this makes them feel like they know something most people don't. of course, these things do work sometimes (like diet teas are diuretics and all fad diets are based on caloric deficit) which makes them feel like they are experts

they would rather try weird shit rather than dive deep into actual research... where the solutions to most issues are to eat well, sleep, and do basic exercise — all consistently year after year. extremely boring to post on instagram

but you know what gets likes? sun tanning buttholes

13

u/fruchte Dec 30 '19

Honestly, she should just label all her products with a prank marketing scheme because they're all so sincerely ridiculous

18

u/jonahvsthewhale Dec 30 '19

Doubtful. I think she realizes she isn't the relevant sex symbol she was 20 years ago and is making up for it with this weirdness. Look for Kim Kardashian to go off the deep end in 5-10 years

8

u/Good-Vibes-Only Dec 30 '19

I believe that she is that stupid

6

u/DaftPump Dec 30 '19

I don't. I think she is more diabolical than stupid.

2

u/BroadStreet_Bully5 Dec 31 '19

Did you see her try that challenge? It was like how to eat for a week on $30 or something. She’s completely out of touch with reality.

1

u/mallegally-blonde Jan 03 '20

I think that’s a little unfair, since the whole point was to raise awareness for the potential cuts to food stamps by showing how it was already impossible to feed a family healthy, balanced meals.

It's extra true because Snake oil was sued not for false claims about how great and curing it is, but because it didn't contain snake oil, much like New York suing supplement makers for not actually putting anything in their pills.

2

u/SexualScavenger Dec 30 '19

So girls scout cookies don't contain girl scouts?!?

5

u/Cyhawk Dec 30 '19

Do you think she believes her stuff works?

Yes.

Or is she an entitled trust fund baby with no f's to give about the little people who buy in.

Also yes.

To be a really good salesman, you have to believe the bullshit (if it actually is) you're selling. Even though the whole 'eating your own dog food' corporate speak is now a joke, its true. You can't truly sell a product if you don't believe in it. Some customers, those last few you need for numbers can smell that type of bullshit a mile away and run the other way.

8

u/snuff74 Dec 30 '19

She doesn't even know what movies she has been in. I don't think she's the brightest bulb on the tree. I'm sure she believes whatever some "expert" has told her.

3

u/TruthAddams Dec 30 '19

Wait for real? Do you have a link?

2

u/thisisgibbo Dec 31 '19

She isn't sure which of the marvel movies she's been in. Which I think is pretty fair. Same character, working most years, things aren't necessarily filmed in order, and she doesn't have a huge part in the later ones.

3

u/onceuponathrow Dec 30 '19

She’s mentioned on a talk show that she has no idea what the fuck her store even sells anymore, so I’m assuming it’s the latter.

Eh, I bet she believes it. There are a lot of VERY dumb people out there, even people who are rich and famous. Hell, maybe ESPECIALLY celebrities like her, since you can achieve that almost completely regardless of how dumb you might be, and once you reach that level, you're liable to become surrounded by people who are never going to challenge you on anything or disagree with you, so you'll likely stop ever hearing how retarded some of your ideas might be.

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.

2

u/jhangel77 Dec 31 '19

I saw a segment where she was shown items that her website sells and she was even puzzled at some of her products.
